"Proteus is an algorithmic sequencer with a short attention span.
Proteus creates a melody, then repeats that melody over and over again. Each time the melody is played, there’s some chance that Proteus will get bored and scrap the melody in favor of a brand new one. How fast it gets bored is up to you, and depends upon the PATIENCE parameter.
Proteus’s melodies aren’t simply random; they are generated by an algorithm designed to make sequences that are more humanlike and musical. You can save and recall melodies that you like using the Pattern Bank.
