Korg Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Keyboards in Limited Edition Colors

"MELVILLE, NY, September 5, 2013 - Korg continues its 50th anniversary celebration by offering a run of keyboards in limited edition colors: the MicroKorg and the 61-key Krome Music Workstation.

The popular MicroKorg synth/vocoder, which celebrated its 10th birthday in 2012, is available in a limited-edition Gold finish [see this post] with the original wood side panels. Quantity is limited to 2000 units world-wide, starting in December 2013. First launched in 2002, MicroKorg made the synthesizer available to everyone by combining mini-keys, battery power, a simple-to-use interface, and phenomenal sound, all at an attractive price. Today, it's still a popular choice not only for keyboardists, but also for bass players, singers, guitarists, producers and DJs looking to add its vintage sounds to their instrument arsenal.

The Krome Music Workstation is now also available in eye-catching, limited-edition colors. While supplies last, the 61-key version is available in red, blue, and gold color choices. Like the mainline Krome models, these limited editions offer a carefully chosen selection of piano and drum sounds derived from the flagship Kronos, as well as new electric pianos for high quality sounds at users' fingertips. Also included is a plethora of other sounds and powerful production tools such as a piano-roll style sequencer, complemented by a widescreen color TouchView display, for an intuitive and organic experience.

The Limited Edition MicroKorg can be found at Guitar Center locations in the U.S. in December 2013, for a U.S. Street price of $399.99. Limited edition Krome models in red and blue can be found in December at select, authorized Korg USA dealers - and gold models at U.S. Guitar Center locations - for $999.99"

SoftPot Homemade MIDI Guitar

Published on Aug 7, 2013 girtnessshroom·1 video

"Sorry for low sound quality, low video quality, my chronic mumbling, and generally low production values.

This is a video about a prototype of a sort of MIDI guitar I made. For want of a better name I'm calling it a "SoftPot" guitar because the main component that distinguishes it from a normal MIDI are the long touch sensitive strips called SoftPots. They are like normal potentiometers that you find under most controller knobs, but in strip form.

I appreciate that there are several similar instruments (MIDI guitars) that you can just buy off the shelf, but I never found one that was fretless, and I think this homemade version turned out a good deal cheaper. Plus, making stuff is fun.

Post any questions you have in the comments and I'll try my best to answer them all.

A Hybrid Digisound & Aries Modular Synthesizer at Switched On

Published on Sep 5, 2013 Switched On·49 videos

"This spectacular synthesizer system is a combination of Digisound modules (white faceplates) & Aries Modular (black faceplates). Originally there were two non-functional systems, an Aries Modular system and the Digisound. Switched On was asked to resurrect two separate system and combine them for the best arrangement of modules. The result was very pleasing to say the least!

This patch is based around the 4 wavetable based Digisound DCOs cycling through a bank of 8 wavetables each. Each DCO has 4 banks of 8 waveforms totaling at 32 possible waveforms. Occasionally you will see the bank being switched to allow a different set of 8 waveforms to cycle. By "multing" the pulse signal off the Digisound Quad LFO we are able to make all 4 Digisound DCOs step through various waveforms in time. One of the DCOs is being processed through the Digisound Ring Modulator to add some extra metallic brilliance, and another DCO is being processed through the Aries Frequency Divider adding even further versatility to the timbre. All 4 are being mixed and summed into the gorgeous sounding fully discrete state variable filter made by Aries. In our opinion the sound of the filter is somewhat reminiscent of a Sequential Circuits Pro-One. We are also sending just a touch of modulation from the Digisound Quad LFO to the cutoff frequency and resonance of the Aries Filter to add some extra animation to our sound. In this circumstance we are using the filter as an output stage as well.

We hope you enjoy the sounds of this very rare and unique modular system that we had the pleasure of working on!
