Nova Musik - Korg volca series with Rich Formidoni

Published on Jun 19, 2014 Nova Musik·117 videos

"Rich Formidoni from Korg USA stopped by to give us an overview of the Korg volca series of portable analog grooveboxes, which marry analog sound engines with onboard sequencers derived from Korg's Electribe music production stations.

Korg volca beats is a rhythm sequencer with an analog sound source at the core. It achieves the classic tone essential to dance music with a thick sound that´s distinctive of analog hardware. By further incorporating four lo-fi PCMs to control the playback speed, it can express the coarse graininess that transcends its intrinsic digital concept. The sequencer is constructed so that it emphasizes the spontaneity of adding and removing parts as well as pattern editing. In addition, it opens up possibilities for live performance with pattern effects, such as stutter.

Korg volca bass is an analog bassline groovebox. Detuning the three oscillators achieves the deep, modulating characteristics of analog sound. Furthermore, the combination of the envelope generator with the traditional 12 dB/oct low-pass filter used on the miniKORG 700S allows you to create hard acid house sounds with tones similar to those of a bass guitar. In addition, separately playing the three oscillators of the sequencer allows you to create sequences that combine the bass and lead parts as well as chord-like loops.

The volca keys is a 27-key analog lead synthesizer with built-in delay effects. You can enjoy wide-ranging synthesis, from chord playing or a crisp-sounding lead line detuned with unison, which are achieved by using the three VCOs, to a metallic sound using ring modulation. In addition, the sequencer's Flux function allows you to create loops with a groove not tied to steps. Knob adjustments can also be recorded so that resulting tone changes become a part of the loop."

FACT TV: Against The Clock - Luke Abbott

Published on Jun 18, 2014 FACTmagazine·299 videos

"Against the Clock is a series on FACT TV where we give an artist 10 minutes in the studio and see what they come up with.

Taking the challenge this week, Luke Abbott. After cutting his teeth on Trevor Jackson's Output label in the mid-'00s, Abbott found a home on James Holden's Border Community, sharing Holden's love of emotive, ecstatic dance music and releasing two albums on the label, Holkham Drones and Wysing Forest. Abbott also has one hell of a live set-up, as he demonstrated to FACT TV when touching down in London for a pair of recent live shows.

Filmed by Luis Muñoz and Pawel Ptak.

"The TR-909's clap featured one control the user could adjust: volume. That was not okay with us. I'm a huge fan of house music. I love the 909 clap. So this is a module I agonised over features I wanted it to have for a long time. And here it is. I hope you find it as useful as I do! ====Primary Features==== Just like the other Mutant Drums, the Clap is a highly versatile module. It is actually a voltage controlled LFSR noise oscillator as well as a powerful percussion synthesis engine! - feature-rich, analogue handclap percussion synthesis reminiscent of the 909 - pitch control of noise generator means you can create everything from vanilla 909 claps to broken, chiptune-like alien sounds - doubles as a voltage controlled, Commodore64-sounding noise VCO via the NOISE output and PITCH CV input - SUSTAIN control lets you crank up the clap's sustain and use the module as an abstract synth voice with external inputs! - external input allows you to synthesise claps from virtually any sound source you plug in - built in internal reverb effect derived from clap tone - reverb decay forms the decay of the clap sound, and is fully voltage controllable from short reverb "snaps" to long, whooshing tails! - you can select between internal and external noise sources as the source for the reverb sound generation, opening up really interesting sounds - DRIVE control lets you dial in anything from clean to extremely overdriven sounds - bandpass filter cutoff control"
