NAMM: UAD goes Firewire!

UAD ON FIREWIRE!

It’s been a long time coming, but we are incredibly excited to be able to announce that UAD Plugins are finally coming to the legion of users who only have Firewire ports available.

Introducing the UAD-2 Satellite…shipping this month!

Launching at NAMM 2011, the UAD-2 Satellite is Universal Audio's answer to the long-standing request for a Firewire-based UAD Card. No longer must a customer have PCIe slots or an ExpressCard port to be able to use UAD, now anyone with a Firewire 400 or 800 port will be able to bring the class-leading family of UAD plugins to their productions, wherever they go.

The UAD-2 Satellite is a rugged metal enclosure containing either the power of a UAD Duo or UAD Quad card inside. Slim yet reassuringly solid and sporting an illuminated UA logo on the front, the UAD-2 Satellite is powered with an included adapter and provides either FW400 and FW800 connectivity. Full PCIe-equivalent performance is available via FW800, with FW400 provided for total flexibility with a trade-off made in available bandwidth. Initially UAD-2 Satellite will support Mac only; PC development is underway and will come as a free update when complete. UAD-2 Satellite will share a FireWire port with an Audio Interface or Hard Drive, again for a trade-off in bandwidth. For more information please visit the Universal Audio site, linked below.

'This is a really exciting announcement, both for UA as a company, and for legions of musicians and engineers wanting to tap into UAD-2 plug-ins via Firewire,” commented Universal Audio President Matt Ward. “The UAD-2 Satellite is a sleek, high-quality product that delivers even higher quality results.'

'UAD-2 Satellite is the result of UA listening to our customers, and giving them a processing solution that is both elegant and powerful,” added UA Senior Product Manager Lev Perrey. “Coupled with our roadmap of exciting new plug-ins, we anticipate this product expanding our 40,000-strong UAD user base significantly in the years to come.'

Notable UAD-2 Satellite features include:
* Access the UAD Powered Plug-Ins library on select Firewire 800 and 400 equipped computers
* Compatible with a wide range of modern Intel-based iMacs and MacBook Pros (PC support in development)
* Run larger mixes in Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, Nuendo, Performer and more — without taxing host computer CPU
* 5 models to choose from: DUO (Core); DUO Flexi (w/ $500 Plug-In Voucher); QUAD (Core), QUAD Flexi (w/ $500 Plug-In Voucher), and QUAD Omni v.5.7 (w/ 50 UAD plug-ins)

Best of all, the complete line of UAD-2 Satellite DSP Accelerators is shipping late January and the price for UAD-2 Satellite is the same as for the equivalent PCIe card!

The Legend Returns Fairlight CMI-30A Prototype to be Revealed At NAMM

The official press release:
"-Production prototype of the Fairlight CMI 30th Anniversary Edition debuts tomorrow at NAMM
- $20,000 ‘vintage sampler’ faithfully recreates the look and feel of the 80’s classic which changed the course of music
- Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Jean-Michel Jarre, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock and many other icons of the eighties made musical history using their Fairlights
When the Fairlight CMI arrived on the scene in the eighties it changed the way we made music, forever.

Today every sampler, digital synthesiser, sequencer and audio workstation can trace its lineage back to this legendary machine. Known for its solid, hand-built quality and iconic sounds, the Fairlight CMI holds a special place in history and in the hearts of musicians everywhere. Used extensively by Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Jean-Michel Jarre, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock and many others, the profound and lasting influence of the Fairlight CMI on the history of modern music is hard to exaggerate. It was, without doubt, the quintessential sound of the eighties.
Now, after thirty years, the Fairlight CMI returns. The prototype of the limited anniversary edition, the CMI- 30A, will be revealed at NAMM this week.

While maintaining the hallmark look and feel of the original Series II Fairlight, the CMI-30A harnesses the latest technology to deliver ‘that Fairlight sound’ no other system has achieved. Unlike modern samplers which strive for precise reproduction and accordingly produce a sterile sound, the CMI of the eighties made no apologies for imposing its own character. The quirks of this pioneering digital audio technology have been faithfully modelled in the 30A. The result is a distinctive sound which, in the spirit of vinyl records and tube amps, delivers a nostalgia hit.

In its initial form, the CMI-30A replicates the functionality of the original Series II and Series III CMIs. The user experience is quite different from that of a conventional PC and mouse and like the original is based on a light pen which interacts directly with a screen.

The character of this new instrument is continuously variable in real time. As you crank up the 30A’s unique ‘goodness control’, the quality morphs from pristine 36 bit floating point fidelity into the soulful sound that made music history. Turn it up to 11 and it sounds more Fairlight than Fairlight – chock full of eighties goodness!
Orders are now being taken for production units. Software development is continuing towards the release version which will deliver a unique combination of classic Fairlight warmth and cutting edge processing power. Only a fraction of the available resources are used to reproduce the original Fairlights. Optional software upgrades will be available for those who want to unlock that surplus capability.
With Fairlight father Peter Vogel at the helm, Fairlight Instruments brings a little eighties magic to the cold, hard digital world of 2011.

Starr Labs MicroZone U-648

via this auction
Just saw this after the previous post. Note this is not on their 2011 line-up, but it hasn't been posted here before.

"The Microzone U-648 is programmable touch sensitive MIDI keyboard arranged as (6) 48-key piano keyboard "ranks" stacked vertically, or in the Y-axis. Think of the ranks like the tiers in a 2-level organ. The keycaps have been placed to identify the black and white keys corresponding to the normal piano keyboard, or six piano keyboards. The keys are removable so that you can create any pattern you like that would reflect your choice of tunings.

Each of these individual keyboard ranks has its own Zone-number and each Zone may be programmed with a variety of response and MIDI performance settings. The Zone boundaries may also be changed to encompass a different range of keys if necessary. You'll want to make changes for instance, when you are creating a tuning map for a new tonal system.

Each key can be tuned individually which allows the U-648 to easily create new scales, note-clusters, patterns, and drum maps for special purposes such as film scoring and multi-media control.

The U-648 is equipped with:
* 4 Programmable Pots
* 4-way programmable Joystick
* Ribbon controller,
* Sustain Pedal jack
* Expression Pedal jack
* Handcrafted Natural Hardwood body
* Each of these controllers may be programmed to (8) simultaneous effects
* MIDI and USB i/o
* Phantom power supplied through the MIDI cable
* Power supply and adapter included.

The instrument is 33” x 14” and weighs 12 pounds."

STARR Labs on eBay

Didn't realize they had an eBay shop. I will add them to the right shortly.

See this post on their latest NAMM releases.

"Finally! Some new software available for download here! You'll find a Master Sysex file that allows you to reset your up-to-date Ztar to factory installed 'song' settings. We've also included a zip-file full of individual sysex files for you to pick and choose from. But what we're really excited about is our Ztar Ableton Live Demo Session pckg download. In it we give you our in-house demo .wavs and samples, sysex files for Ableton Live fingerboard layouts, and the actual .als file. Think of it as a template to use as a starting point from which you can modify and customize to your needs!"
