Allinaire Korg PS3200 (PS3300 Emulation MAM RS3 Res) MS50 MS20 MS10 VC10 Vocoder SQ10 Seq SE500 Echo

video upload by Allinaire

"As a huge Korg fan I got to put together an Ensemble piece using 1978 era Korg Synths. The hero is the mighty PS3200 polyphonic synth playing homage to its big brother (and, as of 2024, soon to be re-released by Korg, the PS3300) by using the direct out of the 3200 into a MAM RS3 Resonator which recreates the famous PS3300 & 3100 modulated resonator circuit. The 3200 plays pads, base and noises.
Lead lines and extra pads via an MS20 into a VC10 Vocoder combo give a haunting breathy sound.
The SQ10 Sequencer drives the MS50 and MS20 synths for a rhythmic sequence and the MS10 with its famous pulse width modulation provides additional baselines.
Effects include the SE500 Tape Echo and the more modern Kaos Pad Mini.
All recorded on a Zoom R24 recorder.
Percussion utilises some sounds sampled from the various Korg Synths and is added in Ableton Live.

Recorded in April 2024, Wollongong courtesy of Jondent, with some additional sounds from my own original MS20 in Sydney.

The Video is mixed together bits of footage from the session but missed most of the playing and modulation action - but still it’s always nice to see some vintage Korg gear in action!

Additional notes: Some subtle detuning of the PS3200 individual notes was made possible via the Temperament Adjust mini pots. The PS3010 keyboard also provides for some interesting modulation effects via the joystick and the unique note triggering control. A Korg 3100 in the same studio verified the RS3 Resonator accuracy and the RS3 unit also is CV controllable like on the 3300. By using it with the PS3200 (which has 2 oscillators per note) it gets close to the functionality of a PS3300 but of course misses the fact that the 3300 has 3 Oscillators and 3 resonators etc. I look forward to the new PS3300FS announced by Korg at NAMM 2024."

ALLINAIRE Serge Live - Wilson Analog Delay (WAD)

video upload by Allinaire

"Live Serge Modular performance (in 3 takes) featuring the amazing Wilson Analog Delay (WAD) and Touch Activated Keyboard Sequencer (TKB).
The WAD uses the legendary 'vintage' SAD1024 bucket brigade chips and creates beautiful filtered delay's, flanging and karpus strong type effects.
The TKB is a powerful control voltage keyboard and sequencer. Very playable and flexible offering multiple cv and gate outputs to control any part of the Serge system.
Function generators are used for clocks, lfos, envelopes and oscillators in this patch which also features the Frequency Shifter, Dual Phaser and filters.

Recorded in January 2023 in Wollongong NSW (Thanks to Jondent for the use of his WAD Panel and dining table!)"

Strakt - Diagnoses

New release from supporting member, blurred.vision.

New electronic duo Strakt is a collaboration between -1 and Allinaire, two artists central to the modular synthesis resurgence in Sydney, Australia.

Their debut album Diagnoses grew organically from improvised modular synth performances and impromptu recordings, shaped with nearly a year of remote sessions and file transfers over the internet due to the pandemic.

Modular synths are notorious for producing almost too much music, making polished and cohesive modular-centric albums difficult to make and rare. Diagnoses is an exception. Every track began as a live modular synth exploration, then went through a complex progression of editing, arrangement, mixing and overdubbing, while always staying true to the original modular components.

The result is a musical journey through the landscape of modern modular synthesis, married to detailed, computer-based production. Allinaire's complex, circuit-bent beats and intriguing, filtered electrical sounds continually surprise the ears, while -1's subtle grooves and detailed arrangements draw the listener ever onward as the album progresses. Sounds evolve, travel and morph, always moving forward, always engaging.

The final, elegant touches to the album are courtesy of Taylor Deupree of 12K, a leading light in ambient music, and a talented mastering engineer.

The duo is already working on a direct-to-tape-live-in-one-take companion album to Diagnoses, while planning a small regional tour and a future vinyl release.

Allinaire Strakt SeenSound - Live Generative Video, Eurorack & Moog Minitaur

video upload by Allinaire

"Live at SeenSound / Vitalise Crosspollination gig, Petersham (Sydney) on 23rd April 2022
(Thanks to Mark Pedersen & Brigid Burke - https://seensound.com & https://vimeo.com/chailight )

Allinaire performing as 1/2 of the duo ‘Strakt’ - A live and extended performance mix of the track ‘292.12 Induced psychotic disorder, with hallucinations’ from the album ‘Diagnoses’, available on Blurred.Vision. https://www.blurred.vision

‘Strakt’ is a collaboration between Fremantle based musician and producer -1 and Sydney based Allinaire. https://www.blurred.vision/artists/st...

Allinaire is playing live audio and generating live video simultaneously via a hacked and customised Max-for-Live video patch. All the geometric video is created live in response to the audio and various modulation. Additional prepared and added video (madness head shots) includes Vector Rescanning by Allinaire using an LZX system and an Oscilloscope.
Live video mixing and additional video on the day by VJ ATMM (includes partial treated excerpts of the short ‘Forever’ by Mitch Mcglocklin which uses LIDAR scanning tech)

Audio is produced using a eurorack system including a Pittsburgh Lifeforms primary Oscillator sequenced via the Mac through an Expert Sleepers ES-9, also featuring a Make Noise Morphagene and other modules. Baseline is the Moog Minitaur. Various other sounds and percussion via Mac Ableton devices manipulated and mixed by Midi controllers Softube Console 1 Fader and the Faderfox UC4.

I've been experimenting over the years with many types of modular and hardware setups for live performance - this is a first 'proof of concept' Live set utilising a Laptop (often controversial!) with outboard dedicated gear to handle audio and live video simultaneously which maintains the ability to be creative in structure, composition and live timbre manipulation - hopefully also allowing for the happy accidents that occur when playing live, as well as the adrenaline and fear of total collapse to keep it honest :-)"

ALLINAIRE - Mandelbrot vs Buchla 259e

video upload by Allinaire

"In this piece the Mandelbrot set ‘plays’ a Buchla 259e and friends (including various Max-for-Live devices). The 259e is my favourite Buchla oscillator as it contains a wealth of tones varying from a simple sine wave to chaotic digital noise - which kind of represents what happens to the points within and around the Mandelbrot set. With a 259e you can make a ton of sounds ranging from pure and harmonic, melodic to percussive, so it is perfect for this experiment.

OK, so this is the first of my explorations into the ‘sound’ of the Mandelbrot set. I’ve been thinking about and working on the idea of ‘sound and fractals’ & order and chaos for some time now. Some of my earlier work is based on these ideas and I intend to release more material exploring the many aspects of these fascinating mathematical constructs and the relationship to sound and rhythm.

This first track and video is relatively simple – I basically look at various points, being real and imaginary numbers, in and around the Mandelbrot set. Depending on where a point starts there is a pattern, or orbit, related to the formula z = z2 + c where ‘c’ is the point of examination. The equation is repeated, and a pattern emerges which you can see by the lines emerging from each point. If the pattern stays within the black area then it is said to be part of the Mandelbrot set and tends to produce a pure or harmonic set of tones. Stable orbiting patterns within the set can also have different periods from 2, 3, 4, 5 and so on, as you can see in the video, these points derive from the ‘bulbs’ off the main set. These periods create the harmonic series tones. Points that are outside of the Mandelbrot set quicky become noisy and chaotic and disappear to infinity.

For this sonic experiment the movement of the original point ‘c’ and the patterns each point creates forms the origin of the notes and gates. The starting point being the fundamental frequency, and the patterns with stable orbits become harmonic ‘chords’. These are converted to midi note data. Changes in the position of the point are registered as a midi note on and off which generates gates and triggers used for the percussive tones. I convert the midi data to cv (control voltages) to drive the Buchla modular synthesiser as well as using the midi within various Max devices. The sounds on the video are derived wholly from the midi / cv data created by the movement of the original point on the Mandelbrot, there is nothing added. The ‘artistic’ aspect of the piece is derived from where I choose to sweep the points and the sounds and percussion allocated to the midi / cv data. I have more in the works exploring Mandelbrot and Fractals! I want to acknowledge that I’m certainly not the first person to do this. There are many many examples to be found on-line and in some instruments. My version is based on this original concept and application code by CodeParade found here:"

"Try it out now! https://codeparade.itch.io/fractal-so... Making music and sound effects directly from common fractals was an idea I though of one night, so I just had to try it out to see what it would be like. The results were really interesting and actually helped me understand even more about fractals and chaos.

ALLINAIRE - Break Snake Live - Poly Beebo & Faderfox UC4

video by Allinaire

"MITL Live set from the Oscillosaurus Ranch at Paterson, NSW in June 2021.
My current Live rig of Norns, ARC & Faderbank 16 has been supplemented by the excellent Poly Beebo Pedal. This incredible device allows you to build your own patches and for the this set I'm using the Resonator and Granular effects (thx to Mutable Instruments code) on Channel 1 & 2 as a synth source - both controlled via a FADERFOX UC4. A seperate effects chain utilises channels 3 & 4. Its a very versatile pedal made right here in Australia - Highly recommended! Also featuring 1010 BlueBox as a mixer, effects rig and stem player for various sounds mainly controlled via a Xone K2 controller.
Norns / ARC has 4 track playback and granular effects on Drums, Bass, Pads and atmospheric tones.
This set is a Live version of my Breakcore drum inspired 'Break Snake' track."

ALLINAIRE Live - Good Space Block Party (Monome Norns + ARC + Zoia + Bluebox)

video by Allinaire

"Reconstructed Live Video from the Good Space Block Party (29th May 2021, The Rocks, Sydney). Using Monome Norns with ARC controller & 16n Faderbank giving Granular control of several sound sources.
1010 Bluebox is used as the mixer and is streaming field recordings of ocean waves, wind, bells, sticks and other assorted noises being processed via Empress Effects ZOIA through a custom Granular and Ring Mod patch and Bluebox's own effects and filters - using a Zone K2 Midi Controller fully mapped to Bluebox and ZOIA.

The track is an extended, modified and live version of my track 'Nrem REM' from the Album 'Heiro' available on Bandcamp: https://allinaire.bandcamp.com/album/...

Note: This video is reconstructed from 2 takes. About half way through the live set on the night the 1010 Bluebox froze and became unresponsive (most likely due to a power issue - working with Aaron of 1010 now to sort out the issue) meaning all the mixing, half the field recording and audio sources with all internal effects, and the effect send to Zoia were unavailable. Rather than stop completely I was forced to carry on with what was still working which changed the final outcome completely. Obviously very disapointing but it just shows that gear failures can happen anytime - I'll need to reconsider some gear choices and power sources due to this issue.

For the purposes of completeness I decided to use an earlier live rehearsal recording to add back the 'missing' pieces by splicing it in about half way - so the video is not fully 'live' in that regard. The first half has also been edited in a couple of places to make this a shorter video. I've tried to match the video to the correct audio but a couple of inconsistencies may be evident.

I'd like to thank VJ 'ATTM' for the excellent Live video projection and live video feed and the amazing Luke Snarl for facilitating this part of the Good Space event and running the sound. Thanks to Good Space for hosting the event.

Video footage of the night by Dee plus some taken from the Live Stream."

Allinaire Live: Monome Norns/Fates + ARC. Granular Synthesis. New Atlantis

video by Allinaire

"Monome Norns / Fates controlled by ARC and Faderbank. Live performance at 'New Atlantis, Artists Edition' at the Io Myer Theatre at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. Recorded 6th March 2021.
Testing the Quadraphonic sound stage at the theatre, this event featured several NSW modular and sound artists.
Huge thanks to Adam Hulbert of UNSW and New Sound Waves for organising and facilitating the event.
Video Synthesis and projection mapping onto the 4 screen panels by Adam Hulbert and Simon Trevaks (with Luke S Dearnley operating Vidiot during my set).
Quadraphonc sound in the Theatre but only stereo on this video - still some good sound panning and movement best heard on quality headphones or speakers.
Norns / Fates features several reels of material including field recordings of underwater audio from the Great Barrier reef off Carins QLD, percussion extracts from my Asalt studio piece & various Norns apps pieces and percussion.
Using Norns App ASH/ ANGL the ARC controls the pitch and speed in a high precision granular manner and Faderbank adjusts various other parameters.
4 Granular 'tape heads' are available concurrently and I swap out 'sound reels' during the performance.
The performance is basically made 'on the fly', by ear, by granularising the sounds into tiny pieces and adjusting parametaers to mix, smear, pan and resize & overlap grains.
Picked up some radio interference towards the end as well!
Thanks for watching."

MONOME Norns/fates + ARC + 16n Faderbank: Study 001

Allinaire

"Monome Norns/Fates controlled by ARC & 16n Faderbank. Performed Live.
ARC controls 4 virtual 'Tape' heads in Fates ASH app. The ARC controls position, speed, direction & pitch in very high resolution increments.
The 16n Faderbank is midi mapped to the parameters in ASH to control the number of grains, grain size, grain spread for each tape head and a master reverb.
All sounds and loops from Fates - no external effects or processing. The output is recoded back into Fates via the Record App running simultaneously.
The 4 loops were made prior on other fates apps and recorded via Fates then loaded into ASH."

Erica Syntrx vs EMS VSC3 The Putney (Part Two)

Allinaire

"Part 2 of the Comparison demos between the Erica Synths Syntrx and the EMS Synthi models (Synthi AKS and VCS3 - The Putney).
The video highlights some obvious differences between the two including the pin Matrix and controls. There is a simple square wave, pulse width, filter and reverb test then we get into some experimental 'Noisy' patches to compare the sound of the two. This is not a musical comparison but aims to compare Sound and Timbre of the two synths based on a few patches.
Decent headphones or speakers are recommended.
Part 1 looked at a comparison with the Synthi AKS - you can watch that here: [posted here]

Thanks to Djjondent for co-hosting the comparison. Check out his excellent blog here: https://djjondent.blogspot.com"

Erica Syntrx vs Synthi AKS (Part One)

Allinaire

"Part One of the shootout between the Erica Synths Syntrx and an original Synthi AKS. Simple patches are compared highlighting a single Oscillator, FM, RingMod, Filter, Reverb & Noise. This video simply compares Sound and Timbre, not the functionality, extras or differences in the Matrix implementation.
(Part Two will look at a Putney VCS3 and some more complex patches).
Thanks to Djjondent for co-hosting the comparison. Check out his excellent blog here: https://djjondent.blogspot.com"
