Korg Monologue, MicroFreak, Novation Circuit, Volca FM, NTS-1, Lone Rider

Korg Monologue, MicroFreak, Novation Circuit, Volca FM, NTS-1, Lone Rider part 1

Waveformer

"First part of a three-part jam, featuring the Korg Monologue, Arturia MicroFreak, Novation Circuit, Volca FM, and with Zoom MS-70CDR and Korg NTS-1 on effects.

My music on Bandcamp: http://waveformer42.bandcamp.com/

This jam was originally planned to be around 45 minues, with lots of different parts, and lots of different solos played live on the Monologue. All planned out over 3 sheets of paper with plenty of notes scribbled all over. I did record a 45 minute take, but wasn't happy with the performance so I decided to scrap it. And ... playing the whole thing live was kind of daunting, so I chickened out and decided to make this a three part jam with a common soundset and some common themes.

This is the first of the three planned parts.

"Build it, tweak it, connect it; a world of synthesis at your fingertips!

Korg is always building new ways to experience hands-on, fun music-making.
Now, you can too.

The Nu:Tekt NTS-1 digital KIT is a unique, flexible, and easy DIY synthesizer that you can easily assemble yourself, without any soldering (tool included!).

The first of its kind from KORG’s DIY-focused Nu:Tekt brand, NTS-1 packs a powerful synth and multi-effects engine into a compact form factor that you can carry and connect anywhere. Its DIY nature means it’s also very customizable. Explore the possibilities!

NTS-1 is also completely compatible with the logue-SDK*, so it is possible to run any custom oscillator and effect content available for minilogue xd and prologue, or, create your own.

* When using 3rd party plugins on the NTS-1 please consult with the developer first as the content may sound differently than with minilogue xd or prologue based on polyphony.

A wide range of sonic possibilities

Belying its size, the Nu:Tekt NTS-1 features a digital oscillator inspired by the MULTI engine as found on the acclaimed prologue and minilogue xd, along with an extremely capable arpeggiator including multiple ranges, scales, and modes, plus dedicated spatial, modulation, and delay sections, each with multiple settings to explore.

With a single monophonic digital oscillator, one multimode filter, on EG, three LFOs, three stereo effect processors, and full arpeggiator, the NTS-1 is a very powerful, flexible, fun-to-explore synth.

The main oscillator can produce Sawtooth, Triangle, Square and VPM waveforms, and can load custom oscillators created from Korg’s logue SDK, which means it’s compatible with content created for prologue and minilogue xd. These waveforms can be easily re-shaped and adjusted just by simply turning a couple of knobs.

A wide selection of filters (Low pass 2/4-pole, High pass 2/4-pole, Band pass 2/4-pole and OPEN mode, all with resonance) give you serious control over the overall tone of the oscillator.

The three onboard effects units are inspired by those on KORG’s minilogue xd, which itself took onboard effects to a whole new level. Numerous reverbs, modulation effects, and delays are available to blend and edit at will, to really finish out your sound creations.

NTS-1 also offers a fun and practical arpeggiator with several patterns available. Scales and numerous note orders including a Random mode are also available to create new and original ideas on the fly. The pattern length can be adjusted (from 1 to 24 steps) and, when synced externally, the step duration can also be adjusted (16th to 64th notes)

Thanks to its ribbon controller, simple interface and display, the NTS-1 can be played and enjoyed very intuitively. Deeper parameter changes are also possible with several combinations of buttons / knobs, furthering the possibilities. Don’t let its size fool you; NTS-1 goes deep but keeps it all easily accessible.

Customize the experience

The fun isn’t over after you finish building the NTS-1. The screws on the side panels are long enough to let you easily attach custom side panels.

Get creative and use the NTS-1 in a wide variety of setups. Equipped with AUDIO IN, SYNC IN, SYNC OUT and MIDI IN connectors, the NTS-1 can easily be used in combination with other hardware and software.

You can control it using external MIDI controllers and sequencers, use it to modify and audio signal with its powerful digital effects, or even sync it to other hardware and jam along!

It’s also USB micro-B powered so you can plug it directly to a portable battery and take it anywhere with you! You can also connect to your computer’s USB port or directly to the power supply using a standard USB power plug.

Free bundle of music software

The NTS-1 comes with a diverse variety of music software from Izotope including 'Ozone Elements' which lets you not only create songs but also master them using AI, 'Skoove' which will help you improve your keyboard playing skills, 'Reason Lite' DAW software, as well as software synths from KORG and other brands.

In other words, the moment you get your hands on this synthesizer you'll have a variety of tools to help you take your music to the next level."

Korg ds-10 syncing the korg nts-1, the teenage engineering op-z & ipad: Setup, settings & tutorial

michaelnervous

"Using the Korg ds-10 as a clock source I show you how to setup and sync the ds-10 to the korg nts-1 and the teenage engineering OP-Z (as well as the ipad app for the op-z -motion Graphics).
by making a click track and sending that audio signal into the sync in of the nts-1 and then having the nts-1 send a midi clock signal to the op-z.

And if you are using the iphone/ipad op-z app you then have video in sync to the ds-10 also.
The great thing here is you can basically turn the audio clock source from the Korg ds-10 into midi data and use with ipad apps or an external synth.

Korg Monologue, MicroFreak, Novation Circuit, Volca FM, NTS-1, Lone Rider part 3

Waveformer

All parts here.

"Third and final part of a three-part jam, featuring the Korg Monologue, Arturia MicroFreak, Novation Circuit, Volca FM, and with Zoom MS-70CDR and Korg NTS-1 on effects.

My music on Bandcamp: http://waveformer42.bandcamp.com/

See the two previous videos for part 1 and 2. The tree jams use the same instruments and effects, but with different themes.

The Monologue is used for 3 solo parts - one bright synth-y lead in the beginning, one grumpy distorted lead sound in the middle, and one theremin-like sound at the end. All based on the same custom patch, but with modified envelope, oscillator mix and filter to give each solo a unique character.

The MicroFreak is doing chords with a simple super saw patch and lots of chorus, delays and reverb from the MS70. In the section from 7:30 to 9:30, I'm using a nice "trick" to get from a C minor to a Eb minor in a smooth way. I go from Eb to G7, and then to B diminished 7 (just move the low G note a half step up to a G sharp), and then on to Bb7 (move the B one half step down to a Bb). The Bb7 is the dominant chord for an Eb minor, so the transition to Eb minor feels very natural. To my ear, all these transitions feel very smooth, and still we end up on a Eb minor chord three half steps from the C minor root. And the G minor note in the Eb minor chord is definitely not in the C minor scale. It's even a tritone. The diminished 7th chord of a scale is a very nice gateway to other scales. If you're in C (major or minor) scale, you can use the B diminished chord to go to Eb, to Gb and to A - minor or major. All of these are just a half step up from a note in the diminished chord, so the tension in the diminished chord resolves nicely to any of these.

Why to Love the Korg NTS-2 Oscilloscope (spoiler: because it's WAY more than just a scope)

video upload by Rochefsky

"On my modular eurorack system I take my oscilloscope / tuner for granted - and on my desktop synths I really needed a similar solution. I always need a tuner, I often want to see the shape of the audio or LFO modulation waves I'm using, I also often want to check the voltage outputs of certain CV signals - and with my semi-modulars - like the Moog Mother-32 or Grandmother synth, I could really use a secondary LFO for modulation - and I'm not always near my eurorack system for that.
The Korg NTS-2 Oscilloscope has become my perfect answer. It was a $229 kit (including a beautiful $45 hardcover book...) and does all of the above with loads of options.
In this video I'm just giving an overview of most of the features in case you're considering it and want a walkthrough before you buy.
Here's what's in the video:
0:00 - intro
1:07 - inputs/outputs
2:15 - controls
2:45 - modes
3:05 - Scope
6:00 - Wave Generator
9:20 - FFT / Spectrum
10:25 - Tuner
11:38 - Global Settings
12:10 - surprise.

Using an #oscillator is a great learning tool and a sound design tool - and the Korg NTS-2 not only gives you that, but so much more."

Korg NTS-1 Custom Oscillator Dev: Basic Phase Distortion Analysis

videos upload by Graham Keane

Update: new videos added.

"This simple program will serve as the basis for implementing the Vector Phaseshaping technique as outlined by Lazzarini, Timoney et al."

Playlist demos:

1. Korg NTS-1 Custom Oscillator Dev: Basic Phase Distortion Analysis
In this short video we will have a quick examination of the output of the classic phase distortion technique implemented on the Korg NTS-1 Nu:Tekt digital synthesizer. This technique produces a non-linear phase distortion of a basic cosine waveform.
2. Korg NTS-1 Custom Oscillator Dev: Filtered Phase Distortion Analysis
In this short video we will have a quick examination of the output of the filtered phase distortion program implemented on the Korg NTS-1 Nu:Tekt digital synthesizer. This technique produces a non-linear phase distortion of a basic cosine waveform which has pitch-tracked filters to tackle some of the aliasing.
3. Korg NTS-1 Custom Oscillator Dev: Basic Vector Phaseshaping (VPS) Analysis
In this short video we will have a quick examination of the output of the basic Vector Phaseshaping technique implemented on the Korg NTS-1 Nu:Tekt digital synthesizer. This technique uses a 2D inflection point to modulate the phase of a cosine waveform.
4. Korg NTS-1 Custom Oscillator Dev: Interpolated VPS Analysis
In this short video we will have a quick examination of the output of the interpolated Vector Phaseshaping (VPSI) technique implemented on the Korg NTS-1 Nu:Tekt digital synthesizer. This technique utilises pitch-tracked filters to combat aliasing as well as linear interpolation to reduce the effects of abrupt jumps in the phase due to skipped intervals in the inflection point's range.
5. Korg NTS-1 Custom Oscillator Dev: Formant Synthesis with VPS - Analysis
In this short video we will have a quick examination of the output of Formant Synthesis in the Vector Phaseshaping technique implemented on the Korg NTS-1 Nu:Tekt digital synthesizer. This technique uses a 2D inflection point to modulate the phase of a cosine waveform which generates formant peaks over certain ranges.
6. Korg NTS-1 Custom Oscillator Dev: Formant Synthesis via VPS with Interpolation Gain - Analysis
In this short video we will have a quick examination of the output of the Formant Synthesis through Vector Phaseshaping technique implemented on the Korg NTS-1 Nu:Tekt digital synthesizer. This particular version uses an interpolation gain to scale two separate VPS signals which are then linearly mixed to produce the main signal. The final signal is processed with pitch-tracked filters and an additional linear interpolation process to reduce the impact of gaps in the inflection points path which give rise to abrupt phase shifts.
7. Korg NTS-1 Custom Oscillator Dev: VPS with Multiple Inflection Points (MVPS) - Analysis
In this short video we will have a quick examination of the output of the Vector Phaseshaping technique with Multiple Inflection Points implemented on the Korg NTS-1 Nu:Tekt digital synthesizer.
8. Korg NTS-1 Custom Oscillator Dev: VPS with Lissajous Modulation - Analysis
In this short video we will demonstrate the output of the Vector Phaseshaping technique with Lissajous Modulation implemented on the Korg NTS-1 Nu:Tekt digital synthesizer.
9. Korg NTS-1 Custom Oscillator Dev: Multi-Vector Phaseshaping Synthesis (MVPS) Analysis
In this short video we will demonstrate the output of the Multi-Vector Phaseshaping Synthesis technique implemented on the Korg NTS-1 Nu:Tekt digital synthesizer. This technique uses a 3-2D inflection points to modulate the phase of a cosine waveform, which can produce interesting shapes as a result.

Quick Build of the Korg NTS-2 Oscilloscope and example of scoping a simple bass line beat

video upload by Rochefsky

"I acquired the Korg NTS-1 Oscilloscope in an Amazon special which came with the book 'Patch and Tweak' - so figured I'd film the building process and immediately follow with a sample use scoping the background bass line beat to this video.

The scope is quite useful for my non-eurorack gear because:
- I can move it around easily
- it runs on batteries (2 AA)
- it has 2 inputs and thru ports
- it has a TUNER (!!)
- it is TINY!

loads more features than I tested so far... happy to try some for viewers who have specific questions..."

Savage - Boutique's: SH-01A / TB-03 / TR-09 +

Micro Banshee

"The TB-03 and TR-09 are both utilising track write and play mode with the drums and bass programmed for the track duration. The two SH-01A's are playing several accompanying sequence's during the track - with FX from the Korg NTS-1, the MyVolts mickXer is used for the input of the two SH-01A's and the Zoom H1 is being used as a pre-amp for the mickXer.

The PO-33 is direct to mix in on the TB-03, the TB-03 is direct to mix in the TR-09, with the Korg mini KP-2 adding a little reverb onto both of these.

Everything is input to both channels on the Tascam DP-004 recorder.

As always, the track is played 'live' in one take - with no DAW, editing or post production.

Charlottenburg, Live Ambient Impro, Wavestate, MicroFreak v3, Volca Drum, Monologue

video by Waveformer

"In this live improvised jam, I introduce the Wavestate to some old and new friends - MicroFreak, Monologue, Volca Drum, Novation Circuit, 3 Zoom MS-70CDRs and Korg NTS-1. The only prerecorded sequence is the drums on Volca Drum. The rest of the jam is live playing and active use of the arpeggiators on the Wavestate and MicroFreak. The recorded video is annotated with some notes about the performance.

During the jam, I let each synth/layer have a solo part where it is up front and center - the MicroFreak, the Monologue and the two arp parts and the pad part on the Wavestate. I try to think of them as different members of a band.

My music on Bandcamp: http://waveformer42.bandcamp.com/

The Wavestate patch/performance is a slightly modified version of "WF Charlottenburg" and is a part of the "Berlin School and Ambient Construction Kit" available here: https://gumroad.com/waveformer.

It has four layers - 2 arpeggiators, one arpeggiated bass and one pad. I added some inharmonic wavesamples to steps 9-16 of the pad sample wavesequence, moved around a few notes and rests on the timing lanes for the two arps, added some octave shifts to the pitch sequences, and some ratcheting to one of the arps.

During the jam, I play around with the wavesequence lanes for all the four layers - timing lane to change rhythm, sample lane to vary the wavesamples, pitch lane to add some octave changes to some notes, shape to add ratcheting, and gate to add some variation to note length. The wavesequence loop lengths are different from lane to lane, creating interesting polymeter effects. I also modify pan, filter cutoff, envelope decay and reverb mix through the jam.

Korg Nu:Tekt NTS-1 synthesizer effects with Volca Keys, jamming and experimenting

Published on Feb 1, 2020 Expanding Sound

http://www.expandingsound.com

"I decided to try something a little different this time. I pulled an excerpt from the full video and put it at the beginning as I thought it sounded pretty. I think it showcases how much atmosphere this little NTS-1 can add to a very simple sounding synth or instrument, like a very straightforward setting on my Volca Keys. After the little 2 minute ambient excerpt the full exploration of the effect section of the NTS-1 begins. I created a quick little sequence and started manipulating the effects, just trying things out. Ive only owned the NTS-1 for a couple days, and even if it didn't come with the digital mono synth I think it would be worth the money. the effects are beautiful and I'm going to have a lot of fun running all kinds of different sources through it."
