"Mini amp with a 4093 oscillator synth inside. The original idea was to build a synth in a mini amp and still use the amp as it is intended, which it does. Then I realised that you can get some things going through input to interact with the Amp Synth. The synth lowers in volume when you put an external unit through the input jack, so I added a mod on the side for this to work much better when using the headphone output, like in this video. The unit still works as an amp when the synths turned off and you can used the synth through the amps internal speaker instead of using the headphone output.

I also used a Realistic Concertmate Accompanist Drum Machine through the input.

Magnetovore Presents the Magnetic Cello

Magnetic Cello Demo-Two Grenadiers

A short demonstration of the magnetic cello. The magnetic cello has a similar size, shape, and playing style of an acoustic cello. However, instead of a horsehair bow, the player uses a magnetic rod (the "bow") to induce a voltage in a coil (the "bridge"). This voltage is used to control the volume of the signal. The pitch of the instrument is controlled by resistive ribbons (the "strings") which control a second voltage. Note that this creation does not use a microcontroller or digital circuity--just capacitors, resistors, and the occasional IC, like in a radio.

I expect to start selling the finished Magnetic Cello (and similar instruments) in a couple of years. If you are an experienced cellist, contact me and I'll see if I can get a prototype in your hands."

Electronic Prototype Station

Uploaded by magnetovore on Jul 11, 2011

Here is my Prototype Board.
This is a customized breadboard, where an electronic circuit can be quickly and temporarily prototyped. The electronic parts fit into the rows of sockets (which are electrically connected to other sockets). In this video, I am showing some functions I have added onto the board.

It has 3000+ tie points, two 9v batteries, a key switch, three potentiometers, and a small amplifier. I prototyped a VCO circuit on it to demonstrate the board in action. Watch the video for more."

A Pre-Synthesizer-Era Synthesizer - The Mixtur Trautonium

flickr By jochenWolters

"More than thirty years before Bob Moog conceived of the synthesizer as we know it today, Friedrich Trautwein developed his Trautonium, a highly complex, monophonic electronic musical instrument.

The pitch is "selected" via a string that is pressed against a metal bar and, in essence, works like a ribbon controller.

Although you may not be familiar with this fascinating "pre-synth", chances are that you've already heard some of the sounds it is capable of producing: The bird sounds in Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 movie, "The Birds", were created by Trautonium virtuoso, Oscar Sala.

Jürgen Hiller has been building and repairing Trautoniums for more than twenty years. The one you see above is being custom-built for a customer and includes an unusual percussive module labeled "Schlagwerk" (German for "drum mechanism")."

See the Trautonium label below for more.

Update via Tomoroh Hidari on Facebook: "I had the pleasure to work on a replica of a mixtur trautonium built for the Technisches Museum Vienna, together with a friend. it's an amazing instrument! here's a (free download) album we did on it (and laptops) in '08: http://alien.mur.at/ujvary/jetztzeit.html"
