Hi-Res Pics of Black Corporation's Upcoming KIJIMI 8-Voice Analog Synthesizer

Click the pics for full size.

"KIJIMI, a new 8-voice analogue synth by Black Corporation. Info, presentation and preorders start at Superbooth."

Black Corporation of course are the people behind Deckard's Dream, the Yamaha CS80 inspired polysynth. The KIJIMI will be RSF inspired - essentially a polyphonic Kobol with ssm2040-like filters, Kobol waveshapers, additional modulation sources and destinations, an additional HPF, 2nd LFO, extended envelopes, and polyAT. A prototype KIJIMI was spotted at NAMM this year.

Update: some additional info added above.

Black Corporation Kimji SN 1278

"Folks this is a really cool piece. I took this in recently as part of a large gear swap. There was a lot of buzz last year about this synth called Kimji by Black Corporation of Japan. I believe they may have only made 10 or so of these as part of a very limited initial run. This is serial number 1278. It includes the original box. There is no physical manual but there is one accessible online. The unit is in mint condition and the pictures are of the actual unit you will unbox.
The Black Corporation Kijimi is a faithful recreation of the very rare and highly sought after French wonder-synth the RSF Polykobol. Originally released in 1979 the PolyKobol MK1 was restricted to only 30 units worldwide and is considered to be one of those most significant synths developed in this era.

Kijimi is an 8 voice polyphonic synthesizer with two continuously variable oscillators per voice, an incredible modulation section, MPE compatibility, preset storage and recall and build quality that is enviable to say the very least.

Kijimi’s inspiration, the Polykobol was a synth that was very much ahead of its time, providing a wealth of unique features and tone shaping options that even to this day stand out, such as the continuously variable wave shaping, open and easily assignable modulation section with 5 sources and multiple destinations and a rich, interesting filter tone.

Owning an original RSF Polykobol is, even for the most diehard collector almost impossible. Just like with their Deckards Dream CS-80 inspired powerhouse, Black Corporation have again made one of the most inaccessible synths, accessible for everyone.

Kijimi is another standout synthesizer from Black Corporation, delivering the sound quality, aesthetics and workflow of a Polykobol with all the mod cons you’d expect from a modern machine.

The main features of the Black Corporation Kijimi include

8 voice polyphonic analogue synthesizer
Inspired by the legendary RSF Polykobol
CRN3340 based VCO’s
SSM2040 based vilter
Polyphonic aftertouch
MPE compatible"

Deckard's Dream - Gear Guide - Superbooth 2018

Published on May 8, 2018 FACTmagazine

"FACT was at Berlin synth show Superbooth last week, where we tried out all the latest and greatest synth gear.

At Black Corporation's booth we got a sneak preview of Kijimi, a new eight-voice instrument inspired by a rare French polysynth from the 1970s. While we were there, we couldn't resist also checking out Deckard's Dream, the company's existing synth based on the Yamaha CS-80 – the synth used by Vangelis to write the classic Blade Runner score.

Black Corporation Kijimi With Keith McMillen K-Board Pro 4

Published on Sep 25, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"Black Corporation's Kijimi and Keith McMillen's K-Board Pro 4 make a stellar pair: and synth and controller that combine to offer enormous expressive potential via MPE.

Kijimi is an eight-voice analog synth based on the super rare RSF Polykobol. It not only allows for MPE control, but features a rich set of internal modulation options great for adventurous synthesists and sound designers.

K-Board Pro 4 is an MPE-capable MIDI keyboard, providing extended expressive control with a familiar feel and user interface. By treating each key like an XYZ expression pad, KBP4 provides uncommon musical potential to keyboardists.

Black Corporation KIJIMI Gets a Software Update

See the demo with Ricky Tinez posted here.

"Some great news from Black Corporation, we have just released a firmware update for KIJIMI to REV1.1.0. This update expands the overall filter range of Kijimi and takes modulation capabilities even further to allow for even more exciting directions to control modulation destinations.

Release Notes:

To use, press lit mod matrix selector button and turn AMOUNT knob to attenuate to each individual destination. This allows the user to control modulations with increased detail.

LFO can now be synced to MIDI. (MENU -> LFO -> LFO1/2 -> SYNC)

Dividers and multiplayers are set by the LFO RATE knobs rate pots which range: 1/32, 1/24, 1/16, 1/12, 1/8, 1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8. This is only in MONO LFO mode and when AD Destinations are set to amplitude.

Black Corporation Kijimi: Let's Stack Witih the Hydrasynth!

video upload by Mostly Synths and Keyboards (Logan)

"Here are 9 patches using both the Kijimi and the Hydrasynth. The first 10 seconds of each sound are Hydrasynth only, then the Kijimi is added. Minimal reverb added, the clipping in the second-to-last sound is part of the Hydrasynth patch. Hydrasynth sounds are presets- in case you're playing along at home:

0:00 A-077
1:02 B-042
1:40 A-054
2:15 A-089
3:12 B-015
4:18 B-045
5:11 M1-016
6:15 D-068
6:56 D-087

The Kijmi adds a nice body to the Hydrasynth. As much as I love the Hydrasynth, there's nothing analog about its sound. This combination could do some amazing evolving sounds but I don't have the patience for that."

Or is it SN 1603? See the pics below.

Note the seller for this one is Pittsburgh Modular so likely safe. :)

"Black Corporation Kijimi was purchased new by Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers for use in our studio. We used this unit on our studio for a few months before it was packed up.

** There is a scratch on the top of the case. It is highlighted in one of the photos.

** "Kijimi" is written on the power adapter in silver sharpie so I would not confuse it with other power adapters. This is visible in one of the photos.

The sale includes everything that we received with the unit. Original box, power adapter, and documentation. The synthesizer will be double boxed and shipped from Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers.

"Amazing 8 voice analog polysynth.

In addition to the two VCOs, you have a sub-oscillator and noise. These run into a great sounding Low Pass filter with its own dedicated ADSR envelope and then to a VCA with plenty of drive (and of course it has a dedicated ADSR as well).

OK, all that sounds great, but you've seen it all before. However, the Kijimi has more tricks up its sleeve. For starters, it's MPE-capable and you have independent control over velocity and polyphonic aftertouch.

The modulation section to the left has a pair of LFOs and they can be synced, shaped by envelopes, and routed to a lot of modulation destinations. This unit has the 1.2 OS installed, which gives you independent amounts of modulation per destination, effectively giving you an LFO per voice.

In addition to the LFO and envelopes, you have a lot of MIDI modulation sources at your disposal.

Basically, this synth can range from being a simply WYSIWYG analog poly to a full-blown almost modular powerhouse with the ability to draw out every nuance of your playing and rewarding the detailed sequencing edits you can do in a DAW.

In addition to the audio and MIDI In/Out/Thru connectors, there is a USB port as well on the back. The headphone jack is conveniently located on the front panel.

This Kijimi has never been rackmounted and is in excellent condition and comes with the power brick and original box."

Trying Out the Kijimi's Polyphonic Aftertouch

video upload by Mostly Synths and Keyboards (Logan)

"Recently, I got a Hydrasynth Deluxe and I've been so busy learning about it I haven't tried out its polyphonic aftertouch with the Kijimi until now. This is patch 48 from my bank LM and I've just changed the pressure to lower pitch by a 2nd.

It takes some getting used to! Especially using pitch bend successively for vibrato. But there's so many ways it can be useful and I'm having fun with the other aftertouch destinations now too. This should hold me over until the PAt keyboard version of the Kijimi with 88 waterfall keys and 16 voices that they are developing just for me."
