Novation // SL MkIII 1.2 Update - Spencer Zahn & Jacob Bergson: 'Cyanotype' live

Published on Dec 20, 2019 NovationTV

"Jacob Bergson and Spencer Zahn perform Spencer's 'Cyanotype' live, in-studio, in London. By using two Novation SL MkIII’s, a Novation Bass Station II, Moog Sub37, Eurorack modular synthesizer, Ableton Live, and upright bass, Zahn and Bergson are able to play, modulate, and sequence all elements of the song live.

You can now download the latest firmware update for the SL MkIII straight from Novation Components - we've added some of your most asked-for new features and workflow enhancements, making our flagship controller keyboard for Ableton Live (and other DAWs) more powerful and versatile than ever. SL MkIII 1.2 also squashes a few bugs and improves general stability.

Update details:

"The latest firmware for the SL MkIII rewards users’ patience (thank you for bearing with us) with the addition of your most asked-for new features and workflow enhancements, making our flagship controller keyboard for Ableton Live (and other DAWs) more powerful and versatile than ever. SL MkIII 1.2 also, of course, squashes a few bugs and improves general stability.

We’re already accepting feature requests on the next update, too, so if you have an idea for a useful SL MkIII function, let us know via our Synth Owners group on Facebook.

Microstep editing

The Sequencer resolution has been increased to incorporate 6 microsteps per step, enabling notes to be positioned off the grid for the programming of subtle timing variations, fast triplet runs, glitchy repeats and more.

Step View pattern scrolling

The Up and Down buttons can now be used to scroll through all your loaded sequencer patterns for viewing and editing, without deselecting the pattern currently playing. This is of particular benefit to live performers, who can make changes to upcoming patterns on the fly – whether they’re in a chain or running individually – before they’re actually played.

Assignable Aftertouch

Giving your SL MkIII performances an expressive boost, Aftertouch has been made assignable to any MIDI CC you like within Components. Now you can use key pressure to control anything in your DAW or synth capable of receiving MIDI, from opening a filter or modulating oscillator pulse width, to increasing the depth of a distortion effect or detuning a unison stack.

More responsive knobs

We’ve increased the responsiveness of the SL MkIII’s rotary encoders for deeper, smoother adjustment of parameters over a shorter rotational distance, with no audible stepping.

Increased Gate length

With the maximum step length doubled to 32, you can record and sequence longer MIDI notes within patterns, for more complex and expressive tracks.

Enhanced NRPN Control

As well as outputting the full range of MIDI CCs, The SL MkIII 1.2 now also communicates with all NRPN-enabled devices. Not only does this greatly expand its hardware control remit, it also lets you manipulate viable parameters at higher resolution than standard MIDI allows.

And that’s not all, of course! SL MkIII 1.2 introduces plenty more workflow fixes and improvements – fire up Components to see the full list of additions and changes, and download the update."

Arpeggiator swing setting is maintained between power-cycles.

Ratchet LED will now always light up to register key press, even while in step edit mode.

ARP/SEQ clock output mode (global parameter 2.2) now defaults to "only when playing"

Modulation Oscillator square wave polarity defaults to bipolar (now consistent with manual).

Arp MIDI Output Mode default setting is now consistent with documentation in the manual.

Modor Microtonal Upgrade v 013

via Modor where you'll find some demos.

"There's a new upgrade for the NF-1 (OS013) and NF-1m (OS006), ready for download at our download page! What's new?

The Chorus/Flanger effect unit finally works entirely stable under heavy feedback, positive or negative. About time! No more ugly digital spikes or speaker-damaging noise bursts, you can safely turn up the feedback and enjoy comb filter self oscillation.

The active Osc and Env selection get saved with the patch (NF-1 only)

Osc phase randomisation can be selected. Before (and still the default), all oscillator phases got reset at the beginning of a note. Now they can be randomized to get some more 'life' in some patches. That's more or less the same as so-called free running oscillators

You can set your NF-1(m) to start from the last loaded/saved patch at bootup. The default is still bootup with the empty init patch, but you can alter this in the System Settings menu

And last but very, very far from least, Modor goes microtonal!

Microtonal? Oh boy ... That ear-torturing stuff for freaks and nerds desperately seeking for something to sound distinct. Really, do we need to go that way?

Well, not entirely ... There's much more than you might think. Listen to the following examples of a major C chord. First in standard 12-tone equal temperament tuning (most synthesizers' basic tuning), and then in Just Intonation. Quite a difference, isn't it? Does the first one have some chorus effect on it? No, not at all...

Most synths (and many, many other instruments) use 12-EDO (12 Equal Divisions of the Octave), also known as (12-tone) equal temperament. The octave just gets divided in 12 equal parts, the 12 semitones of the octave. But that's actually only an approximation of real harmony. On a just intonated chord like the one above, the three notes C-E-G have their frequencies in proportion 4/4 - 5/4 - 6/4, or 1 - 1,25 - 1,5. On an equal tempered chord that's 1 - 1,25992105 - 1,498307077. So that's only an approximation, the three notes are sounding close, but keep slightly beating. In a just intonated chord, the three notes grab each other close and sound together as an integer unity. Both versions do sound well, but you can't say they're equal!"
