Novation Launchpad Pro MK3 standalone control of synths and modules - r . a d i a t o r 2 - CALC-

Published on Feb 21, 2020 -CALC-

"Here the Launchpad Pro MK3 is firmly in the driving seat.

In standalone mode it is sequencing a Rossum Electro Assimil8or, Novation Summit and the Beatsqueezer. It's also a control surface for the Octatrack

Featuring:

Novation Summit - Sequenced by the Launchpad Pro feat. a wonderful Multi patch from the incredible r Beny

Rossum Electro Panharmonium - Fed some food from an aux on the mixer and Morphagene

Rossum Electro Assimil8or - Sequenced from the Launchpad Pro via a fine CV.OCD

Beatsqueezer - Sequenced by the Launchpad Pro feat. a fine sampled Una Chorda from a furry friend.

Elektron Octatrack - being controlled by the Launchpad Pro's custom modes Launchpad Pro is a super cool controller as well as sequencer.

Novation SL MKIII - First Forays - The first track ever created on the SL MKIII?

Published on Oct 25, 2018 -CALC-

"Here is an early video made pre-announcement of the SL MKIII being used in the -CALC- Studio back in Sept '18.

I think this is the first ever full track created on the device. It was made whilst the final firmware was still being cooked up by the geniuses at Novation Towers.

The track was made using a early, non-finished firmware and is using just one session of the 64 available. In fact this firmware was before we got automation and even sequencer part mutes.... I ended up using empty patterns as part mutes!!!

Longer sequencers than the 128 steps available on each part (NB - not just 16 steps internet land!) are achieved by dividing the clock speeds. eg The different Arp 2600 bass lines are across 2 patterns each with a quarter speed clock.

This is based on a hybrid set-up using a little bit of Ableton (Just 3 looped clips) and that wonderful and free Spitfire Audio Labs Soft Piano driven from the SL MKIII's powerful arpeggiator.

The SL is directly sequencing the ARP2600 from the CV gate outputs. MIDI is also sent to the Preen FM, Peak, Leploop and the Roland SP404 processed through the fantastic Oto Boum (was still learning how to use that little box at the time too!)

One thing the SL MK III does really well is open up great opportunities to use plug-ins from software but still keeping the focus, control and composition process directly on the SL Hardware. It really is a hub of the studio and joins all of these worlds perfectly together whilst still giving you an "instrument" to play.

Also having keys in front of you and your sequencer feels genuinely incredible!!!

Hope y'all like it

Novation SL MKIII Studio Performance -CALC- “Pez River”

Published on Oct 11, 2018 -CALC-

"Here's a little ditty composed and performed on the powerful Novation SL MKIII sequencer/Controller keyboard.
The SL is controlling an ARP 2600, Juno 106, Korg Poly61 M (running through a DIY phaser Mmmmm), SH101 + 0Coast and Yamaha Reface CP alongside the Elektron Octatrack and OTO Boum. Leploop is also connected to clock from the SL MKIII.

Theres 3 drum tracks and a couple of nice Spitfire audio Labs (free plug-ins) providing Strings and Charanga guitar sounds.

It a true hybrid Hardware/Computer combo, Ableton Live is clocking everything through the SL and all the musical elements (bar Ableton's Strings and Charanga guitar parts) are being sequenced by the SL MKIII directly.
My favourite bit is towards the Middle when the Peak has a nice rhythmic Bass line on a monster patch. I called the patch Pez River for some reason and so that's the name of the track.

I have to say that I have fallen completely in love with the SL MKIII workflow, the ability to sequence everything directly from a flagship keyboard is incredible and genuinely music feels so much easier to write now somehow!"

OTO Machines BOUM Now Available for Pre-Orders - New Sound Demos

This one in via swissdoc

The third of OTO Machines FX boxesannounced in 2014, the OTO BOUM, is now available for pre-order.

"BOUM is a full analog stereo warming unit, combining an easy-to-use compressor, a versatile distortion generator and a smooth low-pass filter. BOUM is the perfect tool when you need to add warmth, thickness, and character to your sounds, but also apply severe distortion and extreme compression treatments.

BOUM is based on an original and unique circuit, including the following stages :

INPUT GAIN : boost your signal up to +18db to adapt BOUM to various signal levels, and also improve the distortion content and the compression sensitivity.

COMPRESSOR : with a single knob, control the 3 essential parameters of a compressor, threshold, ratio and makeup gain, without thinking about how a compressor works ! The ratio ranges from 1:1 (no compression) to inf. :1 (limiter), but also negative compression up to 1: -1!

"BIM - Poetic Repeater
12-bit delay (up to 2 seconds in stereo) with modulation (several waveforms available), separate hipass & lowpass filters for the delay signal and the feedback path, extra FXs (Reverse, Flanger, Dual Head, Distortion,...).
True 12-bit converters, filters, compander & feedback paths are analog for a very warm and grainy sound.
TAP and FREEZE function. Delay can be synced to MIDI Clock.

BAM - Space Generator
Digital reverberator inspired by the early 80's 16-bit units (EMT250, Lexicon 224,...). Several algorithms including Halls, Rooms, Space, weirdos, springs, resonators...
Predelay is up to 1 second. A "Drive" pot let you distort the input of the reverb.

BOUM - Warming Unit
Analog Compressor with tube emulation, octave, soft and hard distortion, followed by a 3 mode-2 pole Biscuit filter.
The compressor have Mode, Attack and Release settings.
An envelope generator (normal or inverse) let's you create envelope filters or envelope levelers.
The distortion circuit is specially designed for synths, loops, drums,...and keeps the dynamic of the signal.

All units have stereo I/O, MIDI input (CCs for all parameters, Beat Clock, Pgm Change), true hardware relay bypass, 36 user presets.
Size is 145 x 145 x 60 mm. 2 lines of 8 white LEDS for displaying parameters, preset number, input vu-meter...

Price for each unit will be about 325 euros (excluding VAT).
Release is planned for 2014 Q4."
