DFAM Drifting into ambience

Published on Jun 25, 2018 Robin Rimbaud-Scanner

"First play with the new Moog DFAM, a wonderfully inspiring musical tool. So far removed from being a simple 'drum machine.' Here I layered three live recordings of the DFAM processed through the Strymon El Capistan. Please try and listen on headphones if possible to capture the slowing ebbing away of the sound for the closing passage as it'll be lost on a computer speaker :-D"

Endorphin.es - Shuttle System by Audio_units / Beatworx from Bangalore, India

Published on Jun 25, 2018 TheEndorphines

"In the framework of our interviews within the final of Life is a trip contest, we spoke with our participants are from Bangalore, India: two talented brother duo - Ashwin Baburao and Ashrith Baburao: Audio Units / Beatworx Studio.

- How did you come to use synthesis in your music?
When we first started making music, about 8 years ago we would use more loops than synthesized sounds and were quickly running out of new ideas. We realised for electronic music to sound good and uniquely ours, we needed to use traditional (subtractive synthesis/sampling, etc) and non-conventional methods (additive/FM/granular, etc) alike to generate ideas and sounds.
We also figured that these sounds could be more human-like if we incorporated modulations to add expression like with most physical instruments. Besides, we come from a background that’s more about curiosity and being musically inclined rather than being formally trained so making electronic music seemed like the right choice and a whole lot more fun than learning to play the piano, no regrets!
Out of sheer need to be more creative and to find "our" sound, we started to mess around with VSTs and quickly got into the analog and semi-modular realm and the rest is history.

Analogue Solutions Introduces Dedicated Eurorack Version of the Treadstone

The desktop version was introduced back in December, 2017. You can find additional posts featuring the Treadstone here.

The following is a recap of the features via Analogue Solutions.

"Versatile Analogue Synth and Sound Maker

No compromise has been made with the construction of Treadstone. Cheaper options in parts have not been used.

Full rugged steel/aluminium case – no plastic mouldings
Good quality smooth, fully sealed against dust
Good quality knobs with spun aluminium caps
High grade double sided circuit board
Analogue discrete VCO, analogue SSM style 24db filter
High Quality 16bit DAC for MIDI-CV conversion Stable MIDI to CV
MIDI converter
MIDI loop sequencer
LFO, Noise, Sub Osc, EG, PWM, lofi digital echo
Analogue voice and modulation circuits
Stable analogue oscillator
Designed, built, tested and assembled in the UK
True retro analogue voice and modulation circuits used in the synth element to give an authentic retro [sound]

Analogue Oscillator

The VCO is very analogue and uses discrete components and op-amps. One oscillator, yet still sounds big - using PWM and Sub Osc creates a full warm and deep sound.

Analogue Low Frequency Oscillator

The LFO has triangle and square wave modulation signals.

Analogue Filter

Treadstone uses a four pole 24bB per octave multimode filter. The filter is a re-issue of the classic SSM2044, as used in many classic synths such as the Korg Poly 6, Monopoly, Emulator, SP1200.

Analogue Mixer

Audio signals such as the VCO, Noise, external audio are all routed to the VCF via an analogue mixer.

Analogue Amplifier

The VCA can be set so it is always ‘open’. This allows Treadstone to be used as an effects processor.

Analogue Envelope

The EG features ATTACK, SUSTAIN, and combined DECAY/RELEASE. It’s not really true to say it is an ASR envelope, it really is an ADSR - Decay and Release are both controlled by the same control. Saving space with little compromise in flexibility. It’s possible to drone or auto-repeat the envelope also.

Modulation

Great thought has been placed into modulation route choices, allowing a wide range of sounds to be produced, including percussion and ‘modular’ style sounds."

Moogbeat - Meu Maracatu Pesa Uma Tonelada (Nação Zumbi) - Minimoog performance - Carlos Trilha

Published on Jun 21, 2018 Carlos Trilha

"Carlos Trilha recria o clássico da Nação Zumbi com um único sintetizador o Minimoog Model D de 1972. Todos os sons que você ouve nesta performance, percussivos e harmônicos foram sintetizados e tocados um a um manualmente pelo músico.

Carlos Trilha recreates the classic of the Nação Zumbi with a single synthesizer, the Minimoog Model D of 1972. All the sounds you hear in this performance, percussive and harmonic were synthesized and played one by one by the musician."

Pulstar - VANGELIS by Trilha

Published on May 28, 2018 Carlos Trilha

"A piece of music from the album Albedo 0.39 by Vangelis.
. . .
"Pulstar" (possibly a portmanteau of "pulsar" and "star") builds on a synthesizer pulse sequence, a main line and various other synthesizer brass lines. It ends with a recording of the speaking clock.
. . .

Albedo 0.39 is a studio album by the Greek electronic composer Vangelis, released in 1976. It was the second album produced by Vangelis in Nemo Studios, London, which was his creative base until the late 1980s.
It is a concept album themed around space physics (the reflection of light i.e. physical truth[3]). Its title is inspired by the idea of a planet's albedo, the proportion of the light it receives that is reflected back into space. The album title refers to the average albedo value of the planet Earth as it was in 1976."

The first track I made after screwing together my 'New Game +' modular rack. The Hermod gets notes from the OP1 and sequences everything (so damn quick). Morphagene does a sort of 'advanced shimmer', as I recorded, pitched up and mangle the original patch. Bastl Thyme is space."

"Roland SH-101 synthesizer with the manual, mod grip, service notes along with extra replacement pots and sliders.

The SH-101 is in excellent shape overall. There is a bit of rack rash on the bottom and a few scratches here and there, but none of the plastic is cracked and has held up fairly nicely. there are a few rough edges of plastic as well, but nothing that really is visibly notable unless you're looking at it up close. There is also Velcro on the bottom side from the previous owner that I never bothered removing. Every single function of the keyboard has been tested and is verified to be working. The AC Adapter that came with it died several years ago so I've been using the batteries instead which I will include. The battery cavity also is clean and free of acid damage as shown in the pictures."
