THIS IS CRAZY! Whimsical Raps ATRIUM | Superbooth 2026

video upload by Milk Audio Store

"Atrium by Whimsical Raps is a five voices of analogue synthesis, controlled and modulated polytimbrally. we’ve taken ideas from our decade of modular exploration, and rethought how we reach into polyphony.

Each voice is shaped by its harmonic energy while three core timbre modes push into richer territory. from simple suboctave and noise waves, through frequency modulation, and landing in formant synthesis reimagined. all squeezed through a lowpass/gate combination, providing balance and occasionally emphasis."

Whimsical Raps - Atrium - First Experiment - Completely Wild!

video upload by Richard Devine

"five voices of analog synthesis, controlled and modulated polytimbrally. We’ve taken ideas from our decade of modular exploration and rethought how we reach into polyphony.

Each voice is shaped by its harmonic energy while three core timbre modes push into richer territory. from simple suboctave and noise waves, through frequency modulation, to formant synthesis reimagined. all squeezed through a lowpass/gate combination, providing balance and occasionally emphasis.

no digital multi-effects here, just spectres in the machine. a novel configuration of three filters, two delays, and feedback. front and almost center — this resonant body is meant to be played. sequenceable, modulatable, while feeding back not just sound, but shape for unfolding cybernetics.

and to modulate! everything mappable to everything else, tactile input extended on the fly, mapping as a performance in itself. Sources are dynamically phased across voices and stretched in relative duration. gestures captured into five recorders, extending play rather than overriding it, all twisted in time at your whim.

Atrium is deeply learnable, and for those moments of quick change, instantly recallable. extensible with usb and midi and cv input."

-CALC- Les daims aux bois III - Atrium study- Whimsical Raps,

video upload by -CALC-

"I've been sitting with this piece for a good few weeks.
It was originally recorded on holiday as audio in a forest in France but I wanted to capture the patch in video form too. The original audio take has more magic than this version to me (perhaps it was the time and place) but the core is still there in this take.

Atrium is using a sub-selection of 31EDO notes with 5 clusters forming the harmonic basis and freqs is also mapped to notes to give another 5 subset of offset chords based on the clusters. These subsets are controlled by a sustain lower limit control to give an easy access performance control. The voice is mostly exploring simple use of the Form synth and the overtones/multiphonics give several other harmonies to explore.

Initially the LFO is muted but creeps in mapped to voicing to add movement.

There is some additional reverb from a TX-6 mixer but other than that its all Atrium.

I find this patch incredibly meditative and love journeying through the consonant world it inhabits. Atrium is capable of so much more sonically but this is a place that feels safe and content and I keep returning.

The patch is shared in the Atrium Discord for those interested to try it out."

Strumming on ATRIUM: Keyboarder wants to be Guitarist #whimsicalraps

video upload by Pete Midi

"Whimsical Raps Atrium implements a very special way to play a synthesizer. In combination with the special sound engine it's fun to discover a new world behind the classical synthesizer universe. In this jam I explore the possibilities of the strum touch plate and the chord/scale settings with a distorted guitar like sound. Note that no dedicated guitar effects like overdrive or distortion were used, just a reverb (Eventide Blackhole) and a standard delay (Ableton). The backing track I made with the IK Multimedia Modo Bass and Drum plugins."

Whimsical Raps Atrium // Monome Norns // 36 Minutes of Uninterrupted Ambient

video upload by Lesjamusic

"My friend Simon (aka mosaictapes on Instagram) came over the other day, and we were toying around with the Sines app on Norns. We added some noise options, including modulating the frequency with noise, giving this lovely instability to the sound. Then added two sequencers: One wave based and one stochastic drift based. Here the drift sequencer slowly plays the sine waves, represented by the bars in the Grid (sorry about the cable in the way!). DM me on IG if you would like a copy of this edited script.

I added an evolving bass drone on Atrium - something that's super easy to do with the internal gestures and LFOs. Cocoquantus has a little loop of the Norns, then there's Oto Bim and Boum, and Walrus Audio Slöer just off screen. There's no talking here, and no changes in the patch - I just thought I would leave it running for you to enjoy / mong out to 🫠🫠🫠

Whimsical Raps ATRIUM: sound engine exploration (no talking)

video upload by Pete Midi

"Clearly beyond a normal analog synth but I like the extravagant concept and the unique design of Whimsical Raps ATRIUM. Still a few things are missing that hopefully will be implemented in a future firmware update. But, in principle, the ATRIUM has the features that make it a perfect drone and lead synthesizer for me. In this video I just checked the basic possibilities of the sound engine in combination with the user interface elements. I will try out the sequencer options at a later date …

Atrium: On Systems

video upload by Whimsical Raps

"Atrium is a new instrument where playful gestures meet dynamic systems.

This video articulates the core systems for composition and environment building in Atrium. Methods for structuring play, while allowing and encouraging the artist to embed personal creative ideas. These systems set the rules of play, subtly redefining the specifics of familiar gestures.

The next chapter, Atrium: On Connections, looks beyond these five walls. Exploring how Atrium can be extended, as a leader or collaborator.

The Swarm by Atrium Instruments

video upload by DECIMA1

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Knob-For-Knob Functionality
We at Artium Instruments are committed to knob-for-knob functionality. Every feature of The Swarm is directly mapped to a knob, button, switch, or jack, ensuring effortless control. There's no need for menu-diving or complicated sequences of button presses to access features; everything is conveniently accessible at your fingertips.

Curated, Onboard Effects
With over a decade of experience in the effects industry, we have carefully curated a selection of effects that seamlessly complement the synth core. Unique to The Swarm is its capability to use the onboard effects with other equipment, allowing you to route external audio through the inputs on the back.

Plug and Play Functionality
The Swarm utilizes a USB-C MIDI host for simplicity and ease of use. Most modern class-compliant MIDI controllers with USB functionality should plug in and work immediately with zero setup. Additionally, The Swarm provides power to your controller, streamlining your setup process. For older controllers that only have DIN connections, a USB to DIN converter can be used to ensure compatibility. (These converters typically cost $10-20)

Quality Craftsmanship, Intentional Design
We've invested considerable thought into crafting the overall feel of the instrument. From the layout of the knobs to the choice of colors, artwork, and the weight of the enclosure, every detail has been considered. These details matter to us because we recognize that the connection a user forms with a piece of gear is almost as crucial in the creative process as the sounds it produces. We hope you can feel the love and passion we've poured into every aspect of The Swarm, from its sonic capabilities to its design aesthetics.

Open Source Platform
Artium desktop synths use an open source platform known as Axoloti or Ksoloti for development and implementation of its products. Click here for details on the open source platform being used.

SYNTH CORE

Oscillator
The Swarm features a SuperSaw oscillator with 8-note polyphony. This oscillator is composed of seven individual saw waves stacked on top of each other. The magic unfolds when you detune the waveforms by applying a frequency offset, resulting in one of the most massive synth sounds available.

Three One Synth Releases From Important Records - Alessandro Cortini (Buchla), Eliane Radique (ARP 2500), & ELEH (Serge)

Important Records wrote in to let us know they have three new releases showcasing one synth each.   Alessandro Cortini's "Forse2" was made entirely on the original Buchla Music Easel, Eliane Radique's Adnos I-III was composed with an ARP 2500, and ELEH features an 8 panel Serge modular wynthesizer.
Full details and links:

"-Alessandro Cortini’s “Forse 2” is now available. Made entirely on an original Buchla Music Easel, just like 'Forse 1' but with an entirely different mood to it.

This is a 2xLP and the second in a series of 3 releases we have planned with Alessandro. Hopefully the CD Box will be out early next year. A cassette for our sister label Cassauna is in the works too for his Synthi A explorations.

Kraftwerk Residency at MOMA New York & Original Autobahn Video

Kraftwerk Autobahn rare original video 1973

YouTube Uploaded by TheSchurtenberger on Jun 13, 2009

via Wikipedia:
"The instrumentation used on the song's 1974 recording was highly innovative at the time and is notable for the significant influence it had on many subsequent genres of electronic popular and dance music. Notable aspects of the arrangement included:

Electronic percussion pads, played by Wolfgang Flür.
Use of a classic 'Moog bass' sound to play the bass line, playing an octave riff with added analogue echo.
Liberal use of phasing on synths to play the chords.
Use of a vocoder to process some of the vocals.
Use of the so-called 'motorik' 4/4 drum beat in the song's final section.

The arrangement also included acoustic elements such as guitar and flute."

"Over eight consecutive nights, MoMA presents a chronological exploration of the sonic and visual experiments of Kraftwerk with a live presentation of their complete repertoire in the Museum's Marron Atrium. Each evening consists of a live performance and 3-D visualization of one of Kraftwerk's studio albums—Autobahn (1974), Radio-Activity (1975), Trans-Europe Express (1977), The Man-Machine (1978), Computer World (1981), Techno Pop (1986), The Mix (1991), and Tour de France (2003)—in the order of their release. Kraftwerk will follow each evening’s album performance with additional compositions from their catalog, all adapted specifically for this exhibition. This reinterpretation showcases Kraftwerk’s historical contributions to and contemporary influence on global sound and image culture."
