Inspiration is All Around You

video upload by MAKEN0ISE

"Pete from the Make Noise Instagram channel here, filling in this week with a 'hangout' video, in which we go exploring Asheville looking for inspiration to patch with.

Record shops! Movie stores! Waterfalls! This one has it all."

Timestamps:
0:00 - introduction
1:40 - surface noise texture exploration
5:30 - VHS tape ribbon controller
7:18 - waterfall tape loop
11:05 - outro

"Here is the New Music article mentioned in the video: https://newmusicusa.org/nmbx/synthesi...

A note about using VHS tapes as ribbon controllers: at some point, it seems that VHS tapes changed formula and the newer tapes just don't work for this sort of thing. Instead, look for older tapes where one of the sides has more of a matte finish— this is the side you want to have facing up (newer tapes tend to have two shiny sides and neither of them will work for this experiment).

Thanks for watching, and happy patching!"

MICRORACK presents itself as a highly accessible analog modular synthesizer, designed to combine dozens of modules, build unique instruments, and encourage learning and fun in sound synthesis. Its compact and portable design allows users to take it anywhere, facilitating sound experimentation on the go.

During the interview, Leo shares his vision of making modular synthesis more affordable and educational, highlighting the importance of providing affordable kits and a simple design for all types of users. MICRORACK offers unlimited variability, allowing users to customize their setup and combine it with anything they can imagine. Furthermore, its DIY and open-source approach encourages collaboration and the contribution of new ideas to the platform.

In the exclusive initial demo, Leo shows us how MICRORACK can be used to create a wide range of sounds, from textures, basslines, and drones to complex rhythms, demonstrating its potential for both beginners and experienced musicians. The system's flexibility allows for integration with other equipment via CV and MIDI, processing external audio, adding effects, and integrating it with any existing setup.

MICRORACK also stands out for its compatibility with other modular systems, including Eurorack, thanks to its compact module design and 3.5mm jack adapters. via this Reverb listing

"Ultra rare find – Original Casio RA-1 RAM Packs × 4 – New Old Stock – For vintage Casiotone keyboards

This listing is for a set of 4 original Casio RA-1 RAM Packs, designed for use with select Casio Casiotone keyboards equipped with a RAM slot.

These units are NOS (New Old Stock):

Never opened
Never used
Batteries have never been replaced
Still in factory original packaging
As per the original manual, these RAM packs allow you to store tunes from the keyboard’s internal memory by converting them into digital data saved on the cartridge.

🧠 Unlike the more common RA-100, the RA-1 is extremely rare – there is virtually no information available online about this model, which makes them particularly desirable for collectors and Casio enthusiasts.

The user manual only explains how to replace the battery, further confirming these were purely for melody/data storage.

🎹 Originally intended for Casiotone models from the mid to late '80s (exact compatibility unknown – please verify with your instrument)."

Video clips were recorded in 4K (60 fps) on a Panasonic Lumix GH5 and were edited in Davinci Resolve Studio 19 running on a HP Zbook 17 G7. Audio was recorded in 96 KHz 32 bit directly into the Solid State Logic SSL 2+ USB-C audio interface via an Apple iPad Pro running Cubasis 3. All audio output has been processed in Davinci Resolve Studio 19 for optimal broadcasting."
