v2 Jomox SunSyn Analog Synthesizer

via this auction
"This instrument was fully serviced, v2.0 upgraded, and burnt in by Jürgen Michaelis, the man behind JoMoX GmbH, in December of 2009.

Those who say that modern analog synthesizers simply cannot contend with their classic brethren simply have not played the SunSyn! And at under 200 units ever made, this is understandable. As a point of comparison, there were around 2000 Roland Jupiter 8 synthesizers produced. It has been noted by well versed users that the sunsyn can pull off a lot of other synths, but yet, not very many synths can 'pull off a sunsyn' when it's being modulated and when it's using the RCO digital waveforms or wave sequencing to its fullest. The power of having those RCOs at your disposal is nothing short of amazing.

The SunSyn also employs an elegantly designed routing system allowing modulation and signal routing usually found only on the full blown classic modular synths by ARP, E-mu, Moog and Buchla, turning it into an 8-voice modular with complete patch memory and multitimbral MIDI implementation. The multi-mode filter section is also a true analog design but with very modern features. It is a 4-pole filter but fully configurable with independent high pass and low pass switching for each pole, with a cross fader allowing seamless morphing sweeps between any two 'filter presets' you want. Create filters that range from the sounds of a Minimoog, to the squelchy 303 or classic Oberheim, or timbers completely unique to the SunSyn and morph between them as you play, or use it to set the 'bounds' of filter sweep for recording or performance situations setting zero to the lowest desired cuttoff and full crank as the highest cutoff, resonance envelope amount desired. Again a feature typically only found in the realm of high end modular synthesizers such as Serge Modular Music Synthesizers.

In addition to the two discrete analog oscillators per voice the SunSyn also has a pair of Ramp Controlled Oscillators fed by 7 wavesets with 248 waveforms each. With the version 2 upgrade these RCOs can include user waves or short samples uploaded to the SunSyn with user defined start points which restart syncronous to note triggers, and a loop length allowing the play back of samples of about 1.5 sec length.

While the version 2 upgrade does bring a final resolution to the bug list that SunSyn users have lived with for years, as well as adding new functionality and improving tuning, stability and noise, one of the most important yet often overlooked improvements is the inclusion of a firmware based boot-BIOS. This new boot routine which executes under any circumstances provides the user with the tools to recover from any potential issue regardless of the severity. This is just one more element allowing the SunSyn to be enjoyed as it ages and becomes part of the ranks of the vintage classics."

The Best of Both Worlds

A feat of instrument design, the SunSyn is a fantastically complex-in-all-the-right-places labor of love from German synthmaker JoMoX. Released in 1999, it can be considered in simple terms as an 8-voice polyphonic analog/digital hybrid, or in a more adventurous way as 8 discrete modular mono synths. Each voice is outfitted with 2 true analog oscillators capable of saw, square, or pulse with PWM, and 2 guided digital oscillators with hundreds of waveforms and custom sample support.

Shape-Shifter

The filter section is equally impressive, with a morphable 4-pole true analog filter with discrete control over each pole's cutoff frequency. But maybe the most groundbreaking aspect is the modulation matrix. In spirit it's much closer to that of larger modular analog systems, allowing 4096 possible routings per element, 4 elements per voice, all done in the analog domain. But unlike fully analog systems the modulation routings here can be quickly made through an interactive matrix and saved in patch memory for instant recall.

Resurrecting a Sun

Working with such a complicated instrument has its challenges, especially given its age and limited production. Many parts for the SunSyn are extremely rare and almost impossible to source. In our case, to complete the servicing and refurbishment our tech had to purge parts from a second unit. An expensive and somewhat painful process but worth it in the end, as our sound designers headed off to work on a fully-restored and perfectly calibrated instrument with factory-spec parts.

Deep Sound Design

Sound design possibilities on the SunSyn are nearly endless, and the results of our process with it are evident. From massive, rich, and evolving polysynth sounds created in multi-mode, to devastating and aggressive monosynth sounds utilizing modulations of both analog oscillators, the digital RCOs, and filter morphing. We designed and recorded hundreds of multisampled soundsets, ending with a curated selection of 420 layers, delivering what we think represent the most unique, charactered, and sometimes epic, sounds possible on this machine.

Professional Presets

Bass, Bells, Brass, FX, Keys, Leads, Native Sequences, Organ, Pads, Percussive, Plucks, Polysynth, Strings, Sweeps, Voices, Waveform Analog, Waveform Digital, over 450 all-new + custom designed presets are available, built from a library of 30,660 authentic hardware samples. All presets are fully-editable, meaning you can deeply customize them or even create your own. And the dual-layer architecture of PX SunBox allows you to easily create incredible layered tones from any combination of the included sounds.

Fully-Editable Architecture

PX SunBox gives you a deep and capable toolset for creating and editing patches. From the dual-layer architecture with ADSR amp envelopes, multimode filters with envelope, poly or mono modes with glide, pitch shifting and advanced stereo modes, and handy modwheel mappings, to LFO and step modulators, two feature-rich arpeggiators, and a generous selection of high-quality effects including 3-band EQ with sweepable crossover, drive, Thorus, ensemble, Phasor, digital delay, and Sparkverb.

Jomox Sunsyn Patches

Published on May 23, 2017 Perfect Circuit Audio

"The Jomox Sunsyn is a peculiar but formidable synthesizer. With eight voices with two analog oscillators each, the Sunsyn is capable of everything from wispy ethereal pads to unreal, destructive basslines. Among its more peculiar features are two 'Ramp Controlled Oscillators,' basically short wavetables that you can modulate with the same flexibility and reliability of tracking as an analog VCO. Various means of animating these RCOs are part of what gives the Sunsyn its unique sound: something between a PPG Wave and any number of classic monosynths. The other remarkable feature is its filter section: with four individually addressable poles, an enormous number of filter topologies can be emulated, for everything from acid squelch to fizzy bandpass to Moog-like thump. Here, we explore some of the different types of sounds the Sunsyn does well: analog keys, pads, and odd, digital glitchy things that resist labeling."

Jomox Sunsyn

images via this auction

"SERIAL No. 0060
Jomox introduces their first major analog real-time synthesizer. It's a true analog with 8 voices (4- and 6-voice versions available) housed in a classic looking desktop-style case with wood end-cheeks, 40 knobs, 42 buttons and 85 LED's! It's also rack-mountable if you prefer.

The SunSyn features 2 analog oscillators (VCO's) per voice. The waveforms include sawtooth, square and pulse with pulsewidth-modulation. But in addition to these are the new Ramp Controlled Oscillators (RCO's). The RCOs follow the VCO characteristics like modulation, sync, tuning and frequency alterations. The RCO's use digital sounds which come from 4 wavesets, each with 256 waveforms each. In effect, these digital sounds get an analog treatment for nicer, warmer and fatter tones. There are 4 RCO's per voice and wavesets can be added via PCMCIA-card.

The filter section is also a true analog design but with very modern features. It is a 4-pole filter but fully configurable with independent high pass and low pass features available. Create filters that range from the sounds of a Minimoog, to the squelchy 303. Filter settings can be stored in one of two scene memories and real-time Morphing between scenes can be accomplished.

As for modulation, JoMoX has devised a clever Routing System for the SunSyn, turning it into an 8-voice modular! It is used to virtually patch between various modules or parameters. There are up to 4 Routing Elements per voice with 4,096 possible combinations per Routing Element. Modulation paths are configured using the front panel display screens. This modular approach to signal routing is a feature usually found only on the huge, expensive classic Modular synths by ARP, E-mu, Moog and Buchla. Unlike those, however, the SunSyn features complete patch memory (350 patches and 150 multi-patches) and multitimbral MIDI implementation. Most parameters can be controlled by MIDI, and controller/editor templates for most sequencers will be, or already are available. As for output, there are stereo outs, 8 freely routable individual outs and a stereo input to run external audio through the Routing system.

The new SunSyn is a true analog synth built for the wealthy synthesists of today. For total analog control and sounds, check out the SunSyn, especially if you can afford it!

Specifications:
Polyphony - 8 voices (4- and 6- voice models available too)

"For sale is one of the rarest and most incredible sounding modern polyphonic synthesizers made, a legendary Jomox Sunsyn. Approximately only 200 were ever made and they only show up for sale a couple times of year. This unit in particular is in near mint shape and fully functional. Hardly any signs of use. It is fully functional and sounds incredible, 4-pole filter, RCOs, modulation matrix, easy to use knob-per-function interface, and huge massive unique sound. Nothing else sounds quite like a Sunsyn. Includes original manual and original box (which you almost never see with these, so makes a great collector item). You aren't likely to find another Sunsyn anytime soon in this kind of condition, don't pass this chance up!"

Sunsyn OS 2 Now Available

via the SunSyn site
"The SunSyn has to be sent to Jomox in order to perform the V 2.0 Update. Before doing so, we ask you to schedule the updating with Jomox by phone call or email and purchase this article in the Jomox webshop and pay the amount in advance as advised in the cash desk process.
Then please send the SunSyn to our home adress in Berlin.

The update includes all modifications, the firmware, recalibration and testing. Little repairs might be included if not too timeconsuming.

What's new?
BIOS
1. The SunSyn 2.0 contains a firmware based boot BIOS, which is executing under any circumstances. Most problems with SunSyns in the past came up by wrong OS midi sysex dumpings which, in some cases, led to non-booting and dead devices. This is not possible any more.

RCOs
1. Own waves or short samples can be transferred to the SunSyn by sysex midi dump.
2. We provide an editor (PC/MAC) that can convert any WAV or AIFF files on the computer and transfer them to the SunSyn. Each RCO bank can be transferred separately.
3. The RCO loops now always restart syncronous to a note trigger.
4. You can define a start point and a loop length, to which the RCO jumps back after reaching the end of the bank. Thus you are able to play back short samples of about 1.5 sec length if both old binary loop parameters (Course and Fine Loop) are set to 16.
5. RCO 1 can FM modulate RCO 2 now. However, the processing power of the old DSP is limited so that only one way is possible at an acceptable aliasing and tuning range.
6. The background noise of the RCOs is much improved by a hardware modification in order to let samples being played back much more clean.
More importantly, that improves the whole noise situation of the SunSyn in general.

VCOs
1. The tuning algorithm has been reworked, The VCOs are tuned much cleaner now.
2. The envelopes have got an automatic tuning algorithm, too. The tricky manual envelope tuning is history now.
3. The Pitch Bend Range now is adjustable in semitones across +/- one octave. Also the over- and underrange pitch playing when the VCOs are crossing the borders of the 6 octave keyboard CV range is well performed now.
4. Glide has been completely reworked. Now it works logarithmic as known from old analog synthesizers and has a much more musical knob range.

Multimode
1. The voice card allocation in multimode is cyclic now in order to let releasing voices decay properly even though another voice is triggered.
2. Latency of notes has been much improved and the pipelining has been completely new structured so that hanging and missing notes should be history now.
3. The multimode bugs like wrong output switching, wrong release, routing assignment interdependence, attack and RCO switching have been fixed. However, still there are some limitations for multimode as there are some parameters global and may affect other voices during context switching. These are: Glide, RCO Bank, RCO FM, RCO Start Point and Loop Length. If one of these parameters are different on two multis, changing of sound may occur between sounding voices."

Jomox Sunsyn Demos and Mini Review

Matti posted the following on the Analog Heaven List. I asked him if I could put up a post and he gave me the ok along with a few more audio samples to put up. Thanks Matti! The Sunsyn is probably the one high priced synth I still really, really want. I was fortunate enough to play with one in person and I really liked the sound of it. What's interesting is it reminded me of the early Oberheim SEMs as well. That said here are some words and samples from Matti:

"In short, I love the Sunsyn. If I had to compare it to an another synthesizer, well... Like you all know, talking and writing about how one experiences sound isn't that easy, but I'll give it a shot.

IMHO, the Sunsyn has a little bit of that early discrete Oberheim sound, but the tonality also reminds me of some modular systems. I have never played an early Obie and I have only a little experience with modulars, so this is opinion is largely based on recordings and demos I've heard.
In general, the sound is clear, defined and very much "alive". It doesn't always sound very "vintage-ish", but the sound is 110% pure analogue (unless you use the RCOs). One thing that makes the sound comparisons a bit hard, is that the filter is very configurable. You can easily make different timbral variations (softer, harder) of the same sound just by tuning the individual filter poles. Here's a couple of softer, PWM Sunsyn sounds:

If you are thinking about buying a Sunsyn, I really recommend trying before buying. Although I really love the sound and interface, I know there are people who don't. Some people have even compared it to a VA. My main gripe with it is that it's very picky about the MIDI signal it's receiving. some controllers and sequencers just don't go too well with the sunsyn. Otherwise, I haven't had any problems with it. Not even with the multimode. For me, the price was totally worth it.

- Matti"

"Here is your rare chance to own a Jomox Sunsyn Mk1 eight voice analog synthesizer. This synth is very rare, less than 200 made and you don't see them come up for sale more than a couple times a year. There is a reason for that: they sound incredible! My favorite analog synthesizer, amazing analog sound that's very unique. NOTHING sounds like a Sunsyn. The routing and modulation capabilities are great and it's all very easy to use and hands on with minimal menu diving. The RCO's are fantastic and the variable four pole filter is one of the best I've used. It can do classic analog synth sounds but with the RCO and routing it reaches into new territory. This synth is in near mint shape and fully functional. This is a V1, SN008x. This was a backup unit and lightly used in a smoke free home studio. Only selling it because I have other urgent purchase needs for my studio right now. I would take this over other modern synths like the Andromeda and older stuff like Memorymoog or Prophet 5. It seriously sounds that good, a king for pads and modulation effects..."

"Here is your rare chance to own a Jomox Sunsyn Mk1 eight voice analog synthesizer. This synth is very rare, less than 200 made and you don't see them come up for sale more than a once every couple years. There is a reason for that: they sound incredible! This synth is in near MINT shape and fully functional. Very very clean all around with only minor signs of use. Screen is bright & easy to read. This is a V1, later serial number 016x. Reportedly some of the earlier serial numbers has minor stability issues but this one being a later production unit has never had any bug issues or stability problems. Only selling it because I am not making any music these days and cutting back on the gear. Includes wood sides and rack ears along with a new custom made padded flight case for safe shipping (flight case not pictured but it is included, very nice quality and was $300 new). It will be double boxed for extra protection during shipping.

Incredible routing possibilities without needing to menu dive, tons of hands on knobs makes this very intuitive for sound creation. It can do classic analog synth sounds but with the RCO and routing it reaches into new territory. I would take this over other modern synths like the Andromeda and older stuff like Memorymoog, Prophet 5 or Jupiter 8. It seriously sounds that good, a king for pads and modulation effects. Jurgen of Jomox on the Price of the New Sunsyn

If you recall from this post a new SunSyn is on the way. Mr. Array spotted the following from Jurgen on gearslutz. BTW, I'm not seeing the price on the Sunsyn page, but according to VICMOD in the comments of the last post it was around 5000 Euros which currently comes to about $7000 US. Update via Mr. Array on the price: "5000 Euro price includes VAT, so it's closer to $6000 USD"

"Very simple:

1. a very essential part ( the vcas used - there are 20 on each voice card
plus 20 on the main board -180 per SunSyn) is obsolete and not produced any
further. There is no direct replacement, so I would have to redesign the
whole circuitry. The sunsyn voice board layout which I made 10 years ago was
the worst thing I ever did...it's dense like a persian carpet. sometimes I
say to myself it's a wonder that it works;)

2. The processors that were used are ****ing old and too small in power and
many more little issues. a COMPLETE redesign is necessary. Also a complete
new OS programming.

3. The whole market for these bolide synths is fairly overestimated...it's a
big rush now because none has one to sell. But if I go down and make it, it
will take me years though and once it's finished, the market is elsewhere.

4. It's a damned ****ing job to BUILD sunsyns. Every build is a repair
because this monster is just way too complex and there are millions of
possible errors. And these errors OCCUR according to murphys law. It took me
(and I'm fast, trust me) about 2 days to build one SunSyn from scratch if I
count all the time of failure search, modifications, repairings and more. I
have had only 1 guy in 10 years that was able to make them (almost) alone
without my help.
I forgot to say...SunSyns don't grow on trees;)

5. discussions about OS bugs. There were times when many people were yelling
at me about SunSyn bugs and noises, tuning instabilities, VCO mod offsets
and more....and I have to say, yes, they were right up to a certain point.
But I'm not masochistic, too and it didn't make fun, honestly. I would do it
better now...but that would require to make a redesign.

6. it's not that easy to really make money on such a thing...I could tell
you some stories if we were sitting in a bar and having a drink;)

7. My life time is just too precious to make another one. Why should I do
this? I have made it once, and it would not be better if I did it another
time. There are easier ways to make your living than to build and sell
sunsyns. It's made with blood, sweat and tears...

8. SunSyn was always a bit backward oriented...it's an analog poly synth
with some features and a great sound. But it's like refurbishing oldtimers.
I want to go forward with new ideas, admittedly.

Guess why the Wave hadn't been produced any more? same issues...time, money,
human resources, market. To expensive, too sensitive, too much risk. It took
me years, but I think I've learned my lessons and almost went bankrupt.

Hope this was an honest and exhausting explanation:-))

PS....and I didn't say I would never make another synth...but not likely a
SunSyn;)"

"The SunSyn features 2 analog oscillators (VCO's) per voice.

As for output, there are stereo outs, 8 freely routable individual outs and a stereo input to run external audio through the Routing system."

"This is a chance to buy an extremely rare, highly collectable Jomox Sunsyn in nearly new condition. This synth, bought directly from Jomox has been in a smoke free recording studio and has rarely been used. It's a truly amazing synth with an incredibly full and powerful sound which didn't fit into the style of music I was eventually making so has spent much of its time stored in its original box. I'm loathe to give this up but accept it's time to let go of this fabulous machine so another owner can put this to better use.

Only around 200 of these synths were ever made and very rarely come up for sale.

*Note that this is the original system software version 1
