Sampling a Juno-106 into the Prophet X

video upload by Espen Kraft

"Sampling synths has been done since the dawn of samplers. Sometimes it's done to get new timbres, textures or increased polyphony. Or it's done to assemble a lot of sounds for a live gig. Whatever reason, sampling is a highly creative process than can yield great results."

Roland MSQ-700 | the most quirky and creative sequencer ever made

video upload by Espen Kraft

"The Roland MSQ-700 Midi sequencer has a very quirky quantization. Set the quantize to 16ths or 8ths and what comes out is chopped, moved around and definitely not what you'd expect. And that is a beautiful way of creating something new. I love this about the MSQ-700. Primitive AI quantize.

Howard Jones used the MSQ-700 for a lot of his album "Dream Into Action" and you can check out this interview here for more of his thoughts: https://www.muzines.co.uk/articles/sy..."

Yamaha QX1 & QX3 sequencers | What are the differences?

video upload by Espen Kraft

"Yamaha QX1 from 1984 and the QX3 from 1987. Both flagship midi sequencers of the 80s. Very advanced and very cumbersome to use, unless you put in the work and get muscle memory going.
Check out my dedicated videos about these here:"

Alesis MMT-8 recreated - The impossible dream? Retrokits RK-008 sequencer demo

video upload by Espen Kraft

"The iconic Alesis MMT-8 was the first midi sequencer for many people in the late 80s. A superb sequencer, very easy to use and a fantastic piece of kit. Now Retrokits has made a smaller, yet very inspired MMT-8 recreation, which captures much of the original magic."

The Roland Juno-106 | Quirks and features you probably don't know about

video upload by Espen Kraft

"The Roland Juno-106 synthesizer can do a lot more than you think. It can use 3 oscillators per voice if you want it to. You can use negative filter envelopes and even use it as a mono synth. And more. I go through some of the more unknown quirks and features. Video tutorial."

Sequential Prophet X | A masterpiece, but very underrated

video upload by Espen Kraft

"With 2 sample instruments (engines), 2 extra synth oscillators and analog SSM-style filters & amps, the Prophet X has a lot going for it. I was looking for one keyboard to rule them all. All my custom samples inside. Works great!
As I have to have a sample engine (instrument) to be able to gather most of the sounds I need for alive gig, some synths like the Oberheim OB-X8, 3rd Wave or similar wouldn't be the right choice. I thought about the Waldorf Quantum, but it doesn't have the easy of use and I really dislike touch screen setups, the same way I dislike smartphones and iPads. For the same reason. I want buttons and knobs, also when programming."

Sonicware LIVEN Lofi-12 & Korg DSS-1| David Vs Goliath?

video upload by Espen Kraft

"Looking for a modern sampler/sequencer that can be a mix of old 12-bit Akai samplers and the Casio RZ1, while being able to do a lot more, the LIVEN LoFi-12 might be a good choice.
It does have that Casio RZ-1 sound (and swing) though, so based on that alone it's great."

Akai S900 real time filter cut-off with the mod wheel | It's quite possible

video upload by Espen Kraft

"This headline might seem trivial to anyone not familiar with the Akai S900, but as the sampler has no MIDI sysex capabilities, nor MIDI CC capabilities, for real time parameter control (except MIDI CC#01for the mod wheel), being able to do this is no small thing. And it's the Mod wheel and CC#01 we're interested in here.

By using the MIDI Solutions "Velocity Converter" box we can use the S900's ability to control the filter over MIDI velocity, but instead of using the keys harder or softer, we tie the mod wheel and CC#01, to velocity instead, thus we can use the mod wheel to set the filter cutoff.

Check out the Velocity Converter here: https://midisolutions.com/prodvel.htm"

Prophet X and SampleRobot - incredibly fast and easy way to make a library of sounds | Live rig Pt.1

video upload by Espen Kraft

"A fast and efficient way of recording your hardware or software synths for a sample library is to use a program called SampleRobot. Using that will definitely speed up the process in many ways. I've been asked about this program many times and as I need to get lots of samples into the Prophet X, I decided to try it.
In this video I go through how I'll use this program to get a 4 velocity layered Electric Piano from my TX802 into the Prophet X, WITHOUT spending countless hours doing it manually.

In nine out of ten times, It is I who contact different manufacturers to check out their products. So also in this case. I've been asked about this program many times, as I do make sample libraries for a living, and with my new Prophet X installed I felt it was time to check this program out once and for all, so I contacted the company. My thoughts and conclusions are never bought, influenced nor corrupted, by the manufacturers.

Check out SampleRobot here: https://www.samplerobot.com"

Build an epic dreamy soundtrack with Yamaha TX816 and Roland Jupiter-8

video upload by Espen Kraft

"The Yamaha TX816 FM module paired with a Roland Jupiter-8 in random arpeggio mode was a perfect match for my track "Dreams" as a title track for my new album, of the same name.
With 8 DX7 cards, the TX816 is a monster when it comes to stacking up FM sounds.

MIDI Solutions ROUTER | Extremely handy!

video upload by Espen Kraft

"Select, filter and rechannel MIDI messages. The MIDI Solutions Router is a fast, easy and effective way of getting a lot of things done. I use it to setup synths as master keyboards with MIDI ranges, outputs and pitch bends. On older MIDI synths with constant Omni ON, this is a fantastic box."

Yamaha DX9 Vs DX7s comparison | How much difference is there really?

video upload by Espen Kraft

"Unlike all the other 4-operator FM synths from Yamaha, from the 80s, the DX9 IS really a DX7, it's just a 4-operator DX7. It even saves its patches in a DX7 format and no patches from the DX9 will load up on the other 4-operator FX synths without converting.

What I was interested in was how DX9 patches sounds on a DX7, or vice versa. I deliberately chose the last DX7 Yamaha made, the DX7s, to test this. The 1987 DX7s has better converters (but still a mono output) than the 1983 DX9.

How to make a Miami Vice inspired high speed, arpeggiated synth bass driven track

video upload by Espen Kraft

"Using the Roland Jupiter-8 to create a Jan Hammer, Miami Vice-inspired bass driven arpeggio part for my album Dreams. By layering a percussive part, with a slow attack string sound, it creates texture the momentum. All sounds in the track comes from the Jupiter-8 classic analog synth.

Album is out on all streaming platforms and Bandcamp.

2 Prophet VS's | Cool things you can do

video upload by Espen Kraft
