Soundscape #1 // OP-1 Field

video upload by Stefano Mattia

"First days with the OP-1 Field.
Having a lot of fun sampling snippets of audio back and forth and stepping out of the grid.

For this soundscape, I recorded a short loop with the new Dimension synth engine. I then stretched it with PaulXStretch in Ableton. When I was happy with the results, I recorded the stretched audio to the cassette tape on the field, which adds all that luscious noise and saturation, I copied that track to the studio tape, added the 'bass' line, which is in fact a sample of a piano note pitched way down, and a simple rhythmic element. There's a bit of mother reverb on the master track, and some limiting in post.

The b-roll comes from a walk around my house, I loved how gently the evening sun light was enfolding those leaves.

Enjoy!"

Kodamo MASK1 // Proudly Digital & Uniquely Powerful

video upload by Jorb

"After my time with it, and the sort of reflection I get to find while editing, I think the strongest appeal of this synthesizer is finding identifiably digital sounds without any of the complex workflow of FM or wavetables, with just enough options past the oscillator shapes to feel like its not a 'dishonest' approach to those sounds.

You can find characteristically digital sounds, with the rest of the architecture being familiar / subtractive and it almost feels like I cheated my way to a modern man's PPG. Delightful.

HUGE THING that ended up cut, the manual is super good, really serious shoutout. Color prints, full pages, bound nicely, the whole thing. Love it.

Also I managed to also cut any take where I mentioned Roland's draw and chop oscillator options, which could be seen as a simplified bit masking. But rest assured I made the connection , don't comment like I didn't smh please

"This is the app we've all been waiting 40 years for! With this librarian you can avoid the hassles of trying to get Tape Load/Save working on the finicky 909, and still backup, restore and move banks around on your 909 over MIDI!"

Oberheim Begins Shipping OB-X8 Analog Synth Desktop Module

Follow-up to this post. Larger pics & the official press release follows:

San Francisco, CA – June 9, 2023 – Oberheim is now shipping the OB-X8 desktop module. For the first time ever, all the sonic power of the Oberheim OB-X, OB-Xa and OB-8 has been condensed into a footprint that is compact enough for studios of any size, and convenient enough to take out on the road.

Following the extraordinarily successful release of the award-winning OB-X8 keyboard in 2022, the desktop module version boasts an identical sound engine, featuring an all-analog signal path with discrete VCOs, VCAs, and filters. The top panel maintains the knob-per-function sound designing experience, with immediate access to virtually all the synth’s parameters, allowing easy and precise creation of unique sounds.

Although the paddles and keybed are missing from the module version, the Arpeggiator and Keyboard Split & Double functionality are maintained, so the OB-X8 desktop is ready to go when connected to your favorite controller.

“The OB-X8 desktop module provides a great opportunity for musicians with limited studio space to get into the classic Oberheim sound, heard on so many hit records over the past 45 years”, said Taiho Yamada, Head of Marketing for Oberheim. “And the combination of synthesis features from the original OB-series synths means that new sounds can be created that were not possible until now.”

Oberheim is a legendary American synthesizer company that has created instant-classic instruments, from the iconic SEM to the modern OB-X8. Founded in 1969 by Tom Oberheim, the company earned the respect of the world for producing innovative synthesizers with unparalleled sonic richness and character. Today, Oberheim brings its products to market with the help of the Focusrite organization and renowned synth maker, Sequential.

The OB-X8 eight-voice analog synthesizer desktop module is available now with a US MAP price of $3,499. For more details visit www.oberheim.com.
