Mark Jenkin's "The iPad Album" Synth List

See the update in this post. Note "The iPad Album" precedes the new Gorillaz iPad album and technically appears to be the first commercially available album made with the iPad. However it is worth noting iMatik made withe the iPhone preceded both. See this post for reference. One thing that hasn't been done from what I can tell is an album produced and mixed on the iPad or iPhone from start to finish. Note: "Mark Jenkins is the author of "Analog Synthesizers" available worldwide through Amazon(posted here) and an internationally published music technology author and keyboard collector."

Gorillaz to Make First iPad Only Album?

via MTV
"Though the Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am has been touting the wonders of recording on an iPad, Albarn said he was keen to record the world's first iPad-only album."

There have been plenty of iPad only tracks, but an entire album? I forget if any have been made. If you know, feel free to comment or shoot me an email.

Update: We might have found one. iMatik previously posted here on March 15, 2010. Thanks goes to soh_la in the comments for the reminder. Note it obviously depends on how it's defined. iPad vs. iPhone, use of any external samples and/or mixing, etc...

Update on iMatik: "[We] did use an analog bus compressor and plugins on my iPhone album, my main rule was that all sounds originate from the phone, but that I could process them a little if needed..."

Update via UK in the comments: "The first iPad album is 'The iPad Album' released worldwide by Mark Jenkins in October 2010. This was pretty widely publicized at the time and the album performed live in Holland.

The CD has been available since then internationally through

www.groove.nl

and through

www.markjenkins.co (not dot com. - this is a dot co domain)"

Update: new post on MATRIXSYNTH-C

Update: the Gorillaz iPad only album is titled THE FAll.

"iPad Applications Used: Speak It! / SoundyThingie / Mugician / Solo Synth / Synth / Funk Box / Gliss / AmpliTube / Xenon / iElectribe / BS-16i / M3000 HD / Cleartune / iOrgel HD / Olsynth / StudioMiniXI / BassLine / Harmonizer / Dub Siren Pro / Moog Filatron

Produced by Gorillaz and Stephen Sedgwick. Recorded by Stephen Sedgwick and Gorillaz, except track 11 with additional recording by Mike Smith. Mixed by Stephen Sedgwick at Studio 13. Mastered by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road Studios. Published by Chrysalis Music Ltd / Copyright Control."

David Vorhaus Analogue Electronic Music 1979

YouTube via JeffreyPlaide

"In this historical video excerpt, David Vorhaus talks about two of his analogue inventions - the MANIAC analogue sequencer, and the Kaleidophon from 1979. The MANIAC (Multiphasic Analog Inter-Active Chromataphonic (sequencer)) was an analogue sequencer having variable step lengths, and the ability to split sequences into several smaller groupings giving considerable sonic potentiality. Addition and subtraction of events was possible, as well as the possibility to chromatically correct the output during performance. David could program his MANIAC sequencer to play a background rhythm or combination of musical events, to then improvise over the top with another instrument or synthesizer. The Kaleidophon was a double-bass-like instrument using four velocity-sensitive ribbon controllers instead of strings. The instrument is played entirely using the left hand, leaving the right hand free to manipulate the sound via a number of controllers and a joystick. David speaks about the processes of making electronic music, and the developments that such possibilities can provide for the imaginative electronic musician. This excerpt is taken from the BBC 1979 documentary entitled "The New Sound of Music" hosted by Michael Rodd."

Update via Mark Jenkins in the comments: "David Vorhaus now has a new version of the M.A.N.I.A.C. sequencer designed as a complete music system on a PC, and a new custom built MIDI version of the Kaleidophon controller. We've been performing as a duo with this setup for a couple of years, including shows in Holland, Germany, China and France as well as the UK. And yes, we have been playing "Cygnus Constellation", the piece heard at the end of this clip :-) The next show is in London on Saturday November 28th at the Greenwich Planetarium, where we'll be performing new White Noise music, and my own planetarium show "Supernova" which has a complete computer graphic backing. Tickets from the National Maritime Museum (£18.00 I think if sales aren't already live on their website www.nmm.ac.uk) and there are early and late shows the same evening. Hope to see some of you there - Mark Jenkins"

Analog Synthesizers by Mark Jenkins

brian c found this one on analog synths. If anyone knows if it's any good feel free to comment. The following is the description on Amazon. I also added it to my Synth Books section.

"Analog Synthesizers: Understanding, Performing, Buying- from the legacy of Moog to software synthesis (Paperback)

Book Description
In this book, the technical explanation of the nature of analog sound creation is followed by the story of its birth and its subsequent development by various designers, manufacturers and performers.

The individual components of analog sound creation are then examined in detail, with step by step examples of sound creation techniques. Then the modern imitative analog instruments are examined, again with detailed instructions for programming and using them, and the book is completed with appendices listing the major instrument lines available, hints on values and purchasing, other sources of information, and a discography of readily available recordings which give good examples of analog sound synthesis.

The CD which accompanies the book gives many examples of analog sound creation basics as well as more advanced techniques, and of the abilities of the individual instruments associated with classical and with imitative analog sound synthesis.

* A complete history of analog sound in one work
* Interviews with industry Legends and developers of of analog synthesizers
* Audio CD of demo sounds and tuitional pieces to illustrate the processes discussed in the book"

Moog on the Moon

Jonathan Lutz posted this on AH. Looks interesting. If anyone knows more or can actually make this in Philly, please feel free to comment.

"The Franklin Institute presents this spectacular analog synthesizer show featuring an out-of-this-world visual journey on the Fels Planetarium dome. Includes tribute to the late Bob Moog, inventor of the famous Moog Synthesizer."

Update via AH:
"Mark Jenkins is flying in tonight from the UK. 2/3 of my band Xeroid Entity (I'm unavailable Saturday night) will be at the concert. Orbital Decay from Quakertown, who have played many times on my radio program (Galactic Travels, WDIY, Allentown) as well as on Star's End (WXPN, Philadelphia) and at the Soundscapes and the Gatherings concert series, will be there. All three bands played at the fantastic new Electro-music festival last June. (See http://electro-music.com for details.)It's a Moog tribute concert in a planetarium.

1. There will be analog synths.
2. It's being held in a planetarium.
3. The musicians are top shelf.

Conclusion: If that isn't enough to get you to go to this, then you must be living in Timbuktu. ;-)

Cheers,

Bill Fox - http://soundscapes.us"
