"This video focuses on the sound and functions of the VST plug-in 'SQ8L' (developed by Siegfried Kullmann), which faithfully reproduces the sound source architecture of the hybrid digital synthesizer 'Ensoniq SQ-80' that was released in 1987, and examines it from various angles, from preset playback to sound creation.

The SQ-80 is known for its unique sound character that combines lo-fi digital waveforms (8-bit single-cycle waveforms) with analog CEM filters, and has been used in a variety of genres such as synthwave, industrial, and film music. "SQ8L" reproduces this digital waveform ROM, envelope, LFO, and multi-timbral functions with high precision, allowing you to re-experience the charm of the old SQ series in a modern DAW environment.

This demo uses PlayOnLinux on WattOS, a lightweight Linux distribution, to wrap Windows VST plug-ins with MiniHost Modular and run them. It also works stably under Wine, and is a useful example of VST operation in a Linux environment.

"Enter Space!" says Sinclair Spectrum ZX through its Currah uSpeech synthesizer. The Atari STE and its Yamaha YM2149F chip in all its square wave glory does exactly that. The tools used to control the STE are NSQ (Near Synthesizer Quality), Chip Synth and MaxYMiser.

The powerful beats are coming from NI Massive except for the Hi-hats and noise bursts which are also Atari STE. As usual external reverb and delay are added. Hope you enjoy it!

"Item is in great condition for its age. Was opened up and thoroughly cleaned. All functions work perfectly, Filters are all in tune with each other, oscillators in tune. LED screen is bright and clear, and has no dead pixels. Has the latest OS 3.5 which allows access to the hidden waves (via sysx patches or the free sq8l vst which also acts as a patch librarian (highly recommended).

Comes with the Original manual which is in good condition as well.

There is also a cassette of patches from a Music store in Ferndale, Mi. This is untested.

Also includes the somewhat rare SQX-10 (B) Sequencer Expander cartridge pre-installed. This greatly increases the amount of sequences that can be stored.

It is the later plastic body version, which is preferable over the much less reliable metal case versions.

It was also modded to run on AA batteries, so if the internal battery ever gets low, you will only need to pop in 2 new AAs."

Batteries for patch storage of course. Anyone confirm the comment on metal case versions?

Note some of the patch names on the left reference other synths.

"There IS such a thing as a Free Lunch!

Rarely has the 'you get what you pay for' concept been more wrong than in the case of the absolutely free SQ8L VST instrument from Synthmiester Siegfried Kullmann. If you would have told me 20 years ago that someday an IBM-compatible PC would be able to run a spot-on software-based clone of the SQ80, I would have said 'yeah right, and Weird Al Yankovic will have a number one album and Battlestar Galactica will be an acclaimed series.'"

Using FPC for drums, V-Station for bass, Sytrus for arped pad and SQ8L for Moog lead. Octave shifts and pitch bends are also done with little guy.

I actually picked up the Korg nanoKEY and nanoKONTROL myself. They are really nice devices. The knobs and sliders on the nanoKONTROL feel great. They nanoKEYs not so much, like over sized laptop keys, but they are functional and velocity sensitivity is a nice touch.
