Two New Synthesizer Evolution Books by Oli Freke
Details follow via the author, Oli Freke:
These two new volumes in my Synth Evolution ‘zine series were launched at last weekend’s SynthEast event in Norwich, UK. They are Volume 3: Modern Classics, and Volume 4: Modular Greats. I’ve moved into the 21st Century with these two! As ever, they feature my signature hand-drawn illustrations and are full of facts, figures and tech-specs:
Volume 3: Modern Classics
Synthesizer Evolution: From Analogue to Digital (and Back) author Oli Freke returns with a new volume in his Synthesizer Evolution A6 zine series. The first two volumes (Vintage Synths and Drum Machines & Samplers) focused on vintage electronic instruments from the 1970s and 1980s. Volume three moves into the 21st century, showcasing a selection of the most interesting, impactful, and—arguably—best synthesizers of the past two decades.
The synths in this book celebrate the vast range of sonic possibilities now available to musicians and producers. From analogue wonders to extraordinary digital creations, from tightly designed monosynths to open-ended polyphonic beasts, each one is more marvellous than the last! Also featuring ‘Desert Island Modular’ choices from Robin Vincent, Steve Davis, Panic Girl and more.

Alesis Andromeda A6 on the cover.
Volume 4: Modular Greats
The modular resurgence of the past 25 years has been a wonder to behold. Where musicians were once chained to their DAWs, we are now liberated once again to wire, patch, and modulate in the real world, choosing from a mind-boggling array of options.
Modular Greats celebrates the fusion of art, logic, science, and serendipity in modular synthesis, highlighting some of the best-selling, most creative, and most impactful modules of the 21st century. Featured manufacturers include Make Noise, Mutable Instruments, TipTop Audio, Intellijel, Rossum Electro-Music, Doepfer—and many more!

The Residency at the ARPs for All Project program is a new collaboration between the Alan R. Pearlman Foundation’s ARPS for All program and The Record Co, a well-known and beautifully renovated music facility in Boston. The Record Co features incredible recording and performance spaces plus a wonderfully-curated collection of vintage ARP synthesizers, including the only publicly-available ARP 2500 in the USA.
The Alan R. Pearlman Foundation’s mission is to make ARP’s classic and groundbreaking synthesizers widely available in order to inspire future generations of musicians. Based on the submission form, the Foundation will select and support an artist in the creation of a special musical work incorporating the vintage ARP synthesizers at The Record Co. The end result could be a full album, a single song, a synth-backed video project, a series of synth tutorial videos, or another concept that inspires you to create.
HERE'S HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS!
The recipient will have access to The Record Co facilities and gear, the current ARPs for All Instrument collection, and 5 days of time. "@Panic Girl Martha and I got a demo of the tiny TX-6 from @teenage engineering. This thingy blows my mind! Yes, it is pretty expensive, but since I saw this I can not get it out of my head. I can think of 1000 things I could do with it. And the OB-4 speaker system is nuts too...."

Upgrading the DFAM
video upload by PanicGirlVids
"In this video I'll show you how I "upgraded" my DFAM from Moog with bigger knobs. Whenever I tuned the single steps on the DFAM it took me quite a while to get it right, so I decided to give the DFAM knob set from Thonk a try. You'll need a bit of patience to install them all properly, but it's doable in about 5-10 minutes all in all. And it does look pretty nice in the end, don't you think?

Along with the maker videos there have been artist videos as well. I thought I should share them to pay tribute to the event during the global lockdown. The above is a running playlist of what's gone up so far. As new maker posts go up I'll link back to this post for the full list of videos. It's great to see some of the people and personalities that would have attended the event. Enjoy. :)

JoMoX: XBase09 til AlphaBase - An Interview with Juergen Michaelis of JoMoX
JoMoX: XBase09 til AlphaBase from HerrSchneider on Vimeo.
"Juergen Michaelis - the head of JoMoX Berlin - giving insights of the history with HerrSchneider once entering the world of synths and drummachines roundabout 20 years ago to help Juergen as a sales rep, after they met each other in a totally different world.
Introducing the wonderful concert of Panic Girl and Jericho on Superbooth17 and showing the gig of Juergen himself with his AKAHSA synth on Superbooth16 this is quite good entertainment for all of us at least knowing the scenery nowadays or one of the products.
Still the live introduction of the ALPHABASE by the inventor himself is showing the fun he has with his own baby still nowadays as he already had 20 years ago, it should be passion."
