Mu-Tron: The Groundbreaking Story of The Sound of The ‘70s | A Conversation with Mike Beigel

Reverb

"The Mu-Tron story starts with a synthesizer and includes a plane crash, a chicken-coop visitation from Stevie Wonder, and a downfall beset by a faulty gizmo called, appropriately enough, the Gizmotron. In this extended profile from our upcoming feature film, The Pedal Movie, Mike Beigel gives us his own take on the history of his famous circuitry.

ARP 2600 Ring Modulator as VCA

O.Z. Hall

"I don't want to flood the channel, but I thought this might be interesting to review. On the ARP 2600 I'm using the Ring Modulator as Voltage Controlled Amplifier (VCA). Normally the Ring Mod is used to get "clang" tones for bells, or to get the 'X-Wing fighter' radio voice. It's also usable as a VCA. In fact it's kind of "super" vca because it is a "4 quadrant" multiplier vs the normal VCA which is a 2 quadrant multiplier (google it ... interesting stuff)."

GLASYS: The Hydrasynth is a Beast! I Created an Entire Track With It

GLASYS

"The ASM Hydrasynth is a very deep and unique synthesizer and has quickly become one of my new favorites. Here's a tune I wrote called "The Hydra" that was made using nothing but 8 patches I programmed on this synth.

I recorded it pretty spontaneously, the main melody/pad sound was improvised and recorded without a click, I then started overdubbing the other sounds. Since nothing was recorded to a grid, the timing is pretty dynamic and... human. :)

I created the Hydra background in Photoshop out of some ancient Greek art.

Hope you enjoy!"

"Patching a modulator/demodulator pair tuned to musical source material. Slight detuning can create dramatic timbral shifts.
