Season's Greetings from The Glasgow School of Art
Season's Greetings from The Glasgow School of Art from The Glasgow School of Art on Vimeo.
This one in via Alan, spotted on Creative Review. James Houston who created the video brought us a number of other brilliant pieces using vintage computer gear. You'll find links to them at the bottom of this post. Be sure to check them out. And of course, be sure to see the holiday channel below for more holiday posts! Some great ones have come in so far.
"Season's Greetings and best wishes from The Glasgow School of Art for 2014.
This year's seasonal e-card comes from alumnus James Houston. James graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 2008 with a first class degree in Visual Communication. He works in Glasgow as a moving image maker. http://www.1030.co.uk
The ensemble: A collection of vintage Mac computers, a Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum + 1 and a SEGA Mega Drive perform a rendition of 'Carol of the Bells' with lyrics re-written by Robert Florence & Philip Larkin in the Mackintosh Library at The Glasgow School of Art. Jacket by Ten30.co.uk (Alan Moore, GSA Textiles alumnus 2008).
James aimed to create a piece of Christmas music by appropriating past Christmas gifts. "I discovered that a few had the capability for speech synthesis so the obvious next step was to figure out how to assemble a choir." he said. "This is a process which is based on the last piece of work I did as a student at GSA." (See James' Degree Show film - Big Ideas (Don't Get Any).
Lyrics: Carol of the Bells
HAIL THE MACHINES
SWEET OLD MACHINES
BLOW OFF THE DUST
WIPE OFF THE RUST
CHRISTMAS HAS COME
JOY IS FORETOLD
FOR THOSE OF US
YOU NEVER SOLD

"A little sketch of a song! Really just jamming on a progression I've had rolling around in my head the past few days. Thanks for listening! Feel free to post any questions or comments.
The Prophet 08 patch is pretty simple. Triangle waves in a stacked two-layer patch with the arpeggiator clock divide set to eighth notes on one layer and sixteenth notes on the other. I was playing with the Boomerang III looper's "reverse"' feature near the end.
Gear: DSI Prophet 08, Casio SK-1, Korg ER-1 MKII, Boomerang III Phrase Sampler, Boss RE-20 Space Echo, Mackie LM3204"

ROLAND SH-2 SN 016741 with Original Silver Gig Bag via this auction
"The SH-2 is a powerful yet compact DUAL oscillator mono synth from 1979. It has a very powerful sound due to the lively UA726 based oscillators, the sweet Roland 24db filter and a very tight ADSR envelope as well as a few unique features. It does very fat basses as well as thick leads, its oscillators stay in tune very well and track from sub bass to super high pitches!"
ROLAND CSQ-600 vintage CV/GATE sequencer with case via this auction.
"The CSQ-600 is a very tight sequencer with 4 pattern storage of up to 600 notes. Its killer features are the ability to do TB-303 style slide steps and a very cool transposition feature. Have a look at the video below for a demo.
It can generate DINSYNC or CR-78 type sync as well as clock to external clicks from drum machines. It will work with any 1 volt/octave synth with positive gate such as Rolands, Arps, Octaves and Arturias and many others.
I don't think there's a more intuitive and direct sequencer for such gear! You can literally play the sequences on this machine, with quantized CV and no missed steps!
This particular unit was modified to quantize its trigger on external sync (as seen in video around 6min). This lets you transpose perfectly in sync with external triggers!
The unit comes in a nice Roland case from the same era, it's also the original TR-909 case."
