Arturia Minibrute 2 | Little Monster

Published on Sep 3, 2019 Alex Ball

"Arturia kindly sent me a Minibrute 2 and so I made a track with it.

As I’m sure you know, the MiniBrute 2 came out last year and is the successor to the original MiniBrute (2012) with both being modern analogue monosynths with some nice features.

Oscillator 1 has mixable sawtooth with ultrasaw, square wave with pulse width, triangle with metalizer and noise.

Oscillator 2 is simpler with sine, saw and square. It can also run as an LFO.

There is a great sounding resonant Steiner-Parker multimode filter with low pass, high pass, band pass and notch modes. It can self-oscillate.

There’s two dedicated LFOs that can be sync’d or free running.

There’s two envelopes (ADSR and AR) and the latter can loop.

There’s “brute factor” which is an on board overdrive that can get quite extreme (in a good way).

There’s a pitch wheel, mod wheel, aftertouch, an arpeggiator, a sequencer, USB and Midi in and out.

There’s also a comprehensive patch bay that really opens things out and also allows the MiniBrute to connect to Eurorack rigs. In fact there is a whole RackBrute that the MiniBrute can bolt onto via connections on its side panels.

The test for me was “Can I get up and running quickly and get some musical results” and the answer was “absolutely”. I patched in a sync’d bass sound and setup the envelopes and filter and it sounded great. I made a bunch of drum sounds and effects and sampled them for a rhythm track. I also made a couple of lead sounds that you hear in the track and everything sounded really good.

To give a balanced view I’ll list a couple of small niggles. Firstly, I’m not a fan of two octave keyboards, although the Minibrute is designed to be small of course – the clue is in the name!

Secondly the build quality is pretty solid, but the sliders felt a little plasticy (which they are of course) but by contrast the potentiometers were smooth and robust.

Whilst the above is nit-picking really and not really to do with the sound, the one real issue I found was that the tuning would drift and need nudging at fairly regular intervals. I’m not sure if that’s just my unit or that it needs some wearing in or whether they all drift, so let me know if you’ve found the same.

But overall, as an affordable true analogue synth with some instant features and some much deeper ones, I think the Minibrute 2 is a very cool and convenient product that casts a wide net in terms of its potential end users."

Published on Jun 19, 2019 yusynthman

yusynthman aka Yves Usson is the man behind yusynth.net DIY & Arturia's Minibrute line of synths.

"During the recent SynthFest France 2019 in Nantes I had the great joy and honour to demonstrate my rare PPG-100 modular synthesizer to Johannes Schmoelling (Tangerine Dream 1978-1982, Loom) and Kurt Ader (musician and sound-designer at KApro). It was an exhilarating moment for me to demo TD like sequences before a former member of Tangerine Dream... I felt like in heaven ! This videao was shot by Nicolas Jalabert."

Description for the third video:
"During the Synthfest Fest France in France (june 7th to 9th 2019) I exhibited a very rare PPG-100 analog modular synthesizer (something like 10 units built in 1974). The keyboard is played by Tony Quenneville and the video was shot by Tarek Lule. On some motion of the camera you may catch a glimpses of an Emulator 2, a CMI Faitlight, ARP 2500 and ARP 2600 modulars, an 8 voices Schmitt and Synclavier controller that were also on display and test in the same room.

4 Monosynths Under $1000 | Reverb

Published on Apr 4, 2019 Reverb

"If you're looking for synth bass or lead tones, you can't go wrong with a monosynth.

Shorthand for monophonic synthesizer, monosynths will allow you to play only one note at a time. But they promise a rich, versatile array of tones. If however you're looking to play chords, you'll need a polysynth. (Not sure what you want? Take a look at this previous article on monosynths vs. polysynths that can help you make that decision.)

In our video above, Justin DeLay shows off the features and sounds of four different monosynths available on Reverb for less than $1,000 USD, starting from a few hundred dollars:

Korg Monologue: Starting at $199 used.
Arturia MiniBrute 2: Staring at $499 used.
Korg ARP Odyssey: Starting at $500 used.
Moog Grandmother: Starting at $820 used."

Arturia Minibrute 2 & Korg SQ-1 'Random + Random' (useage demo)

Published on Jan 7, 2019 DreamsOfWires

"This was just a test. Since the Minibrute 2's second VCO is available on the patch bay, I thought I'd try syncing the SQ-1 to the Brute and using it to control VCO2's pitch, with the synth's arpeggiator controlling VCO1. Both the sequencer and the arpeggiator are in random mode, and are sending two separate groups of selected notes randomly to each of the Minibrute's oscillators.

Recorded using AUM on an iPhone with EOS2 for reverb. Cameras: LUMIX GH4 and GX7.

YuSynth VCS3 Filter in Eurorack Format

Published on Dec 18, 2018 Randy Piscione

"This is a demo of a Eurorack version of the YuSynth VCS3 diode voltage controlled filter (VCF). It's a bit long, 6 minutes, but I tried to cover most of what it would do. There's no talking! I don't have a VCS3 to compare this too so I'm not sure if it really sounds like it's namesake filter, but it's still cool either way.

I start off with the usual frequency and resonance demo with one VCO input. At 2:00, another VCO is added. Around 3:00, some frequency modulation, 3:30, resonance modulation, at 4:30, both modulations and we see what it does with something closer to audio rates for modulation.

Other modules featured off-stage include a PM Foundations Synthola Sequencer and two Frequency Central Waverrunner LFOs."

YuSynth aka Yves Usson is the designer of the MiniBrute which led to the MicroBrute and MatrixBrute. He is know for his DIY work prior to Arturia, mainly in the 5U format.

Minibrute 2 & Modular (Arturia & AJH Synth eurorack) DreamsOfWires

Published on Dec 9, 2018 DreamsOfWires

"My first session using the Minibrute 2 with my Eurorack modular system, just a simple 70's-inspired thing. This is not an instructional video, just a musical session I enjoyed and decided to share. The Minibrute's sequencer is the backbone of the performance, with the AJH MiniMod modules providing additional sounds. Turn on subtitles for a few snippets of patch info. List of gear and effects used below.

Rebach CATCH series with arpregiator from Arturia Minibrute 2

Published on Nov 22, 2018 Dziam Bass

"Hi Folks!!!
I have a little bit of this blue equipment today and more precisely modules from ReBach.
I connected them today to the arpregiator with Arturia Minibrute 2, I used here VCO-A VCF-A, ADSR-A and SMP all from the latest CATCH series from Rebach.
VCO-A sound with VCF-A filter gives really great, smooth vintage character. I also used the Black Hole DSP reverb from Erica Synths for beautiful space. It behaves very nicely in the lower bands but also in the middle is really nice.
The prices are also attractive for only 95 EUR each module, so check these modules and have them in your system."
