DX5 playing Depeche Mode "Come Back" (bare)

DX5 playing Propaganda "P Machinery"

YouTube via DX5 | October 24, 2010

"Just a try. Original version had a fantastic production by ZTT records, with Steve Lipson and Trevor Horn on the mixing desk, and I just only spent a few hours sampling some of my keyboards (JX8P, DW8000, etc) into the EMAX and sequecing a simple backtrack.

A wrong note can be heard at 02:50. There is not cause for concern.

Upper keyb: Emu EMAX II HD
Mid: Roland JP8000
Lower: Kurzweil PC1x

Tape Machine: Revox B77 MkII"

DX5 playing Depeche Mode "It's Called a Heart"

YouTube via DX5 | February 14, 2011 |

"Quick done backtrack (Sorry folks but quite busy these weeks as for taking care of every backtrack detail), first recorded in Pro Tools, then dumped to the Reel to Reel tape.

Gear used:
Upper Keyb: Emu EMAX II HD
Mid: Emu Emax
(Sounds from my libraries, also sampled from my DX7)

Tape machine: Revox B77 MkII."

DX5 playing Pet Shop Boys "Domino Dancing"

YouTube via DX5.

"First PSB track that I cover. Everything (searching sounds, assigning to the Emax, recording the backtrack, etc) was done in half an afternoon. As I started to record late at night, I didn't rehearsal more than twice, so there are some mistakes on the lead part (JX-8P).

No sample sound from the original song. All Emax samples are from my libraries (even the orchestal Hit, I realized I have got exactly the same they used for the track).

Gear:
Roland JX-8P
Emu Emax
Kurzweil PC1x."

DX5 playing Visage "Fade to Grey" (updated w/lyrics)

YouTube via DX5 | November 13, 2010

"Updated version. The pre-recorded voice is a take I did in 2006 (late at night almost whispering to a Shure SM58). As I found it curious I decided to include this take into the video.
Also, I improved the previous DX7 take, replacing it with the JP8000.

Gear:
Upper Keyb: Roland JP8000
Mid: Roland D10
Low: Roland JX8P

Backtrack Recorded on Pro Tools.

Composed by Billy Currie, Christopher Payne and Midge Ure"

Depeche Mode Black Celebration Cover

YouTube via DX5.

"Music: DX5. Lyrics: Luckyboy (from www.dmforever.tk)

Yes. Notice that I DON'T SING. It is a pre recorded voice. Some mistakes due to the set configuration (the Roland should be below the Emax, not in L configuration).

Played over a backtape recorded by myself. Top: Emu Emax. Right hand: Roland JX8P.

Backtape recording was also done with a Yamaha DX7 and DX7IIFD, Roland D10, Reason."

DX5 playing Depeche Mode "Stories of Old"

YouTube via DX5 | October 11, 2010

"Emax power today.

Gear:
Upper and Mid: Emu Emax
Lower: Emu EMAX II HD
Right (out of screen) : Yamaha DX7 II FD.

* Sound is overcompressed due to an overloaded output from the mixer into camera preamp (it uses to compress a lot even in normal levels). Hope it doesn't disturb too much. And yes, there is a mistake at one of the last notes :)

Composed by Martin L. Gore."

Depeche Mode "Dream On"

YouTube via DX5 — April 28, 2010 —

"A track from 'Exciter'. One of my favourite albums (although lot of people refuse it).

Backtrack recorded in Pro tools with reason rewired for drums. All pads come from a Roland JP8000 (DM used this keyboard on Exciter for both recording and live).
Keyboards played live:
Roland JP8000
Kurzweil PC1x.

Composed by Martin L. Gore

Tour of the studio ! - Yamaha DX-7 Clone

YouTube via evilbandzed. Note the Hohner HS-2, a Yamaha DX-7 clone.
"evilb and zed show you their equipment :P"

Updates:
via Gwenhwyfaer in the comments:
"Er, the Hohner HS-2 is a rebadged Casio VZ1 - whilst iPD is basically FM with a 0 carrier frequency (aka waveshaping), the instrument is in no way close to being a DX7 clone."

via pat:
"Doubtless a brainfart of some kind, but (according to the net) the hohner is a Casio clone; used to work for Yamaha in the days of the DX (I own a dx5), no way they would license that stuff out."

Emu EMAX II vs Emax I (1 of 3)

YouTube via DX5

"Technical video (not cover). Just checking the differences between the EMAX II (at 39 Khz, digital filters) and the Emax I (28 Khz, analog filters) sampling the same source.

* The sampled source is Depeche Mode "Stories of Old". It was used for technical purposes only, and its lenght doesn't exceed 8 seconds. The Copyright of this record belongs to EMI Music."

Me checking my E-mu EMAX (DM keyboard)

YouTube via DX5.

Some INXS in the intro.
"This is my new E-mu EMAX. Just checking the library. I start with ARCO STRINGS original emax disk. Then, some third partner disks. Some sounds remind Depeche, others Pet Shop Boys, etc...

This sampler was used by Depeche Mode, at Music for the Masses age (later they switched to EMAX II on Violator). Below it, a Yamaha DX7II FD; so that set is exactly the same that Alan Wilder and Martin Gore played on 101 Pasadena live. (Of course, the same without the depeche samples and the midi triggering pads :) )"

Depeche Mode "Pimpf"

Played on an Emu Emax with the original Emu piano disk. I play two different piano sounds (a doubled octave one with the right hand).
*Not perfectly played, some mistakes can be heard.

Composed by Martin L Gore."

Me playing DM "Behind the Wheel" 101

YouTube via DX5

"Upper keyboard: Emu EMAX II HD
Lower: Emu Emax.

Only the crowd background was sampled from the original 101 album(a two seconds only loop).

(I sampled into the EMAXII a Roland JX-8P and a Kurzweil Pc1x for the main lead, a JP8000 for the "submarine" resonant noise, JX-8P for the mid sequence, left hand choir is a library sample)

Bactrack recorded in Pro Tools and Reason rewired. Yamaha DX7, Roland D10 and Emax I also used for the backtrack."

Me playing New Order "Blue Monday"

YouTube via DX5.

"My own "Blue Monday" view. Sounds don't come up in the same order than original, I decided to play it in a free way.

I've made it in two hours (including searching sounds, assigning sounds to the Emax, making an easy backtrack, etc).
Recorded at the first take, so there are some mistakes as always.

Above: Roland JP8000 (Lead sequenced on pro tools).
Mid: Roland D10 (drum kit sounds)
Below: E-MU Emax.(Hook's bass and choir)"
