Superbooth 2023: U-he - Zebra 3 Alpha Features
video upload by sonicstate
"[apologies for the chunky video from 4:00]
We spoke to Urs Heckmann, founder of U-he, at Superbooth 2023 and got a glimpse of the upcoming Zebralette 3, the free version of Zebra, which includes one oscillator and an MSEG with a few extras, and is shaping up to be a significant update from its previous version. Urs mentioned that this release is more of a prototype and alpha version, and the team is focusing on releasing it ahead of Zebra 3 as that is still in development.
The new editor allows intuitive wave drawing for oscillators, MSEGs or modulations and looks very easy to use, letting you drag shapes in any direction, drawing lines to produce sequences, and a tool that rotates the curve to change the phase of a waveform. There are also guide curves that manipulate the curve in the background, allowing users to create complex shapes with ease. Most importantly, the synth is already sounding pretty amazing, as you'd expect from Urs' passion project.
Zebra 3 Available: soon. Price TBC
Zebralette 3 Available: Sooner. Price: Free

Superbooth 2023: Mad Sound Factory - Kommutator - Midiator - Clocker
video upload by sonicstate
"At Superbooth 2023, we spoke to Art from Mad Sound Factory, a new company from Armenia, about their latest products. Art introduced us to the Kommutator, which allows you to connect everything together, using alligator clips banana plugs, Euro rack a or Bastl instruments type, creating a big matrix of connections. It comes with switches that determine where the connections run, making it an ideal tool for modular enthusiasts.
Art also showcased the Midiator, a device that works perfectly with Soma's Ornament 8. It allows you to assign MIDI data to knobs by making a snapshot of the MIDI you're receiving. You can send different MIDI notes to different channels, sequencing it with Ornament to use it as a MIDI sequencer for all kinds of MIDI gear. The Mediator is equipped with alligator clip connections and is not powered passively. It requires 12 volts to operate and will be available soon, along with the Utilities.
Kommutator price: 150 Euros

Superbooth 2023 Silhouette - Visual Synthesiser Now With Audio To Visual Sampling
video upload by sonicstate
"At Superbooth 2023, Sonicstate spoke to Pit from Silhouette about their eponymous synthesizer. Silhouette transforms grayscale data from your hand movements in front of the camera directly into audio waveforms. The blue rectangle represents the area where the grayscale data is sampled and transformed into audio. By changing the area and modulating the visual, interesting sounds and loops can be created. One unique feature of Silhouette is that it can load picture files to create interesting audio effects.
This year, Silhouette has a new feature that allows audio samples to be translated into visuals, which can then be used as a source for audio. Pit demonstrated this by sampling his old Korg MS20 audio and translating it into a visual file, which he then used to create new waveforms. Although the translation is not one-to-one, the errors that occur during translation serve as a source for creativity. Pit plans to implement this feature into the Silhouette synthesizer and close the circle from visual to audio and back.
Silhouette Visual Synthesizer Price: 3,900 Euros

Superbooth 2023: Theresyn - Theresyn - Les DiffYUseurs
video upload by sonicstate
"We spoke to Nori Ubukata from Theresyn at Superbooth 2023 where he showcased his updated Therasyn instrument. The latest version has a more refined look than its predecessor with a different wood finish and is more aesthetically pleasing. The basic functionality of the Theresyn remains the same, however, some improvements have been made, such as the addition of pulse waves and the ability to choose the percentage of the pulse.
Theresyn's second model is Les DiffYUseurs, designed to simulate the sound system of an Ondes Martenot, it is a handcrafted instrument with a metal diffuser with two gong modes; one small and one larger gong, which have a different frequency response. The Diffuser also includes a reverb with tremolo effect that work together.
Les DiffYUseurs Price: €399,
Theresyn Price: €2,800.

Superbooth 2023: Reliq - Hybrid Control Surface
video upload by sonicstate
"We spoke to Kyriakos from Reliq at Superbooth 2023 and got a sneak peek of their upcoming hybrid control surface. This control surface comes with a breakout module and can be plugged into any eurorack case with a standard power supply. The control surface has 16 inputs and 16 outputs that accept any audio level, line level, eurorack level, or control voltage. The surface also has 32 CV outs, 16 gates, and three MIDI outs, as well as a USB host and a breakout connection. The device features a 16-rack step sequencer, which can be used to create a matrix sequencer. The sequencer has a step mode, but the company is also working on euclidean modes, followers, and small emitter tracking. The sequencer parameters are non-destructive, and users can change the pitch, velocity, and duration of each step. The company plans to transform the grid into a piano roll, and users will be able to enter notes directly on the panel. They are also working on isomorphic keyboards and clip integration.
Reliq's hybrid control surface is still in the alpha stage, but the company hopes to move to beta in the next few months. The device is designed to control any instrument from a single interface, whether analog, digital, sequencer, or eurorack. Although the company cannot make any promises, they hope to release the device soon.
Reliq Hybrid Control Surface Price: 1,600Euros. Early order Price: 1,099

Superbooth 2023: Decksaver - New Covers
video upload by sonicstate
"We spoke to Jake from Decksaver at Superbooth 2023 where they showcased a wide range of new covers. The company is known for providing high-quality polycarbonate covers for various musical equipment to keep them safe from damage. Some of their newest releases include the Decksaver for Summit, the 4ms 48 and 64x pods, the Roland Boutique range, the Erica Bassline, and the LXR. They also have covers for cheaper equipment like the Akai mini play and the Launchkey 37. Jake said that the production cycle takes about three months from research to pre-production, depending on the type and size of the equipment.
One of the unique features of Decksaver is that they offer custom covers working closely with the instrument manufacturers. They also use different weights of polycarbonate material depending on the equipment's size and type, with prices ranging from £15 to £120. Decksaver's covers are favored by many musicians, including a famous artist who saved thousands of pounds worth of equipment from damage due to a leak in his studio by using Decksaver covers."
