"The DX Programmable Digital Drum Machine from Oberheim fills the professional musician's need for an afford able. easy to use, state- of- the- art drum computer. Based upon the modular Oberheim DMX Drum Machine, the DX offers the sound and features of the DMX in a less expensive, more integrated package . The DX is not a drum synthesizer; it is a complex microcomputer system programmed with digital studio recordings of real drums. It doesn't sound like a rhythm box. it sounds like a drummer. Not only does the DX sound like a drummer, it can play like a real drum mer; with rolls, flams, odd time signatures, uneven phrases, changing tempos, or even off the beat. Up to 2200 notes can be stored in the DX, recorded in any of 100 Sequences of any length or time signature. Drum sequences can be recorded in real time or one note at a time. Any of the 18 individual drums (including crash cymbal) or individual notes can be recorded, erased, and then re-recorded until the drum beat is exactly right. The sequences can be combined to form up to 50 songs. Each song can contain up to 255 sequences, arranged in any order, to form a complete composition. In addition, there is a Swing mode which will give rhythms the uneven feel that is used so often in jazz and other music.

There are individual tuning controls for each voice on the rear panel and each of the six DX voices has its own output. so you can record them on separate tracks. or EQ them separately. There is also a 7 input stereo mixer to allow you to mix all of the drums into the stereo and mono outputs. The DX can run in synchronization with the Oberheim DSX Digital Polyphonic Sequencer and the other components of the Oberheim Music System as well as other sequencers. There is a programmable external trigger, so you can control the DX with sequencers, synthesizers. or even a drum kit. A battery maintains power to the memory when the DX is turned off. so that you don t lose your sequences when you turn off power. "Photos are take of the front, sides, and back. These have to be positioned just right, for example, the front has to be straight up and down exactly. The photos are then saved as .bmp or .jpg files and uploaded into SL where they become 'textures.' Then, 'prims' are created. Think of these as 3D physical MB. Like other 3D modeling programs you can create 3D shapes such as a box or ball. In this case, you create prims that are the shapes of the parts of the synth. Then you simply put the texture on the various parts and get it just right. Finally, you link them all together and violá, you have a synth. I recently had someone create the keyboards in my studio - the Andromeda, Karma, and Virus. You can see them on this page.

You are right. There are now various music stores that have lots of synths in them and more are springing up all the time. In fact, complete music studios complete with with sound are there too, some quite sophisticated.

Synth Wiki on Sequencer.de and The First Synth To...

Remember this post on the first synths to introduce something new? In the comments, the world of next tuesday suggested putting it in a wiki. I agreed and said I'd eventually do it. My main concern was putting it on a wiki that made sense and wasn't going anywhere soon. I thought of Wikipedia, but that didn't make sense as there isn't really a unified Synth section, Synth Wiki ended up getting overwritten with spam, and I did not want to start up my own wiki. I then remembered Moogulator of sequencer.de set up a bi-lingual synth wiki in German and English. I asked Moogulator about putting up the synth list. He set up an account for me and it's up. Title link takes you to the new home for the list, however obviously check out the rest of the wiki for more info on synths. You can join and add as well as edit content. If you want to add to the list of The First Synths To... but do not want to join the wiki, my original post will stay up. Feel free to comment there and I will update both my post and the wiki, however the wiki will become the uber list as updates to the wiki will most likely not make it back to my post. That would be too much work for me to maintain and the wiki really is a better home for the list. I will update my old post with a link to the wiki article and I'll add a link to the wiki on the right of my site so you know how to get there any time. Thanks Moogulator!
