Orbital | How I Play Live

DJ Mag

We go behind the scenes with Orbital to find out how their live show works.

Made up of brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll, Orbital played Inner City Electronic Festival in March, just prior to the UK's COVID-19 lockdown. We caught up with the seminal UK rave duo to talk through how they play live.

Baseck Plays: Roland TR-6S

Perfect Circuit

"@baseck shows us that the size of the Roland TR-6S is no representation of its booming sound. The TR-6S is the latest drum machine from Roland that carries the torch which has been burning bright for decades now.

This is a 6 channel drum machine with an FM sound engine, an expansive preset sample library, and detailed circuit models of the Roland TR-808, TR-909, TR-606, TR-707, and more. This is undoubtedly a powerful addition to Roland's hardware lineage that is sure to bring unexpected movement to your live sets.

Woggle Science!! Frequency to Voltage

MAKEN0ISE

Looking for patch ideas to try with Richter Wogglebug's audio outputs? Wondering what the module's "Influence" input does? You've come to the right place! This video explores using the ever-experimental Wogglebug as a crude frequency-to-voltage device as it attempts to track both an oscillator and an audio recording.

Grendel - RA-99 Grenadier

via this auction

The Grenadier RA-99 is the successor of the Grenadier RA-9, a semi-modular analog synthesizer with variable waveform VCO, triple resonant filter (2x bandpass and 1x lowpass), sub oscillator and pink noise and audio input for external signals. Midi is still omitted and the control is done via CV/Gate.

Compared to the RA-9, the Grenadier RA-99 is enhanced by the following features:

14 instead of 10 parameters for sound control
20 instead of 14 Patchpoints
The switchable oscillator (square/triangle) was replaced by a variable waveform oscillator (trapezoid)
Pink noise source
Instead of a single decay envelope there is now a variable AR or two decay envelopes (depending on the settings)
The filter was changed from 3x bandpass to 2x bandpass and once lowpass
The oscillator can now be controlled with 1v/oct (x2), 5V/oct, 15V/oct
The housing is no longer made of coated steel but of extruded aluminium
Therefore the sequencer and the mini-keyboard had to give way
