AVICII - Silhouettes (performed live by Kebu @ Assembly 2013)

Published on Aug 17, 2013 Kebu·23 videos

"Kebu's all-analog synth cover of AVICII's "Silhouettes", performed live at the Assembly Computer Festival in summer 2013. Real-time computer graphics by VJ Julius Tuomisto and his amazing Z Vector software.

First time I heard AVICII's "Silhouettes" (not that many months ago) I thought it was quite a good tune and really liked it. But when I added a JX8P to my live rig I realized the tune would work great live as an all-analog synth tune.

The song was performed using only analog synthesizers, either played live or sequenced. The performance was recorded directly from the mixer to a stereo track and later mixed together with the ambience from the arena. A few mistakes have been cut out and replaced with the audio from a rehearsal take.

Equipment used in this song: Roland TR-808, JX8P, Juno 60, Alpha Juno 1&2; Korg Polysix, Poly 61, Mono/Poly, Micro-preset M500; Jomox AirBase99, Touched-by-sound DRM1, Oberheim Matrix 6R, Yamaha RM1x (only for MIDI sequencing), Behringer DDX3216, Lexicon MPX500, as well as a midi patchbay and additional preamps for my mixer.

I just discovered "The Veldt" by Deadmau5 and really enjoyed it. I noticed that I could recreate the riff with my Mono/poly, with the TR-808 trigging the gate of it, and off I went!

Equipment used: Roland TR-808 (drums and trigger for the Mono-poly), Juno 60, Alpha Juno; Korg Mono/Poly, Polysix; Electro Harmonix Small Stone; Boss DD-3; Lexicon MPX500, MPX110; Allen & Heath GS1; Tascam 38, DX-4D; Alesis iO26 & Izotope Ozone 5 for mastering

Only analog synths used, recorded to tape, and mixed with an analog mixer. No computers or MIDI used during recording and mixing. Only the final stereo track was mastered using Izotope Ozone 5 (AAAD)."

"This is the second tune I made for my debut album, "To Jupiter and Back", released in May by Secret Entertainment: http://www.inverse.fi/store/?p=en.levyt.item.html&pid=17004

This video was recorded live at Kulttuuritehdas Korjaamo, Helsinki, 30th of November 2012. Many thanks to Lauri Kujanpää and Pertti Grönholm for working the cameras.

The song was performed using only analog synthesizers, either played live or sequenced. Equipment used in this song: Korg Micro-preset M500, Poly-61, Polysix; Logan String Melody; Touched by Sound DRM1, Roland TR-808, Juno 60, Alpha Juno 1 & 2; Moog Source; Electro Harmonix Small Stone; Yamaha RS7000 (only for MIDI sequencing); Behringer DDX3216, ADA8000; Lexicon MPX500; Steinberg Midex 8 (as midi patchbay).

Unfortunately, the audio recording from the concert failed - it was recorded only as boring mono. But fortunately, I recorded my general rehearsal a few days before the gig, so the main audio you hear is from that.

Jan Hammer - Crockett's Theme Performed Live by Kebu

Jan Hammer - Crockett's Theme (performed live by Kebu @ Dynamo, Turku, 5.5.2012)

"I always liked this tune and was inspired when I heard Michael Cassette's version. So for my live set I made an arrangement that was influenced by both versions, but put my own twist on it. The tune ended my show in Dynamo, Turku, where this video was recorded. Unfortunately, I only had three camcorders going and the heavy bass drum in the club made the cameras vibrate with each beat. But the feeling was so high in the club that I definitely wanted to upload this particular take!

The song was performed using only analog synthesizers, either played live or sequenced. The performance was recorded line in to one of the cameras. The ambience in the club was recorded using the built-in microphones on two of the remaining cameras and mixed together with the line signal.

Equipment used in this song: Korg Polysix, Poly 61, Mono/Poly, Micro-preset M500; Roland TR-808, Jomox AirBase99, Juno 60, Alpha Juno 1&2; Touched-by-sound DRM1, Oberheim Matrix 6R, Yamaha RM1x (only for MIDI sequencing), Behringer DDX3216, Lexicon MPX500, as well as a midi patchbay and additional preamps for my mixer. Cameras: Canon HF100 (x2) and HF200.

A big thank you to the amazing audience in Turku and to Turku Synth Club for arranging the gig!"

Kebu - Michael's Anthem

"This tune was recorded using only a 4 track cassette recorder and a drum machine triggering arpeggios on the synths. No sequencers or computers used (except for mastering). First, the track was programmed into the drum machine. The three trigger outputs were used for clocking (giving rhythms) to the arpeggiators. Then, the backing track was played back and the arpeggiators played (chords or notes). This was submixed into two tracks (stereo) on the cassette deck. The melody lines and solos were overdubbed using the two remaining tracks. The last additions (noise bursts, doubling of the C-part) were added during mixdown of the song.

The song is also available on my debut album, which is out now.

Synths used: Roland TR-808; Korg Mono/Poly, M500, Polysix, Poly-61, PE-2000.
Other equipment: SansAmp GT2, Lexicon MPX500, Vesta spring reverbs, Allen & Heath GS1, Alesis IO26,

I didn't plan to make any more videos before my upcoming album is ready, but I stumbled upon a competition to remix Above & Beyond's "You got to go". Since I've recently discovered Anjunabeats and their great trance compilation Worldwide 03, which I've been spinning almost every day now for two weeks, I just had to take the time to give it a shot!

I saved only the vocals (sung by Zoë Johnston) from the original track and remade all music using only analog synths. The analog synths and analog drum machines were controlled in realtime by a MIDI sequencer and mixed together with the vocal using an analog mixer and hardware effects.

Equipment used: Korg Mono/Poly, Polysix, Poly-61; Roland Juno-60, Alpha Juno, TR-808 (w. MIDI); Moog Source; Oberheim Matrix 6R; Vermona DRM1 Mk III; Electro Harmonix Small Stone; Boss BD-2 (H2O mod), DD-3; Lexicon MPX500; DBX 290; Emagic AMT8; M-Audio Midisport 8x8/s; Alesis iO26; Cubase SL 1.06; Allen & Heath GS1; Yamaha S30 (as MIDI keyboard); Doepfer MCV1; Kenton Pro 2.

Kebu - Requiem for a Dream (Roland D50 demo)

YouTube Uploaded by kebunator on Apr 10, 2011

"I took some time to learn a bit more about programming my Roland D50, so I made a tune using only the D50 and its built in effects.

The song was programmed/performed and recorded using Cubase SL. Most of the patches used are my own programs or variations on presets. Each instrument was recorded individually by multitracking. No plugins were used except for mild EQ on some tracks and a single-band limiter on the master track. The reverbs, delays and choruses heard are all D50's own effects. The video was later compiled showing how the various parts were played."

Kebu - The Lunar Effect (Yamaha S30 demo)

YouTube Uploaded by kebunator on Mar 19, 2011

"This time I wanted to explore the limits of my Yamaha S30, so I decided to do a whole tune only by MIDI sequencing.

The song was programmed/performed using Cubase SL solely as a MIDI sequencer controlling the S30 (in "Performance" mode). The song was then recorded straight to 2-track tape in one go. No overdubs, multitracking or external effects were used. Only mild EQ and limiting was used for the digital master. The video was later compiled showing how the various parts were played or programmed."

Kebu - To Jupiter and back (TR-606 + Juno 60 + Axxe + Logan demo)

YouTube via kebunator | October 14, 2010

"I wanted to learn how to use my Roland TR-606, so I thought the best way would be to compose a song with it. And here's the result!

The song was recorded live. No overdubs, performed in one go straight through!

The TR-606 sends external gate trigger-signals each time a high tom or low tom hit is activated. I muted the tom sounds and used the pattern sequencer for the low tom for controlling the arpeggiator clock of a Roland Juno 60 instead. The pattern for the high tom controls the gate to an Arp Axxe.

The Logan String Melody II is run through a EHX Small Stone phaser. Both the Juno and the Logan is sent to a simple delay. I would have wanted to have the song 100% analog, but my space echo broke down, so I had to use a digital delay (TC M300). All instruments are also fed more or less to a stereo spring reverb (Vesta Kaza RV-3). The output from the mixer is recorded with a stereo cassette deck. Mild EQ and limiting was used in the final digital mastering stage.

The song title? To me the song was an adventurous voyage, hence the title. :)"

Editors - Papillon (performed by Kebu on a Roland Alpha Juno-synth)

YouTube via kebunator | July 15, 2010

"This video is a tribute to the best pop song of the decade, and also to a magnificent but underestimated synth from the 80's.

I woke up one morning with a weird idea of making a cover of the tune called "Papillon" by Editors, using only my Roland Alpha Juno! The equipment visible in the video was the only equipment used for producing the song: a programmer ("editor") for the juno (PG-300), a stereo recording interface (Mindprint Trio), an overdrive stomp box (Boss BD-2), and a computer. The synth was recorded using a multitrack software (Cubase SL). Only the following plugins were used: one stereo reverb, one mono delay, channel EQ, as well as a multiband compressor and limiter on the final master."

Kebu - To the unknown woman (Korg M-500 & PE-2000 demo)

YouTube via kebunator | June 27, 2010 | 3:22

"Here is a song I composed to demonstrate a few sounds from the Korg Micro-Preset (M-500) and Polyphonic Ensemble Orchestra (PE-2000) analog synthesizers, both from the 1970's.

After the song was composed, I noticed that it bears some similarities to Vangelis' song "To the unknown man" (most of the chord changes and the key - C sharp). While "To the unknown man" grows into a quite bombastic tune from its humble beginnings, this tune stays rigid, but still airy and modest until the end, kind of complementing each other. Hence the song title.

Each part was recorded separately to a reel-to-reel recorder (Tascam 38) and mixed using an analog mixer. An analog drum machine (Roland TR-808) was used for providing the rhythm track. A tape delay (Roland RE-201) was the only effect used in addition to a phaser (EHX small stone) for the noise. Mild EQ and limiting was used in the final digital mastering stage."
