Tonal Destruction - Dirty Laundry by After Later Audio

video upload by Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video resident expert Nick Bigelow gives us a thorough demonstration and tutorial of the After Later Audio Dirty Laundry.

Dirty Laundry is a destructive harmonic generator. The FOLD side can function as a standard Buchla-inspired wave folder but then extend into chaos when you engage the “pre-fold” PRESS section. The Press section creates all kinds of initial harmonics that really give the Fold section something to sink its teeth into. This results in a nice range of controlled harmonics from simple fold activity to anarchy.

The Press and Fold sections can function either as two parallel sections or as single serial unit. There are crossfaders between the sections and at the end of chain to help with blending between these two distinct sections. In development I mainly use it as a serial unit as I think it’s most fun that way. But I found the need to control the mixes to get what I was after, so I added some extra patch points to make it parallel capable.

The module will work well with all waveforms (speech is fun) but I often stick with sine and triangle waves as I find them the most pleasing starting point. While most folders won’t work well with square waves, the RES/DRIVE circuit will cause some rippling and make the FOLD much more interesting.

EZBOT

"In this video I take my new Octatrack MK2 Anniversary edition for a spin with my Digitakt and Digitone. Again using the "remixer" setup with my Octatrack. The music feels somber to me, perhaps it's just that time of the year here in Seattle when the gloom gets in your room."

Korg Introduces the opsix "Altered FM" Synthesizer

Own FM with Korg’s opsix Altered FM Synthesizer

Update: Kraft Musik video added to the playlist below.

The KORG opsix is here. It appears KORG went with the smaller Wavestate-like body. You might remember the full size keyboard teasers from previous posts. That said, details:

"The legendary sound of FM synthesis had graced hundreds of albums, from its introduction in the 80’s to today. Korg’s opsix puts the power of expanded six-operator FM synthesis in your hands, with instant on-panel controls that help you create custom FM sounds with unparalleled ease.

'Altered FM' takes you light years beyond classic FM with 32 voices of polyphony, five modulation types, a user algorithm mode, multiple filter models 1 “logue”-style 16-step note and motion sequencing, effects for days, a 12-point modulation matrix, and much more."

User videos:

Use the player controls at the bottom left of the player once started to skip around. Some are long.
See the dealer links in the playlist below and the banners on the right for availability.

Playlist:
1. KORG opsix Altered FM Synthesizer - First Look! with Tom Butcher of Patchwerks Seattle - video by Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT)
2. KORG OPSIX - All Playing, No Talking - Kraft Music
3. Korg opsix Sound Demo (no talking) - Bonedo Synthesizers
4. Korg OPSIX Review, tutorial and 10 patch tips // All 250 Presets played - loopop
5. Korg OPsix FM synthesizer // Hands-on Easy to Use FM Synth! - BoBeats
6. Korg Opsix Sound Design - Kinda Tutorial - True Cuckoo

"Rethink everything you know about FM synthesis.

The opsix represents a new and expansive reimagination of classic digital synthesis. Much like Korg did when bringing wave sequencing back in a more powerful, more musical, and more immediately accessible way with wavestate, so was the approach to FM sound generation of the opsix, resulting in another incredibly flexible and unique synth.

Tip Top Audio Z5000 Sound Demo and Tutorial

Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video resident expert Matthew Piecora (aka EZBOT) teaches us how to use the Tip Top Audio Z5000 Multi Effects eurorack module. After the short tutorial Matthew demonstrates all the patches in the robust FX bank in the Z5000 with the Noise Engineering Loquelic Iteritas (complex oscillator) and the WMD Javelin (EG + VCA).

Back in 2008, the original Z5000 was not only the world’s first Eurorack DSP effects module but also the first Tiptop Audio module released. It brought voltage controlled digital effects to Eurorack for the first time and the Z5000 was eventually replaced by the Z-DSP open source platform. Now, years later with over a decade of experience developing audio effects for Eurorack signals we are introducing a totally new version of the Z5000: a compact stereo 8HP multi effect with voltage controlled parameters, VC analog clock generator driving the DSP chip and 24 of our creme de la creme reverbs, delays, modulation, harmonization and pitch modulated effects. A number of programs in the Z5000 combine more than one effect, in series or parallel, that represent studio techniques from the early days till modern times often leaning toward the more experimental side.

Livecoding the Elektron Analog 4MKII with ORCΛ

EZBOT

I love the Analog 4MKII. It sounds amazing and has awesome performance features. It works works wonderfully with ORCA despite it only having 4 tracks to work with. Fortunately multi-mapping is relatively easy to do and allows you to play drums and in this example chords as well.

Ambient Melodies ~ 32 Channel Shift Register in ORCΛ

EZBOT

"I spent a few days tinkering in ORCA until I felt I had perfected the shift register with help from Echophon. This is an ambient piece using four eight channel shift-registers. Each shift register stack is controlling a value: NOTE, OCTAVE, VELOCITY, and GATE LENGTH.

From Hundredrabbits:
Orca is an esoteric programming language designed to quickly create procedural sequencers, in which every letter of the alphabet is an operation, where lowercase letters operate on bang, uppercase letters operate each frame.

This application is not a synthesizer, but a flexible livecoding environment capable of sending MIDI, OSC & UDP to your audio/visual interfaces, like Ableton, Renoise, VCV Rack or SuperCollider.

Roland SP-404A as a send FX on the Elektron Octatrack (tutorial)

Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video resident expert Nick Bigelow of Patchwerks teaches us how to use the Roland SP-404A as a send FX for the Elektron Octatrack.

From Roland: "Designed for live use, the SP-404A Linear Wave Sampler expands the sounds of the Roland AIRA TR-8 Rhythm Performer for a powerful combination of sample and percussive synthesis. The fast, hands-on approach of the acclaimed SP-series performance samplers is a perfect fit for the impressive rhythmic effects and iconic step-sequencer of the Roland AIRA TR-8.

All of the functions and features of the popular SP-404SX are contained in the SP-404A, including its distinctive 16-bit linear sampling, 29 onboard DSP effects, smooth FX switching, and 12 professional performance pads. Plus, a new library of sounds curated by sample-industry leader Loopmasters are provided via the included SD card.

Whether used standalone or controlled by the TR-8, the SP-404A makes for an intuitive and inspiring addition to the AIRA range of performance instruments for DJs, musicians, and producers."

Order SP-404A here: https://bit.ly/roland_sp404a

From Elektron: "The Octatrack MKII brings enormous sample processing ability into a machine designed for live performance. It redefines how you transform your sounds, as well as how you interact and play with them. It lets you do things that were previously impossible with a single instrument.

Natural born performer
Record samples in real time. Add live time-stretching and pitch-shifting. Use the sequencer to control both internal sounds and external MIDI gear. The Octatrack MKII can also be treated as a small mixing desk for your whole setup. The immediate control makes all the difference.

Audio mutation
The crossfader adds immense depth to your sound. First, choose how you want it to affect your samples. Then nudge the crossfader gently for the most subtle and natural-sounding changes – or knock it back and forth like you’re scratching for rapid and extreme enhancements."
