Buchla 252e + BugBrand

video upload by Precarious333 Music

"Just got my 252e back after repair. Running through some tests to refamiliarize myself with the features. This is just a simple test with 252e sequencing 4 voices. Two are using the VCOs from Buchla 259e Twisted Waveform Generator with one through Vedic Scapes 13700 band pass filter. Then there is a kick from Bugbrand DRM2 and a drone into glitchy high hat using Bugbrand Synth Voice modules. Used lots of off-grid timing on 252e to make it a bit wonky.

The bass is 259e principal oscillator with RED cells coming from the 8 and 16 rings. The band pass voice is 259e modulation oscillator sequenced from the GREEN cells of the 6, 8, and 16 ring so some triplets in there from 6. Kick is BLUE cells from the 16 ring. High hat is ratcheted by the subdivided pulses from rings 8 and 16. Using a mixer to mute/unmute off screen to the left.

Recorded as 2 tracks into Ableton Live. Compression and FXs added in post."

Boolean Logic Latched - Patch 02

video upload by

Patch 01 here

"Using only a single clock input Boolean Logic Latched by Magnetic Freak is able to create a plethora of rhythmic patterns by combining divisions of that clock through logic gates. In this instance the patterns drive a kick, snare, 3 static pitch VCOs, and a bass boost. An entire arrangement of elements driven by complimentary patterns derived from a simple clock.

Clock: Buchla 246 Sequential Voltage Source
Kick: Bugbrand DRM2 Analogue Drum Voice
Snare: 1979 Dual Algorithmic Oscillator (DAO)
Synth Voices 1-3: Northern Light Modular 8-bit Synth Voice (h8B)
(with Buchla 291 VCF layered with Voice 1)
Bass: Bugbrand DRM2 amp modulation

Recorded as 2 tracks into Ableton Live. Compression, reverb, and panning added in post."

Boolean Logic Latched - Patch 01 BugBrand DRM2 Drums

video upload by Precarious333 Music

"Magnetic Freak's Boolean Logic Latched is a Buchla format module featuring a clock divider and 7 logic circuits with switchable mode functionality and unique latching capabilities. Logic is hard to find in Buchla land, and as a fan I'm happy to announce its arrival. This simple patch barely scratches the surface of BLL's potential. It's more an introduction to the most basic uses of logic gates. But make no mistake, Boolean Logic Latched will be at the center of every patch I make from this point on. Intended as a companion module to Magnetic Freak's Gaussian I will endeavor to explore that companionship in videos to come. Time is short but the potentials are endless. Thus is life.

In this patch I'm using a clock from Buchla 246 into BLL's clock divider, then combining different divisions to trigger a kick/snare duo created by two of BugBrand's fantastic DRM2 analog drum voices. Simple origins lead to complex results. Everything you hear stems from that single clock input. I'm only making use of 3 of BLL's 7 logic circuits, none of its latching gates, so just a fraction of its capabilities.

Recorded as 2 tracks into Ableton Live. Compression and effects added in post."

Pic & details via Noisebug

'This is clearly the companion module of the Gaussian to generate rhythmic patterns and much more. It can nevertheless be used alone to build up complex IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) rhythmic patterns from a single ticking clock. Two stages of Boolean logic operators are cascaded allowing all kinds of operations between the incoming signals.

The latching function let you use a dedicated clock to latch the status of all gates on the arrival of a trigger signal up to the new one (or using the push button). It could be used to re-synchronises random signals. This module is fully analog and can work up to audio rates with no latency.

These modules are only produced in very small batches for connoisseurs."

BugBrand MonoMeter & News

BugBrand

"I've been meaning to make use of this little meter for years..
First try with a prototype.
Camera mic!"

And the news via the BugBrand mailing list:

"After a year of slow tinkering (/procrastinating) the new website finally launched a few weeks back.
The new one is nice & clean, I think - a good deal lighter in appearance than the old, with a good deal of tidying up & info adding.

Go check here: www.bugbrand.co.uk

Fingers crossed all the online ordering works smoothly - do please email if you encounter any issues.

One aspect in all of this was changing the webhosting - this seems to have caused a few issues with email, in particular some replies from me going missing, especially with attachments such as PDF invoices. This is frustrating!

I always try to stay on top of email replies, so if things suddenly go quiet or you don't hear back from me then you can always give me a nudge using my bugbrand AT gmail com email address.

So, I've been kind of storing up a few new releases as I didn't want to add them to the old site. Here we go!
[Click the title links!]

***PEQ2***
I've reimagined the old parametric so that we have a regular production EQ device - initial stock is available online!
It remains purely manual in control - I spent a lot of time trying out Voltage Control approaches, but nothing stuck as yet, and there's a lot to be said for keeping things simple! This is great for transforming the audio spectrum of signals - and there might even be a complementary 2FW mono something to pair with it... prototyping at the moment.

***Expanded COFilter***
The (Active) Expander for the current CrossOverFilter should now be in semi-regular production. The above links to the standalone combo package but I can also provide it as a module with new 5FW case - just email to discuss. A new batch is on the bench but there are two completed units ready & in the online store.

***Multiplier Module***
A new polarizing VCA module (1FW) for the Blues. I've still got a few made from the 1st batch with more to follow shortly.
(In general I have regular stock of most current Blue designs - most ready built on the shelf - always email order only so do shout!)

***PT Delay Slight Seconds***
The latest batch of PT Delay standalones had a few minor panel imperfections - small scratches or blemishes - so they've been marked down slightly in price.

***Banana Cables***
I just restocked & added a further sample pack of 4 x 50cm cables - regularly available!

Next up is continued catching up - restocking items like the SComp & DRM2, keeping the modular line ticking over, making up systems, ongoing bubbling prototype work...And remembering too to sometimes step away from work!
Spinning always.

Best autumnal wishes,
Tom"

New BugBrand Modules

Note the following is from the BugBrand email list so it's a bit less formal.

"The news front has been quiet this winter - it has felt like a time for contemplation, catching & tidying up - but now Spring is approaching, always so welcome, and ideas can start to stretch & emerge.

First, there are a few new modules coming out - slowly for now, with little push/promo - systems keep on growing around the world:
Quadrature Sine - an updated version of the old pre-2013, a pure oscillator/LFO producing Sine & Cosine
Matrix - 6 inputs to 4 outputs - for CV or audio
DC Mixer - a nice little utility for signal mixing (+ inversion & offset)

Something that has been bubbling in my mind for some time (and helped along through discussions with my ever wonderful assistant, Jasmine) - a mixture of letting go, opening up, setting up experiments, planting seeds. I've long enjoyed the mix of technical (system design, studio routing) balanced against the more creative (playing the audio clay of a system), but find I rarely get enough time to dive deep into play & recording, along with wonderings on how I can involve others.

Slowly, slowly I wish to get people in to the studio to play & experiment - to see how people use the machines, to feel around how best to explain the technical sides, to be open to the many sounds which arise. Now we observe the early steps - the first visitor came in yesterday and left somewhat hypnotised! I do not know what might arise and that is exciting. So I plant this seed of an idea with few preconceptions - I want to explore it gradually & look forward to the conversations & meetings that might occur through it. The logistics are TBC - the approach is open.

In other bits of news:
Next month, 21st March, Machina Bristronica (organised by Elevator Sound) is happening again in Bristol. A massive gathering of audio machines! I think I will be positioned next to old friend & fellow Bristol synthesist/designer George Hearn & his wonderful UDO polysynth - finally I will get to try it!
http://machinabristronica.uk/
Here's a little Youtube recording from last week: [Posted here]
On the stock & production front - the Corona virus is definitely having something of an impact & we just have to roll with it. Board production is very slow at the moment - no massive problem at present, but we'll have to see how it all goes.

Currently - visit the online shop:
The last DRM2 for now is online! I'll aim to do another board run soon, but could take some months..
StereoCompress - another batch is being made right now so should be out within 2 weeks
SynthVoices & other modular setups are somewhat limited due to waiting on Dual Envelope & Dual Filter production - but lots of other modules ready on the shelf & I can always do frames etc.
I think that covers most of the news for now!

Best wishes to all!
Tom"
