Spatial Frontiers: Quadraphonic Concert Featuring Three Buchla Music Easels This Friday

via Todd Barton:

"Spatial Frontiers: Quadraphonic Concert

Noon, Friday, April 24, 2015
Schneider Museum of Art
With special guest Eden Mononym

The next performance is Friday, April 24, noon at the Schneider Museum of Art on the campus of Southern Oregon University. Todd Barton and Bruce Bayard are joined by Eden Mononym and all three perform on the Buchla Music Easel. The performance begins at Noon and is free and open to the public.

The series continues the exploration of space as a compositional tool, this time, expanding the quadraphonic sound into all four galleries of the Museum. For this performance, in addition to the Buchla Easel: Electric Music Box, Todd adds the Japanese Sho to the ensemble, to continue the investigation of acoustic instruments in the mix.

Eden Mononym is a local sound artist, working for Buchla Electronic Musical Instruments. He began tape splicing at the age of 10, essentially planting the seeds for a self taught journey. Exploring various techniques from modular electronics, computers, live coding, acoustics, to the avant-garde. Eden is always searching for an electro-organic sound, with a focus on expression based approaches.

Todd Barton is former Director of Composition Studies for the Music Department at Southern Oregon University and Resident Composer Emeritus for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Todd is currently Consulting Artist for Buchla Electronic Musical Instruments. After four decades of exploration, Barton is still delving deeply into the ever-expanding frontiers of musical expression: from his DNA derived Genome Music to innovative scores for plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival; from performances of Zen Shakuhachi Meditation Music to avant-garde music for electronic synthesizers and computers; from performing with luminaries of jazz and poetry to lecturing on music and composition from the Middle Ages to the 21st Century.

Bruce Bayard began oil painting at age 9, and although briefly attended the University of New Mexico, is largely self-taught. He has worked in various media and techniques including oil, acrylic, casein, collage, lithography, etching, screen printing, pencil, crayon, encaustic and assemblage.

In 2000, Bayard began an exploration into digital technology as a means of creating art, producing archival pigment prints. During the last couple years, he has been exploring performance and multimedia improvisation with an ensemble that combines sound, voice, dance, poetry and video collage.

all best wishes,
Todd"

Pittsburgh Modular Officially Announces Modular Effects Pedals

You saw the teaser pics here. The following is the official press release:

"Pittsburgh Modular makes modular effects pedals dream come true at Musikmesse 2015

PITTSBURGH, PA, USA: modern, fully-patchable, modular synthesizers and accessories manufacturer Pittsburgh Modular is proud to launch its Patch Box line of modular effects pedals — redefining both modular synthesis and the venerable stomp box by creating unique patchable effects units for guitarists and keyboardists — at Musikmesse 2015, January 15-18 in Frankfurt, Germany...

In a seismic shift in the definition of what a modular synthesizer can be, Pittsburgh Modular’s Patch Box redefines modular synthesis around the venerable stomp box by creating a monster performance device for guitarists and keyboardists alike — a patchable, modular system designed to handle anything. As a playground for unrestricted creativity, the Patch Box is a fully-patchable, customisable performance pedal enclosure. Its open architecture allows users to create unique effects unattainable with standard, fixed-signal path guitar effects. The Patch Box is not just another empty Eurorack case, however. Rather it can be packed to the gills with the functionality of (up to) five highly-tuned modules integrated into a heavy-duty steel enclosure that’s as road-ready as it is ready to use.

To protect the tone of user instruments, thoughtfully the Patch Box features a true BYPASS and a unique preamp with extremely high headroom in addition to a pair of fully-buffered outputs. Custom-engineered soft-limiting circuitry built into the preamp adds character without unwanted noise at higher gain settings. Said preamp has dual, buffered outputs to allow for complex signal routing, but for patching a single modulation or audio source into two destinations, the patchable signal splitter is a perfect solution. Also known as a MULTIPLE, the signal splitter has one input and two outputs, allowing any signal to be routed to two destinations.

Dual, assignable expression pedal INPUTS allow the Patch Box to easily integrate third-party expression pedals anywhere into the signal path to allow for realtime foot control of any voltage-controllable parameter or split the signal from the foot controller to control two parameters at once. Dual, assignable A/B foot switches — SWITCH 1 and SWITCH 2 — expand signal routing options. Perfect for use as on/off switches or to flip between two signals, the foot switches can be patched up to enable/disable individual modules or route audio and control voltages. Try patching a modulation source, such as an LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) or external expression pedal, through the foot switch to enable or disable the modulation while playing. Patch the outputs of two effects into one of the foot switches to bounce between effects. With two independent, patchable foot switches to play with, there are countless options for realtime signal routing. The last stage of the Patch Box signal path is a master OUTPUT level control. Adjust the output signal level to connect with a wide range of devices.

Furthering flexibility, the Patch Box is available as an empty case, ready and waiting for user-customisation, courtesy of an ever-increasing selection of Pittsburgh Modular, Dwarfcraft Devices, or other compatible Eurorack-format modules. Meanwhile, the Patch Box is also available in a number of preconfigured so-called Complete and Core effects systems that highlight the wide range of Pittsburgh Modular and Dwarfcraft Devices effects modules — from stunning filters to character-rich analogue delays, sweeping phase shifters to nasty distortion, and much more besides... all are available to interact with and manipulate in entirely new ways! Why don’t we take a closer look at what’s on offer?

Being billed as “A Modular Exploration of Time and Space,” Time Box Complete comes complete with a Patch Box enclosure, Analog Replicator (wide-range analogue delay module), Reverb (voltage-controlled digital reverb module), Lopass Gate (integrated lowpass filter, VCA, and lowpass gate module), LFO2 (dual modulation source module), and Multiple (dual passive signal splitter), plus a 12-pack of patch cables from premier Eurorack modular synthesizer accessory specialist Nazca Audio. Alternatively, Time Box Core comprises Patch Box-housed Analog Replicator and LFO2 modules, plus a six-pack of Nazca Audio patch cables.

Next up, Filter Box Complete makes modular filtering and signal-crushing downsampling a flexible musical experience, thanks to a Patch Box-housed Filter (multimode state variable filter module), Lopass Gate, Crush (analogue downsampling module), Follow (envelope follower module), LFO2, and Multiple, plus a 12-pack of Nazca Audio patch cables. ‘Downsizing’ somewhat, Filter Box Core offers filter sweeps courtesy of a Patch Box-housed Filter, Follow, and LFO2 modules, plus a six-pack of Nazca Audio patch cables.

Phase Box Complete comes complete with a Patch Box enclosure preconfigured with a Phase Shifter (16-stage analogue phase shifter module), Lopass Gate, LFO2, and Multiple, plus a 12-pack of Nazca Audio patch cables. Phase Box Core makes massive liquid simplicity reality with Patch Box- housed Phase Shifter and LFO2 modules, plus a six-pack of Nazca Audio patch cables.

A collaboration with Eau Claire, WI, USA-based handmade effects pedals and synthesizers specialist Dwarfcraft Devices, Dwarf Box Complete celebrates this partner company’s expertise in sonic destruction by partnering up their Big Distortion Sound Machine (parallel distortion module with two distinctly different fuzz flavours) with Pittsburgh Modular’s Filter, Chain Reactor (quadraphonic, voltage-influenced chaotic waveform generator), and Toolbox (multi-purpose slew, noise, sample & hold, and inverter) modules in a Patch Box enclosure, plus a 12-pack of Nazca Audio patch cables. Coming full circle, those favouring a more streamlined approach to a destructive palette could consider the Dwarf Box Core, comprising Patch Box- housed Big Distortion Sound Machine and LFO2 modules, plus a six-pack of Nazca Audio patch cables.

There it is, then. Nine new products, no less — Patch Box enclosure, available without any modules, and two sets of four preconfigured systems, each offered as a Complete system, full of modules, or as a Core system, partially filled with room for additional modules. Pittsburgh Audio has truly made the dream of modular effects pedals come true. They will all be being demoed and displayed in Hall 5.1, Stand C53 at Musikmesse 2015, April 15-18 in Frankfurt, Germany. Come check them out!

The Patch Box modular Eurorack performance pedal enclosure will be available to purchase from Pittsburgh Audio’s authorised dealer network in May 2015 at a suggested retail price of $349.00 USD.

Time Box Complete will be available in June 2015 at a suggested retail price of $1,199.00 USD; Time Box Core will be available in May 2015 at a suggested retail price of $779.00 USD.

Filter Box Complete will be available in June 2015 at a suggested retail price of $1,149.00 USD; Filter Box Core will be available in May 2015 at a suggested retail price of $739.00 USD.

Phase Box Complete will be available in June 2015 at a suggested retail price of $1,029.00 USD; Phase Box Core will be available in May 2015 at a suggested retail price of $799.00 USD.

281e As Oscillators

"Here is a simple, didactic demo using the Buchla 281e Quadraphonic Function Generator (normally used as an LFO, pulser and EG) used as 4 oscillators (sort of). The 281e doesn’t have much frequency range nor does it track well but you can work around it and get some fun layers. It could serve as a limited but useful auxiliary oscillator x 4. Here is a link to a rough video demo: www.hightail.com/download/UlRRWGJPK3hmVGJvS3NUQw
note: I have a moment of dyslexia in the video and say '258' but really meant to say "285'"

New KOMA Elektronik POLTERGEIST - Analog Quadraphonic Audio Mixer

Published on Jan 20, 2015 KOMA Elektronik

"PLEASE USE HEADPHONES FOR THE BEST QUADRAPHONIC SOUND IMPRESSION

KOMA Elektronik's new POLTERGEIST Eurorack module enables users to manipulate up to four audio/CV signals quadraphonically or stereophonically in new and ghostly ways.

The POLTERGEIST is an analog Eurorack format audio/CV mixer, panner and VCA that goes beyond the usual two dimensional standards and enables hands-on quadraphonic mixing and panning with a staggering amount of VCAs. The four individual channels each include a VCA with CV input, performance-oriented clickless solo and mute switches that engage upon release for perfect timing, pan with CV input over 360 degrees (however, with the proper CV signal you can spin the sound around infinitely), a FIELD knob to add an inverted version of the signal to all mixer outputs, an ORIGIN knob to control pan modulation from the Master Pan CV input, and of course an input with Gain control. Spatial animation is easily achieved by adjusting these parameters along with outside CV control from other modulation sources.

With a flick of a switch, the POLTERGEIST can function as a stereophonic mixer as well. In the master section are 4 mixer outputs dedicated to each quadrant or left and right depending on which mode it is in. There is also an auxiliary stereo input going directly to the summing bus (pre-master VCA). Create your own compressor by using another module like an envelope or comparator into the Master Gain CV Input, a half-rectified, inverted CV input where positive CV reduces the Master Gain and negative CV is ignored. At the end is the Master Volume knob with CV input.

Pan position is highly controllable on an individual level for each channel. Slope (also controllable via CV) controls the curve of the pan: on one end the signal remains at one output for a long time then quickly jumps to the next; while on the other end, the signal stays at the output for a shortage before it slowly begins moving to the next. Shift each or all channels pan positions from 100% to 0% to -100% with the Master Pan CV input. By adjusting each attenuverter on each channel, complex choreographies are possible.

Additionally, while the POLTERGEIST comes AC coupled to protect amplification equipment from DC signals, a dip switch on the back allows it to be DC coupled to process CV signals as well. It measures at 28HP wide. The KOMA team has worked over a year and a half on this entirely new design as this module premiers our patented analog method of controlling quadraphony and mixing.

The POLTERGEIST will be available at select retailers worldwide in Spring 2015. Come by booth 6990 (hall A) at NAMM to try out the POLTERGEIST for yourself, or catch us at one of our quadraphonic events in Oakland, Portland or Berlin."

Buchla Music Easel iProgram Card Tip No. 3 from Todd Barton & Upcoming Quadraphonic Performance

Published on Nov 29, 2014 Todd Barton

"Just realized even when the iProgram Card for the Buchla Music Easel is in "remote" mode you can still get CVs out of the physical Easel's Inverter out, Envelop Detector out and Mod CV out jacks.
Thus you can synchronize, affect and connect other Buchla modules to your Easel. And you can control, program and save those Easel output settings via the Easel iPad app."

And the upcoming performance featuring Todd Barton & Bruce Bayard:

"Quadraphonic: Space as Metaphor

Beginning Friday, August 1, Todd Barton and Bruce Bayard, performing as the duet Control Voltage Therapy, presented a series of concerts every First Friday at the Schneider Museum of Art. The concerts were every First Friday, August through December beginning at 11am. This coming Friday will be the final concert in this series. The performances are free and open to the public. Performances begin at 11 a.m."

Todd Barton Butoh for Easels

via Todd Barton

"I'm proud to announce the premiere performance of my new piece, Butoh for Easels. On Friday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. at the Schneider Museum of Art on the campus of Southern Oregon University I will be joined by three amazing synthesists: Bruce Bayard, Eden Mononym and Adam Scramstad to perform this piece for 4 Buchla Music Easels (analog synthesizers) in quadraphonic sound space. This is part of our ongoing series: Quadraphonic: Space and Metaphor Not since the 1970’s group, The Electric Weasel Ensemble spearheaded by Don Buchla and Allen Strange, have this many Music Easels been seen and heard in a single performance space. This new composition was created for the reverberant acoustic of the Schneider Museum coupled with a quadraphonic surround-sound system. This will be a unique sonic experience! I know many of you on this list are from out of town and won't be able to be here, but I hope to have good video and audio of the performance available. If you are in town I encourage you to make it -- there is nothing like quadraphonic sound LIVE! Also, there will be exciting solo performances by Eden, Bruce and Adam!

all best wishes,
Todd"

Easel Both Mode Programming

Published on Oct 8, 2014 Todd Barton

"Here’s a little thought on programming the iProgram Card iPad App while the physical Easel’s Control switch is in “both” mode. Though I am a composer and definitely do not understand the circuitry of either the iCard or Easel that has not stopped me from exploring ways to make “both” mode useable, flexible and expressive. toddbarton.com"

Side note: Todd Barton will be performing with the Buchla Music Easel along with three others in Quadraphonic: Easels in Space Nov. 7 at Schneider Museum of Art.

Some info on the patch via Todd on Muff's:

"Here’s a little thought on programming the iProgram Card iPad App while the physical Easel’s Control switch is in “both” mode. Though I am a composer and definitely do not understand the circuitry of either the iCard or Easel that has not stopped me from exploring ways to make “both” mode useable, flexible and expressive.

I beginning with the most basic patch, i.e. the Basic Setup that comes with the app:

What I discovered is in order to have more options in “both” mode I need to change a few parameters in the app patch, namely taking the Mod Osc to “low” and the Mod switch to f.m.

This is a pretty good rule of thumb – for more options keep the switches and sliders in the app patch in their lowest position. Of course you’ll have to tailor this statement to your aesthetic.

Here are my changes to the above Basic Setup for use in “both” mode:

"I’m guessing the reverse process it possible, that is, taking a complex app patch and simplifying it in “both” mode – exploring what shorting bars, cables, slider positions and switches give you a useful “both” patch and “remote” patch. More on that another day. cheers! Todd"

Quadraphonic: Easels in Space Nov. 7 at Schneider Museum of Art

"There have not been 4 Easels in performance since the Electric Weasel Ensemble in the 1970’s. This is a rare and exciting free event!

Todd Barton, Bruce Bayard, Eden Mononym and Adam Scramstad will perform solos, duets, trios and quartets of freely improvised electronic music."

Spatial and Sonic Gestures Using the Buchla Music Easel iProgram Card

via Todd Barton: "I'm really stoked about this new use of the iCard in tandem with the 206e/227e to bounce different sounds around in space!

Here’s my little study in Spatial & Sonic Gestures using the Buchla Music Easel/iProgram Card and Skylab with the 227e System Interface.

By programming the 227e with the 206e Preset Manager I was able to create separate patches for separate speakers in a quadraphonic array. Using the Last and Next buttons on the to 206e I can scroll through various speaker configurations.

I created 6 patches and saved them to the iProgram Card. Using the Down and Up buttons the iProgram Card instantly scrolls through these patches. By simultaneously pressing the buttons on both the 206e and iCard I can precisely control speaker placement and swirl speed. Or I can create a wide variety of patch changes and speaker changes.

The recording is from the headphone output of the 227e and thus captures all four speakers. My wish was to be able to do an actual 'concrete' style piece in real time. So . . . this is in real time with just an Easel/iCard and a Skylab with a 259e/281e/292e. The effect for the majority of the piece are the Easel’s spring reverb. Near the end I kick in an Eventide Space pedal."

PITTSBURGH MODULAR ANNOUNCES THE CHAIN REACTOR LIMITED EDITION MODULE

via Pittsburgh Modular

"Our second limited edition module, the Chain Reactor is a quadraphonic voltage influenced chaotic waveform generator. The module is available now exclusively at pittsburghmodular.com. Production of the Chain Reactor was limited to 50 modules and once it is gone, it is gone.

The Chain Reactor combines two of our classic VILFO modules with two additional free running LFOs to create an endless supply of chaotic fluctuations. VILFO1 and VILFO2 feature our unique voltage influence control. Voltage influence works differently than standard voltage control, it allows the incoming CV to mingle with the LFO waveforms in interesting ways, creating unique modulations and patterns. The output of each VILFO is a voltage controlled variable waveform that shifts from a triangle to square wave.

The Voltage Influence Circuit
A typical Voltage controlled oscillator works by using a CV input to directly control the oscillation frequency. The more voltage sent to the CV input, the higher the frequency of the oscillator. The lower the voltage, the lower the frequency of the oscillator. Voltage Influence works by using the CV input to attenuate the frequency of the oscillator while at the same time injecting some of the voltage from influence CV input to the feedback loop of the oscillator. Results can vary from subtle to chaotic. Subtle results can be similar to tremolo, shuffle, or soft reset while more extreme settings produce glitchy, rhythmic, chaotic fluctuations in the frequency of the oscillator."
