Making Ambient With the Norand Mono (and friends)

video upload by Red Means Recording

"I got the idea recently that the pure analog tones of the Norand Mono would sound lovely through some effects. From there I cooked up an ambient patch using the Hapax, Peak, and Eurorack. Let me walk you through the patch and how it works."

Norand Mono INHALT Multitrack Demo

video upload by INHALTVIDEO

"Norand is a new French synthesizer manufacturer. Mono is their debut synth that I've been commissioned to do a sound library for. In the process of doing so, I put together a demo song wherein every sound is sequenced and generated on the Mono entirely. Every single sequence and sound, including drums was made on the Mono (yes the chords too). Pretty impressive stuff for a "compact" 303 inspired synth ...

And while it may appear to be inspired by the 303 it's actually an amalgamation of "things". Working on this synth, took me back the the 90s, when I read Future Music magazine. During that 303 clone craze time, the king was the Future Retro 777, and in many regards the Mono brings up a bit of a design vibe from that. While the 777 was, to my ears a cross between a Sequential Pro One and 303 there is something about it that the Mono spiritually continues. Similarly, the Mono does have all the provisions that a 303 has (especially on the sequencer front) but then it updates it with pretty much all the modern facilities an Elektron box would have.

The Mono is a kind of 21st century bridge between the best of the past and the best of the now. The sound of the actual machine is much more vintage in character than most modern synths but the way you play and manipulate and sequence that sound is firmly 21st century with the vibe and some charming idiosyncrasies of the 303 sequencer. Don't sleep on this one, it's an absolute winner.

Multi-tracked and mixed entirely on an AMS Neve 8424 console with some fx processing (light reverb and delay) from a Lexicon 480l. Filmed and produced at Infinite Power Studios, Los Angeles, CA."

Erica Synths x Sonic Potions LXR-02 & Norand Mono with Empress Reverb

video upload by Nightlife Electronics

https://nightlife-electronics.com/

"Here we have a lovely little Acid workout courtesy of the Norand MONO and Erica Synths x Sonic Potions LXR-02.

The Norand MONO is stretched and pulled into all kinds of familiar but fresh SH-101 style melodic Acid territory, all while the LXR-02 provides a hefty backbone of digital rhythm.

Both of these devices are similar in that they reward you for going deep into the depths and there are more than a few tricks hidden up the sleeves once you get there. Infectious rhythms and funky basslines are no sweat, from either box! Is it a synth or a drum machine? It's both!

A splash of ambience from the Empress Reverb just to finish it off and we are rolling!

All three available at Nightlife Electronics: https://nightlife-electronics.com/

Norand Mono MKII Unique Hybrid Mono - Sonic LAB Review

video upload by sonicstate

"We're looking at the Norand Mono MKII, we first saw this at Superbooth earlier in the year and were impressed with the unique approach to modulation.
The analog oscillators and 3 pole filter are at the heart of the sound, and in addition, there's an FPGA processor that allows for complex manipulation and routing of the control voltages.

Sonically, its a great synthesis playground even though there are some quirky areas - for instance bi-polar square wave mod of Oscillator pitch will rarely reach perfect intervals due to the calibration required to reach the impressive 7/8Octaves of key tracking.

Currently available prices at around £749/839 Euros

Playing the Norand Mono as a "normal" synth (no talking)

video upload by Richard DeHove

"The power of the Norand Mono is in its incredible modulation and its per-step automation. But that ultimately doesn't mean much unless there's a good basic sound. So here are 16 custom sounds played live as you would with a "normal" synth, meaning just noodling with a single sound and a keyboard. I've added a little Valhalla delay and tried to balance the volume, but otherwise there's no other processing.

In reality you'd probably use these sounds as a starting point for a Norand sequence, changing filter, wave, LFO and envelope settings from step to step making for a much more dynamic performance. But I thought it might be useful to hear the Mono in a more raw form as a standard synth.

Norand Mono : first jam

video by Masaki Takada

"Norand Mono is a brand new monophonic analog synthesizer.
It looks like a 303 clone, but there are possibilities for sequences and sound creation that go beyond them.
In this video, I used a function called "Mod Note Mode" to play Mono like a drum machine."

Eleven and Nine - Jam Session

video upload by ollilaboratories

"If you like my music you can find more over here http://bit.ly/BurgMusic

##

Hi everyone !

After a very long hiatus I am starting to feel a bit alive and ready for some BURG minimal jam sessions. Starting slowly with this playful and (sort of dubby) minimal tune where the Norand Mono has 11 step pattern and the Avalon Bassline a 9 step pattern. It takes a long time for these two loops to align and play the same thing twice so it helps to create this dynamic movement which i enjoy very much... I am more or less letting the synths play their own stuff and enjoying the ride.

This is all connected together with no mixer, Norand and Avalon into L+R in on the analog four, analog four into L+R on the digitakt. The digitakt has some compression on the stereo bus out and recorded directly into a Zoom H5 stereo track. Limiter has been added in post to even out the peak/levels a bit.

I hope that you will enjoy this one!

Gear Used:
** Elektron Digitakt ( Kick and percussion )
** Elektron Analog Four ( sequences and drones + FX for the Norand and Avalon )
** Avalon Bassline ( square 9 step pattern )
** Norand Mono ( Heavily Modulated 11 step bass pattern )

Introducing Norand Mono MK2

video upload by Norand

"Unveiling the new version of our beloved monosynth!
More info, and availability : https://norand.io/monomk2"

PUSHING THE ENVELOPE WITH MK2

Mono was always meant to be the ultimate monophonic synthesiser. After 3 years of existence and hundreds of exchanges with our vibrant community of users, it felt logical to work on a new hardware version, capable of handling the many new features we have in mind.

Analog overdrive and refined analog path
MK2 implement 4 years of internal update over our appraised discrete analog path, with the addition of a custom soft overdrive circuit at the output, multiplying mono’s sonic abilities.

Expressive 3D Keyboard
MK2 introduces 3D sensors for the mini-keyboard, allowing for expressive controls over each notes. Velocity, aftertouch, pitch bend, and vertical modulation are possible directly on the keyboard.

Continuous sequencer strip
3D sensors are also used for the sequencer and page keys, which allow for dozens of new musical features, like live play-head, multi-pattern morphing, and precise control over the patterns.

High resolution automation
MK2 uses a 1024 PPQN sequencer system, which allow automations to be recorded at a very-high definition with the knobs and keys. The 3D sequencer strip allow for precise creation and edition of these automation using curve mode.

Full machined alluminum body
Your voice has been heard! MK2 was redesigned with a full machined aluminium body. A lot of attention was given to every details.

Tons of interface improvement
A full row of button has been added to reflect the improvement made on the software over the years. All the LEDs are now RGB, with smart color coding for a clearer interface.

Norand Mono and a DB-01 - noodlings (no talking)

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Both the Norand Mono and the Erica Synths DB-01 are best known for furiously zipping along through 16-step patterns, although both can easily move into very different realms. While fiddling with the filter and resonance on the Norand (and applying envelopes separately to both) I came across an interesting effect where they sometimes seem to split off into two voices. I couldn't quite decide whether it was spooky, or had a sort of Arabian flavor. The DB-01 seemed a natural fit so I added a very simple drone-mode pattern. Both machines have an added touch of Valhalla delay in Reaper but are otherwise as you see them here.
