Shifting Scales

Published on Apr 16, 2019 Intellijel

"Scales is an 8hp dual-channel note quantizer and step sequencer. Fundamentally, it takes an input voltage, quantizes it to notes in a user-defined scale, and sends that quantized voltage to an output, where you can use it as a melodic pitch source for oscillators or any other module that expects to see discreet note values at its input.

Scales goes far beyond the fundamental, allowing you unprecedented control of the pitches and intervals hiding inside your control voltages; turn LFO’s into arpeggiators; random voltages into harmonic counterpoint; and unquantized external CV sequencers into chromatically tuned note sequencers.

Quantization can be locked to an incoming trigger. There are a number of trigger output options as well, ranging from no triggering (good for pitch shifting drones); through triggers that sync with either of the two outputs (or both); to a trigger or gate transmitted in sync with one sent to the module’s TRIG input."

Rubicon & Dixie FM Routing With Planar

Published on May 8, 2019 Intellijel

"Planar is a fantastic tool for routing modulation. In this example Rubicon and Dixie are cross modulated by feeding the A and C inputs with FM modulation being sent from the B and D outputs. This means that quadrant B modulates the Dixe's FM1 input with Rubicon, D modulates the TZFM of Rubicon with Dixie, and the other quadrants fade out the modulation.

A sequence from Scales is sending a melody to Dixie, which is also clocking Steppy, and Steppy's OUT A is providing the TRIG in to clock the Quantizer.

#intellijel, #eurorack, #modular, #synthesizer

Planar's X and Y outputs are controlling Scales Pitch inputs, so with the XY button off, no new notes are quantized for Rubicon. With it active, new notes are sent to Rubicon and things become more chaotic."

Planar FM Indexing

Published on May 2, 2019 Intellijel

"Scales and Planar are a ton of fun together, and with them in a palette case it leaves enough room for 2 Dixies, a µVCA and µVCF. In this patch we're using Planar as an FM Index for the 2 Dixies with µVCF self oscillating as the modulation source.

Scales is playing a sequence, and the different trigger modes have a big impact on how things sound. All these factors combine to make this patch lots of fun to play!"

New intellijel Tete Expander for the Tetrapad

Published on Dec 11, 2019 Intellijel

"Tête is the long awaited and highly anticipated expander for the Tetrapad. Tête takes control of Tetrapad’s mode selection and operating functions, allowing Tetrapad to do what it does best — act as a control surface, which it does both for controlling external modules and for interfacing with the advanced processing power within Tête.

Tête + Tetrapad operates in one of three different modes—

Voltages
Up to 16 voltage storage locations (grid) with 8 voltages stored at each location. You have the choice to record and playback your recall of these locations in a looper style (just play freely and spend arbitrary amount of time at any location) or as a clocked sequence (SH-101 style). Additionally you can traverse the matrix using the X and Y CV inputs to get Cartesian style sequencing. There is also variable slew that allows you to morph/glide between the values.

Notes
You can create sequences or loops in chord, scales or keyboard mode. The isomorphic keyboard grid can be set to 4, 12, or 16 notes. There are real-time performance looping, transposition and inversion capabilities via the CV inputs and dedicated loop button. In sequencer mode each step can be a tie, rest, or gate with size 25/50/75%. Basically we have created a way to very quickly and intuitively make chord sequences that are very musical and easy to manipulate. It is difficult to summarize in words but we will be sure to create some videos to demonstrate how easy and fun this is to play with. It definitely represents something unique in the landscape of Eurorack sequencers.

Combo
In this mode you can loop record your performance on any combination of the following functions: fader, bipolar fader, crossfader, euclidean sequencer, toggle switches or LFO. Kind of like Elektron style parameter locking but all of the motions is recorded continuously instead of just in slices. Instantly turn a simple patch into a highly animated and complex beast. The chosen function determines the type of signal (CV, note, trigger, gate, etc.) sent from each of Tetrapad’s eight independent outputs, while its multitude of multi-colored LEDs keep you informed of exactly what’s happening within each mode."

Introducing the Intellijel uMod, uAtt and uScale

"uAtt: 4hp quad passive attenuator. Has jumpers to select log or lin response.

uScale: 4hp quantizer and intelligent interval module
-buttons to select scale notes
-duo leds show scale pattern (red) and realtime quantized note (green)
-Special multifunction "shift" input operates in range +/-12 semitones. Jumper on pcb to select 0-10V or +/-5V interface.
-With shift you can alter the output in multiple ways including: transposing before force to scale, transposing in scale (e.g. a value of "4" results in the note transposed 4 scale degrees instead of 4 semitones) and post scaling which allows very interesting key changes. The shift destination can be routed to the main noteA, interval note B, both or the scale root (again creates really interesting scale changes). Output B (interval note) is derived from the root note. It can be selected as +/-12 semitone value.
-interval note can also remain chromatic (not forced to scale) so that you can have fixed intervals. Nice for FM perhaps.
-8 banks x 8 scales of store/recall
-manual scale root note shifting (essentially shift scale left/right)
-** in process of adding a scale select mode via shift input
-This thing makes anything sound musical!!!

uMod
-this is the first of a series of collaborations with analog guru David G. Dixon and based primarily on the SSM2164 quad VCA chip
In his words:
Quote:
It’s a ring modulator with a twist. It’s got a “Q Balance” knob which puts it into four-quadrant multiplication in the middle, and – or + two-quadrant multiplication at the left and right. The X and Y inputs also have rectifiers which pass the –, –/+, or + portions of each signal with the flip of a switch. This, along with the adjustable multiplication, gives a whole range of sonic possibilities not generally available from ring modulators. It also makes a wicked waveshaper as well as a very interesting CV mangler. See the attached document for some random scopeshots (will post soon). AC/DC coupling switches on each input add to the possibilities. Plus, since it’s based on opposing linearized 2164 VCA pairs on the same chip, it is very accurate and has almost no CV bleedthrough (unlike most ringmods).

Special thanks to Haven, James Cigler, and Shawn for great input on these modules.

These three are in production and price/ship date will be announced soon. uScale takes more work since it requires programming and calibration but I am working 24/7 to get some units shipped before x-mas (even if it is a small batch)."

Introduction to Outs

Published on Jul 11, 2019 Intellijel

"Outs enables your modular system to output both professional and prosumer compliant audio, and send it to external amplifiers, mixers, recording devices, or DAW interfaces. Using the L+R Level knob, it scales modular-level voltages down to the level required to drive external gear at either the +4dBu balanced professional line-level standard or the -10 dbV unbalanced standard.

Headphone monitoring is also provided via a low noise built-in headphone amp (with its own independent level control), capable of driving a wide range of impedances — from studio grade headphones to portable style earbuds.

To use Outs, simply connect the final output of your patch to the ⅛” inputs (where the built-in activity LEDs light up to indicate the presence and intensity of the input signal). The left input is normalled to the right, so you can create a stereo signal from a mono source. Or if you have an Intellijel Mixup, you can remove a jumper from its rear panel, and connect it to the Outs module using the 3-pin link cable included with the Mixup.

Features
Headphone amp capable of driving high impedance headphones via a 1/4″ stereo Neutrik jack.
Two channel, +4dBu balanced line level outputs on TRS 1/4″ Neutrik jacks (fully compatible with -10 dbV unbalanced audio gear).
Left input is normalled to the Right input, allowing a mono input signal to drive both stereo output channels.
LEDs to monitor the modular-level signal sent into the device.
Attenuator knob for the line out level, plus a separate volume control for headphones.
3-pin link connector on the back for connecting the output of a Mixup module directly to the Outs module."

INTELLIJEL uSCALE II TUTORIAL ~ Eurorack quantizer module

Published on May 10, 2017 once upon a synth

"This is a tutorial of the Intellijel uScale II eurorack module. This is a quantizer module which has two outputs that allow you to generate musical harmonies. It also features a shift CV input which can be assigned to different destinations. In general it allows you to shift notes using CV. In this video I'm using the Kilpatrick Phenol as a sound source (off camera). I use the Make Noise Maths and Korg SQ-1 as CV sources for both the note pitch and the Shift CV input. The uScale II can behave as a standard quantizer if you ignore the menu section. The menus provide control over how the Shift input behaves as well as settings the Output B interval, root note, managing scales and banks and clearing the scale. It's a pretty fun little module because it can take any kind of whacky voltage signal and turn it into something musical and inspiring."

intellijel designs Metropolis Sequencer Eurorack Module

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"the metropolis is a unique and powerful musical sequencer inspired by the ryk m-185 (a roland system 100m format sequencer.) but with many additional enhancements and functions.

the metropolis comprises eight "stages", each with its own assignable gate mode, pulse count and pitch value. each stage can also have a special slide or skip function activated too. the slide functionality is a constant time portamento very similar to the roland tb303 (unlike most synths/sequencers that use constant rate portamento) which produces a very musical and interesting result.

in addition to the base sequencer settings set with the sliders and switches there is a full menu of controls and auxiliary modifiers that allows the user to control and manipulate the sequence in many powerful ways including sequencer direction modes, pitch quantization and scale manipulators, clock dividers, shuffle and much more.

some of the features :
sequencer modes:
forward, forward-fixed, reverse, reverse-fixed, pingpong, pingpong-fixed, random, random-fixed, brownian, brownian-fixed
tb-303 style slide (constant time portamento) with adjustable time
stage skipping (double click slide buttons)
internal quantizing in any key and a choice of 30 different scales
can act as a master clk with tap tempo bpm control or slave to an external clock (with bpm detector)
save/load panel settings to eeprom
shuffle
internal clock divider with odd/even/all modes and can also be used to sync stage changes
sync output (sets output pulse on the first or last clock step of a sequence, used to slave other sequencers via reset)
two assignable aux inputs which can control: gate length, transpose, key shift, root shift, sequence length, step divisor and octave offset.
config menu to set slider pitch range, clock div type, sync type and reset type
all menu actions are one level deep. i.e. press the menu button and spin the encoder. there are no hidden levels or sub menus (except for the config menu_
all the core original m185 functions are there too. read more here

Atlantis And Quantized Quadrants

Published on Apr 25, 2019 Intellijel

"The Palette case provides just enough room for Atlantis, Scales, and Planar 2, which is fantastic because they pair so well together.

Here Planar is controlling PITCH on the X axis, and filter cutoff on the Y axis. The GATE output is triggering the GATE input on Atlantis, but also the Sample & Hold, which is feeding the SHIFT input to control the MOD oscillator on Atlantis. This lets us play two notes on Atlantis within the same scale. Digiverb gives everything a nice sheen of reverb at the end."

Tetrapad: Chapter 3 - Keyboard Mode

Published on Nov 25, 2017 intellijel

"Chapter 3 introduces Tetrapad's Keyboard Mode. Here you can select from 12 scales, and play a chord with every note of the scale. You can also rotate the note assignments, invert chords, and use portamento!

Tetrapad is a versatile, multi-dimensional, touch-sensitive control surface for Eurorack. Each of its four pads use force sensing resistors to respond to both the vertical position of your finger and its pressure. Four push encoders and a shift function give you even more tactile control over your modular system.
Tetrapad operates in numerous modes — each of which configures the module to perform a specific control task. Through these modes, Tetrapad can emulate a bank of faders; a voltage storage device; a finger drumming surface; a chord generator; an 8-key keyboard; four independent LFOs; or an 8-switch panel. The chosen mode determines what type of signal (CV, note, trigger, gate, etc.) is sent from each of Tetrapad’s eight independent outputs, while its multitude of multi-colored LEDs keep you informed of exactly what’s happening within each mode.
Tetrapad automatically remembers how you’ve configured each of its modes, and retains these settings when powered off. By default, Tetrapad automatically saves these settings every minute, or whenever you change modes. This makes Tetrapad ideal for live performance, since you know it will always power up with your configurations intact."
