Black Corporation Xerxes Session with Paul Schilling & Pandomonium

"I was able to spend an hour with the amazing Xerxes, with the Midiboard as controller, so polyphonic aftertouch. It was still a prototype (you may hear some subtle chorus "chirp" artifacts in especially quiet spots). In this session I gravitated towards exploring the beautiful highpass and bandpass filter modes. This is a killer synth.

We recorded this session with Valhalla reverb and a bit of delay."

& XERXES Synthesizer - Fanfare by Pandomonium:

"Xerxes synthesizer (prototype).

Individual tracks played live on Kurzweil Midiboard with dynamics controlled via polyphonic aftertouch only. Sounds programmed and performed by Ando Pilve.

Percussion by Spitfire
Reverb by Valhalla

No other samples or sounds used

Fanfare for the Common Man composed by Aaron Copland"

Fun with CS-80 / GX-1 style string ensemble on Deckard's Dream

Published on Feb 27, 2019 Paul Schilling

"A walkthrough of my recreation of Stevie Wonder's "Village Ghetto Land" GX-1 string ensemble on the Deckard's Dream synth, with plenty of audio examples.

The Deckard goes beyond what the CS-80 can do, for example by offering PWM LFO sync across all voices and layers, which very few synths actually offer, and which adds a vibrant airy ensemble-type feel. Also the Deckard lets you reverse the polarity of the high-pass filter envelopes, which was also a feature of the GX-1 (so that either the HP filter opens/closes together with the LP, or goes the opposite way)."

"Obviously you always want to hear more of this synthesizer right? At Knobcon this year we were able to grab some demo patches from Paul Schilling (Schilling Sound Emporium) who was showing off his work on the Deckard's Dream Synth. In the demo Paul used the Kurzweil MIDI keyboard (for its polyphonic after touch) and the Linnstrument."

Deckard's Dream Sound Design With Paul Schilling

Published on Sep 12, 2018 Synthtopia

"At Knobcon 2018, synthesist Paul Schilling was demonstrating some of the sound design work he's done on the Deckard's Dream synthesizer - an analog synth that's inspired by the Yamaha CS-80 and its use by Vangelis on the Blade Runner soundtrack."

And a video from Paul himself:

Blade Runner Blues lead demo

Published on Aug 13, 2018 Paul Schilling

"demo of the patch I created for Arturia's CS-80V.

The Blade Runner Blues lead / harmonica patch is one of the most expressive patches Vangelis ever did on the CS-80. Among other things it features sensitive and fine-tuned velocity and aftertouch response, with quite different settings for each of the two synth lines. Since it is not directly derived from the CS-80's preset buttons, as many of his other go-to patches were, and especially because it has so many expressive nuances, it is not a straightforward patch to recreate.

After many hours of fine-tuning every possible parameter on the CS-80V3 and much A/B comparison, this is the closest I have gotten. The pad background was created with the Roland VP-03 strings to emulate Vangelis' gorgeous VP330, and some Rhodes flourishes were added."

Original Yamaha CS-80 Presets for Deckard's Dream

Deckard's Dream Demos by Paul Schilling

"Each of the original 22 CS-80 patches went through several revisions over the last few months to get them as close as possible. Included are all the various CS-80 preset combinations - a total of around 120 Deckard's Dream patches, each of them tweaked for optimal balance.

In the style of Vangelis, since he is the perennial master of CS-80 presets. I'll be adding on to this as time allows"

Presets created by Paul Schilling.
