Modular Kick Drum Tutorial

Published on Aug 4, 2015 Voltage Control Lab

"Here is our first video tutorial, featuring the gorgeous Sputnik Modular Oscillator. This oscillator is perfect for kick drum programming thanks to a few special features that set it apart from some other basic oscillators.

This video demonstrates a starting point for kick drum sound design, utilizing a single envelope to control both the pitch of the oscillator as well as the amplifier it is routed through. By using this single envelope, we can tweak our sound dramatically simply by using the decay control on the envelope.

The waveshape function of the Sputnik Oscillator is particularly useful for adding in a bit more presence and providing some punch on the square and ramp wave side. The CV input with the attenuverter also offers a unique way to modulate the pitch of the oscillator, which is perfect for this kind of sound.

Sputnik is releasing a ton of new modules this summer, including their new Dual Oscillator, the Valve Multiplier and a pretty fancy lookin’ Spectral Processor. Look for more about these modules soon, right here on Voltage Control Lab or browse some of the new modules at MuffWiggler.

We will take this routing and idea further in our upcoming Sound Design for Modular Synthesis course, which will launch in mid-September!

Don’t recognize some of the above terms? We’ll also be adding our Modular 101: The Basics of Modular Synth around the same time!"

New Moog Mother 32 Mock-up

Slightly better than these.

via Sonicstate

"In much the same vain as the Roland System- 1m, the Mother 32 offers a basic all-in-one VCO synth voice that can be mounted in your euro case, or standalone. It also offers a 32 point patch bay and a 32 step sequencer...

[however] 'It's black, with really nice angled wood side cheeks on the mini-skiff that it comes in. This layout tracks very well with what I remember of the thing.'

So I think we can guess that this is pretty close to the actual synth. Moog isn't letting pictures out just yet so you'll just have to wait for the official announcement to see exactly what it looks like!

It's expected to be available in early October at a price of $599.

Layering Sounds on the KORG M500 & a Warning on Leaking Capacitors

Korg M500 demo/ GENERAL TECH NOTE for later 70's korgs/ oliver leslie preview

Published on Sep 23, 2015 sounddoctorin

"Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com shows some new features I wasn't aware of on the M500 micro preset (ie. the ability to mix settings... why didn't I try this before? Some fabulous sounds available that way I'd never explored) , but also shows a problem that surfaced in both the unit shown here and my own M500. Be sure to open yours and remove the 220uF 16 V capacitors. Note how there is probably acid eating the traces under them. Restore as noted in the video and also 33uF capacitors were having the same issue in mine. THose particular values seem to be fail prone at this age. I assume the same parts were being used in other synths of the ear including MS series, PS series... possibly my PE1000 I should also check. Tuning is varying some anyway.. Look for discolored traces. Not hard to see. I also show off my home made horn for the oliver orbital sound projector I'd just finished at the end. :-)"

Blue Lantern Re-Releases one of their First Modules, the Steiner 10Stage VCF

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

Blue Lantern is re-releasing one of their first modules, the Steiner 10Stage VCF, based on the Steiner Synthacon filter [see the update below for their first]. There are currently only eight listed for sale via this auction.

Details from the listing:

"Model: 10 stage diode based vcf. Influenced by N. Steiner's synthacon vcf. This is a re-release for me.

width: 6hp

depth: 1.5 inches, less than 2 inches clearance.

current: soon, tba.

Controls: Cutoff, Rez, bi-polar attenu-inverter FM knob, CV knob

What does this do?
This is an analog filter that uses a 10 stage diode core influenced by N. Steiner's synthacon vcf. You get Low pass, Band pass, and High pass inputs. All of them can be used at the same time to mix different vco's. The band pass section is what really makes this filter shine.

Some blue lantern improvements include dc removal on the rez circuit, jfet power coupling, and precision trimmers for cutoff and rez.

Through hole polyester film capacitors were used for the filter.

Does this filter make all the screechy warble like all the other Steiner VCF's out there?
It can if you like that, but I ship it out tamed and very musical. There is a 25 turn trimpot on the back where you can fine adjust exactly how far you want to push the feedback resonance. This design I have does not contain the common dirty pot troubleshoot most people complain about. The inputs also have a switch jack design to quiet any input jack not in use.

If you missed out on the first generation modules I released, here is your chance to see what all the fuss was about."

Update: I asked Blue Lantern what their first module was and they had the following to say:

"The first commercial module was the 6hp Diode VCF, and then the 6hp LM4250 VCF. I have to mention Shawn from Analog Haven for really pushing me to release at the commercial level.

These were released in 2009. So it has been about 6 years. The Diode VCF went through three generations: black, green, black again, and now matt black. Each previous generation was 200 size runs, and hand made-dam those days, no more ever again. These days I do 500 runs for each product. This recent version is the first to be made on the pick and place machines.

My first module ever made and sold was an arp 4075 vcf with a clear plexiglass frac rack format cover. That was made in 2003. Since starting I believe about 35,000 pcb's have passed my hands. Either duds, prototypes, or winners."

Arachnoid Attack! (Rhythm Wolf, Minibrute & The Weapon Pedal)

Drums coming from Rhythm Wolf with a bit of 'Howl'. Bass coming from the Wolf and being distorted by the Digitech Dan Donegan Signature pedal; The Weapon (it has a Sitar simulator on it, I will jam with that soon). The arpeggiated synth line comes from a Arturia Minibrute recorded clean. Everything recorded into Logic in realtime with no audio editing and keeping the FX minimal; compression, EQ and a touch O' verb. Again, sorry for the rough edits. I am new to using one than one picture, but I will soon master it."

Spectral Transformation

Published on Sep 23, 2015 wellurban

"Using Clouds' Spectral Madness Mode to transform a simple sawtooth bassline into a range of timbres and textures: ethereal, harsh, spooky and organic.

This is derived from the same bassline patch that I used for my previous Clouds video, but slowed down, with the filter envelope multed (through attenuverter and offset) into the Density input of Clouds. This means that the time quantisation of each note varies throughout its length."
