Gestures on Sidraw

Meng Qi

"Sidraw is an experimental electronic instrument, based on Ciat-Lonbarde Sidrazzi circuit board, and my interface experiments.

There is a way to design electronic musical interface, which is not to consider sound parameters, but to think from the angle of circuit interference, I call it 'Circuit Expression'.

It can be seen on various experimental electronic musical instruments. From the Crackle Box by Michel Waisvisz back in 1970s, to the new Landscape Stereo Field and Martin Howse Dark Interpreter. UK synth designer Tom Bugs also had been utilizing them in the Weevil series of work. I've commissioned a special version of Chirper from Tom Bugs, which may have pushed the release of Board Chirper model a year later.
This method has a lot to do with circuit instability, touch and feedback. by touching selected circuit nodes, new connections are made, circuits behaviors are affected.

On sound output, it may result in a complex change on a combination of sound parameters (loudness, pitch, timber), and expressive reactions can be found.

I've found expressive behaviors from touching specific parts in Sidrazzi circuit, thus Sidraw is born.

Sidraw

The Sidraw made its first appearance back in December of 2019.

STG Soundlabs Oscillator Now Shipping

Some nice pics in via STG Soundlabs. Their new Oscillator, two years in the making, is now shipping in both Moog MU and Eurorack format.

Here are some details on the module:

"Oscillator is an analogue relaxation core oscillator with sawtooth, triangle, and sub octave square wave outputs, and an integrated drift generator.

Oscillator’s tuning system is unique in modular synthesis. There are three controls: Range, Semitone, and Detune. Range and Semitone are stepped controls on potentiometers. Their response is best described with the following graphic: [pictured below]

The Range knob allows you to select wether Oscillator is an audio oscillator or low frequency oscillator. LFO, 32’, 16’, 8’, 4’, and 2’ are ranges most synthesists are familiar with, but the Wide mode allows you to sweep through 5 octaves with the Detune knob.

The Semitone knob sets a positive semitone offset to the oscillator and functions in all ranges. To make common values easier to get to, the root, fifth, and octave all have twice of the rotational degrees allotted to them as the other semitone values.

The Drift Generator could be described as a drunken walk, or perhaps a random wobbulator. In technical language, it is a random, in rate and peak, bipolar linear function generator with smoothing. Some people patch their entire synthesizer to do what this thing has built in! It can move veeeery slowly or squiggle very quickly. Its output is normalized to the modulation input, so it can be easily defeated by plugging a new source into the modulation jack.

This module has a physical depth of only 2 inches.

MU Price: $295, Eurorack Price: $265"

Sean Tyas Novation Peak demo for SynthFest UK 2020

Sound On Sound magazine

Special created by Sean Tyas for the virtual SynthFest UK 2020.

Sean Tyas has been at the forefront of the trance genre and electronic music spectrum for decades. A name synonymous with sound perfection his production and remix credits has seen him work alongside names such as Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Above & Beyond and Dash Berlin.
During his own production process Sean is not one to settle on presets alone, as an avid and passionate Sound designer a synthesisers flexibility and capabilities are key for its success.
In this session Sean will harness the power and features of Novation peak to build and construct a complex and production ready patch from scratch.

Symple Sidecar - SympleSEQ Expansion Module

Lower West Side Studio

"Lower West Side Studio introduces the Symple Sidecar an expansion module for the Hexinverter.net SympleSEQ sequencer.

The Symple Sidecar adds GATE per STEP, CLOCK OUT, RESET and HOLD CV IN capabilities to the SympleSEQ.

Follow the link for more info; https://richsstudioproject.wpcomstagi..."

"Expand the capabilities of your Hexinverter.net SympleSEQ sequencer by adding the Symple Sidecar companion module.

The Symple Sidecar connects to the SympleSEQ behind the panels via 2 patch cables (included). Once connected each sequence step outputs its GATE signal to an individual GATE output jack.

A CLOCK output is available to send either the SympleSEQ’s internal clock or to pass-through an external clock which may be controlling the sequencer.

HOLD and RESET control voltage inputs allow further sequencer control.

The Symple Sidecar is compatible with any Hexinverter.net SympleSEQ sequencers containing expansion ports on the PCB. All SympleSEQ modules produced by Lower West Side Studio contain these ports. If you are not sure if your sequencer has these ports or would like them added then please Contact Us."
