The Magical Sound of the Wing Pinger

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
video upload by Robin Rimbaud-Scanner

"First proper play with the Wing Pinger, an outstanding new instrument from Meng Qi. It can move from very gentle arping melodies to harsh noise in the blink of an eye. You can play the keyboard and latch the notes on each and build up layers of sound. Here I'm using it with the Bugbrand PT Delay and a little bit of reverb from the Eventide H9. Try and listen in stereo or on headphones if you can, to feel the sound move around you. More of this here: https://scanner.bandcamp.com/album/wi...

And yes, there was an earth hum issue here with noise. I'm aware of this and apologise!"

Note this listing is not for the same unit in the video above; it was just included in the listing as a demo of the Wing Pinger in general and hasn't been featured here before.

"The Wing Pinger is a remarkable new analog music instrument that allows you to combine melody and noise in perfect harmony. Thanks to a highly playable interface, this latest product offering from Meng Qi is actually many things all at the same time.

The Wing Pinger is designed for musicians and non-musicians alike. It’s composed of a pair of 4-pole resonant low pass filters and a network of peripheral logic circuits. The filters can be cross “pinged” and modulated, both directly and by generated step signals.

Plain and simple, this delivers an instrument capable of producing continually evolving music across the spectrum, from controlled to chaotic. The finely tuned parameter range and intuitive interface allow players to perform entirely on intuition, producing ever-changing and rich-sounding ambient, noise or meditative music with minimal or zero user interaction.

The Wing Pinger is also at home in any musical environment. For example, it can be used as a stand-alone instrument or with whatever gear you have. The unit is equipped with both MIDI and CV I/O and can ping literally anything that has an audio or trigger input and output or emits a decaying sound."

水滴山洞 / denseWaterCave

video upload by Meng Qi

"Wing Pinger〈-〉Wingie2 -〉Magneto

It’s Superbooth time of a year. Catch a glimpse of Wingie2.

Wingie2 is a portable stereo resonator like Wingie1. In this video, it's inside a fb loop of Wing Pinger to generate the water cave sounds. Magneto provides sound coloration and incrases the density.

Superbooth 临近,我也放一点小羽二的预览。

小羽二和一代一样,也是个便携立体声共鸣器。它在这个视频中和振翅一起作用,生成了滴水山洞般的声音,Magneto 增加了声音的密度并润色。

ASTROGENIC HALLUCINAUTING - late night noiz for late night fiends

video upload by thenoiztemple

"ASTROGENIC HALLUCINAUTING - late night noiz for late night fiends - for more noiz: https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/as... website: http://manipulate.net This is a series of live noiz and video noiz performances.

This marks #365...a year's worth of somewhat nightly noiz rituals for the adept Psychonaut.
The noiz will continue as always but this is a small goal achieved.

Late Night Noiz For Late Night Fiends has become a ritual of live noiz performances that finds similarities or parallels in Buddhist Sand Mandalas.

Every noiz generator is patched together with an accompanying designed video synthesis that seems to represent what I am hearing. Then...after the session...everything is turned off...most if not all patches are not saved and any analog settings are lost in the ether.

All that remains is the two track and it's accompanying visual abstraction.

Anyhow...the soundscape continues...more noiz!

Meng Qi - Ping Garden

video by Meng Qi

"New Year Gift : Ping Garden Software Instrument

Happy Chinese New Year! We wish you a great fruitful 2021. Here is a gift from us, it's called Ping Garden, a software instrument utilizing Mac multitouch pad as playing interface. It uses filter pinging and FM for sound synthesis.

When I was working on Wing Pinger in last year's CNY, factories were closed during the holiday, so I learned a bit of SuperCollider to kill time. That's how Ping Garden was born.

Ping Garden makes rain falling sounds with gestural control density. Here is a small video of me playing it. Hope you enjoy.

Wing Pinger Pulses

Robin Rimbaud-Scanner

"A rhythmic exploration of the truly inspiring Meng Qi Wing Pinger. A simple live improvisation running the Wing Pinger through the Eventide H9 pedal, and a little bit of looping with the Montreal Assembly Count to 5 pedal later on. A little sketch, nothing more. And, of course, recommended to listen to on speakers or headphones 😀"

Meng Qi : 静止 Static | 流动 Flow

Meng Qi

流动 Flow

"Link to EP : http://bit.ly/WPResoFb

2020 was a bumpy year. But there was a major achievement for me, which is the release of Wing Pinger and Wingie. For so long I've been dreaming of designing standalone synth, for that standalone synths convey more of designers' ideas and decisions. The release of Wing Pinger and Wingie are not just a graduation ceremony for me, it marks a starting point for new adventures.

In 2021, I have two major plans for me. One is several collaborative synth projects with synth designers I've admired for a long time. Once done, it'll fullfill my life goal in some way. Another is working with Annqi for a Chinese synthesizer podcast and WeChat social media, it's called 合成少数派 (Synthesize Minority). You can consider following it if you use WeChat.

At this moment, I would like to release an EP, it's called Wing Pinger Resonator Feedback. It was an experiment I've done in April, by using Ableton Resonator in the feedback loop of Wing Pinger. The thoughts behind was to use Wing Pinger chaos for timbers and dynamics, and to use Resonator to broadly hinting stable pitches. In this case, there is no need to worry about pitch quantization in a chaotic system, but "quantization" happens naturally with resonances. This method frees up the chaotic system, and at the same time providing stable tonal feels.

This experiment inspired me and actually gave me a new way of thinking. It's the start of designing Wingie, as well as a start for a very important collaborative project, and certainly means a lot to me. I choose the first day of 2021 to release it, as I concluded 2020, and start the new year fresh.

Wish all of you good luck in your future endeavours.

Wing Pinger Leploop Live Improvisation

Robin Rimbaud-Scanner

"Another little run around in the sonic playground today, with Meng Qi's Wing Pinger and the rather minimalist electronic music live-performance groove-box known as the LepLoop. A touch of reverb on the Wing Pinger and that's it. Live playing, with no synchronisation between the machines, just having fun. Just as making music should be. This is not a finished piece, just an exploration, light and exploratory."

Meng Qi Wing Pinger Nü

Published on Aug 26, 2019 Meng Qi

via Meng Qi Music

"This is a special model - Wing Pinger Nü.

“Nü” is the pronunciation of “Female” in Chinese. I believe arts come from female nature, from subconscious, perception, emotions, freedom and chaos.
Technically :
The internal dual chromatic touch keyboards have 2 modes :

1) PINGING - keyboard pings filters;
2) PINGED - arpeggiation with filter pings as clock, with optional latch.

A marriage of melody & chaos with the Meng Qi Wing Pinger // Superbooth 2019

Published on May 9, 2019 DivKidVideo

"The new Wing Pinger from Meng Qi had really caught my attention with seemingly random pentatonic melodies shifting through a great spring reverb (not part of the module) on the Meng Qi Instagram page. We check out the Wing Pinger as well as some custom and one builds of Lorre Double Knot controllers and Ciat Lonbarde Sidrax and Tetrax based synthesisers."

Meng Qi Wing Pinger Prototype Videos

Published on May 1, 2019 Meng Qi

Playlist:

1. Wing Pinger - Chaos
With multiple feedback and cross modulation paths, Wing Pinger operates according to the principles of chaos theory. All parameters except volume are interactive, future outputs are related to the current state as well as parameter settings.
2. Wing Pinger - CVGate
Wing Pinger talks to modular synthesizers via Banana jacks. Use TRIGGER outputs to sync external synthesizers to filter pings. STEP outputs are weighted mixes from shift registers.
3. Wing Pinger - Tonal Patterning
Be chaotic at will, you don't miss the expressions from melodies. Wing Pinger is capable of generating pentatonic patterns from its carefully weighted STEP modulation.
4. Wing Pinger - External Sound Processing
Process stereo or dual mono signals through great sounding filters, add spice to the tone, generate movements with special Wing Pinger modulations.

Wing Pinger will be at SUPERBOOTH and other events. You can find the list on the Meng Qi website.

"Your link to organic analog texture, rhythm, noise and melodies.

Travels between chaotic and tonal passages as fast as your emotions shift.

It encourages fine playing gestures and rewards practicing.

Wing Pinger is an analog musical instrument, centered around a pair of 4-pole resonate low pass filters.

Surrounded by a network of comparators, pulse converters, binary counters and shift registers.

Despite the absence of oscillators, it's fully capable, and actually designed to generate sound on its own."
