Steiner Parker

Absolutely amazing shot of a Steiner Parker system sent my way via Rolf Eichert. Image link takes you to a slightly bigger shot. Title link takes you to the full size shot. Thanks Rolf!

Update from Rolf:
"It is only now - when i have a look at other systems -that the concept really becomes clear. Professional Sound, Bakalit Potis like on the Moogs with enough rooms for tweaking. multiple inputs and outputs for most of the modules. You hardly need any multiples for splitting up outputs and VCO, VCF, VCA all have several inputs so you don`t need mixers. You never have to think "how do i patch it?" Just get going.
THIS is a very BIG difference to all the systems i have seen since!"

Module list

Steiner Parker Synthasystem

1 VCO Type A Sine/Tri/Saw/Square PWM and Hardsysnc
2 VCO Type B Sine/Saw Hardsync
1 VCO Type C TRI Hardsync (mostly vibrato though)

Analog Dance Modular Session

video upload by Andreas Remshagen

"a 'Maxi-Version' of a rhythm-based jam with some of my new components i have built. The devices are:
- Orchestrion Strings/Choir Synth (Described in previous Video)
- Analog Drumbox with 4 DS7-Clones and two Noise-based HiHats
(The Drumbox is either driven by the "Trigger-Randomizer"-Module"-its an arduino-based 5-Channel Randomgenerator in combination with 5 analog AND-Gates connected with a random-signal and the clock-signal for each Gate and each Gate is for a Drum. In this song the HiHat and the two analog Congas are in Random. So there are additionally Fill-ins to the normal static rhythm)
-Bass-Synth 2.0 (two Saw/Sine VCOs with Steiner-Parker VCF, YuSynth
Metalizer and Akzentuator
-Elektor Formant
-Analog Groovebox (Described in previous Video)

Vintage Rare Steiner Parker Synthacon Silverface Analog Synth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Update: check out demos of a Synthacon here, here, here, and here.

"Up for auction is this super rare circa 1975 Steiner Parker Synthacon. This is the earlier, silverface, monophonic version of this legendary synth that you'd be lucky to see for sale once a year. One of the few synths that truly deserves the title of "rare". I was able to create some jaw dropping sounds and I know I haven't even scratched the surface of what this synth can do.

The Synthacon is a 3 oscillator fully analog synthesizer. To the unfamiliar eye it looks a lot like the control panel for an aircraft. But this is one powerful synth that is capable of producing sounds a Minimoog would only dream of.

Each oscillator can be modulated in a variety of ways, including LFO, EG1, EG2, VCF, and sample-and-hold. It also has a pink and white noise generator. This synth is also known for having one of the best filters ever designed - it is super crunchy and the modulation routing is top notch. You can of course, get polyphonic sounds by blending the oscillators like most analog synths.

This synth has 49 keys w/ controls for Tune, Scale, Portamento, Range Select (8 octave range), and pitch bend.

You also have your other basic controls for attack, decay, sustain, and release, trigger rate, and sample and hold level."

Synthwave Astrophotography Adventures

video upload by Jeremy Parker

"My love of astrophotography and synthesizers has combined forces once again in my latest collection of images put to music. This journey through the cosmos represents almost 60 individual processed images/videos, each of which may be comprised of hundreds of exposures! The sounds were from the Arturia Polybrute, Korg OPSIX / OPSIX native VST, Korg miniKORG 700fs VST and Addictive Drums II.

Much of the imaging was done at my favorite dark sky site, the Pemigewasset Overlook in Lincoln, NH. But many of the long total exposure deep-space images came from home under my light pollution with the astro camera and filters. I listed some of the dorky details below:

Scope: StellarVue SV102T, SFFX1 flattener, Gerd Neumann CTU, MoonLite NiteCrawler
Mount: Explore Scientific PMC-Eight G11, Spring-loaded OPWB on DEC, O-Vision Worm on RA
Cameras: QHY600 & QHYCFW3-L w/Chroma LRGB & 3nm Ha/OIII/SII, Nikon D5300 H-alpha mod, Nikon Z6, GoPro Hero8 Black
Lenses: Nikon Z 14-24mm f/2.8, Sigma 135mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art

Well Refined Cyberpunk Blade Runner Sci fi Music (Korg Minilogue XD Ambient)

video upload by PARKER

"As the many ideas for my 100th video swept around my head, in the end it just made sense for me to return to my synth roots in order to celebrate just how far I've come as a synthesist, composer, and improviser of music.

This, the Blade Runner style saw waves sound is where it all began for me. Both as a synth player and as a YouTuber. Way back when I first started filming with my XD you can see my cover of the Blade Runner 'Main Theme' by Vangelis. This video is an improvisation using a Blade Runner style patch that I made fresh and you can hear just how much thicker, refined, and better created it is through my few years of experience. Clearly my knowledge in this time has only gotten bigger and what better way to celebrate this than by showing how far I've come since the original video."

Minilogue through Microbrute Filter- and a Roland Tape Delay - TR8

Published on Feb 27, 2016 Earmonkey Music

KORG minilogues on eBay | Korg minilogues on Amazon
MicroBrutes on eBay | MicroBrutes on Amazon

"NOTE--THERE are lots of extreme volume fluctuations here. Sorry about that. But just be careful if you're listening on headphones.... SO...I had a request to demo what the Minilogue sounds like through the Microbrute Steiner-Parker filter. My take on it? It sounds bad ass. Like a Bad Ass Boss. I start simple in the video, as usual. Just one square wave from the Minilogue with no modulation at all, running into the audio input of the Microbrute. I tried to sweep the filter with differing amounts of resonance and Brute Factor so you can see how the Microbrute filter affects the Minilogue.

After a bit of noodling, I started a simple sequence from the Minilogue and used the Micro's filter and sequencer. Simple drum pattern playing on the TR8. By using the sequencer, you get the envelope to modulate as well. Ideally, you'd have a Keyboard going in to the Micro to control the envelope with note-on, note-off info, but you get a very interesting delay type effect when you use the sequencer, and change the rate relative to the Minilogue.

I just can't seem to lay off the Roland RE-301 Space Echo, so you get some tape delay in this video as well. I felt like I should be auditioning for a Flock of Seagulls cover band at one point (you'll notice).

But I hope you enjoy this little demo. The Micro's Steiner Parker filter is much more aggressive than the Minilogue's and is a really nice complement to it"

New Catgirl Synth Steiner- Parker VCF

via this auction

"Multimode Analog Filter 5U MOTM Format
Did someone say acid? Sick resonance + Interpolating Scanner effect when the same sound is used on all the filter inputs. Why does every builder make one of these? Because it sounds so nasty!

I origianally built this for use in my modular. This is brand new and and fully tested. This will be the only one I have available so get it while you can.

You won't find a nicer version of this module. Every component is the highest quality available: BTI Conductive Plastic Pots, Switchcraft Jacks, Mil Spec RG-174 Coax on audio signals, Polyester Film Capacitors, etc. Excellent build quality. One mean filter. I am happy to be able to share this module with another synth enthusiast.

Front Panel Controls:
Frequency
Frequency CV Level
Frequency CV Input
Resonanace
High Pass Filter Input
High Pass Filter Level
Band Pass Filter Input
Band Pass FIlter Level
Low Pass Filter Input
Low Pass Filter Level
Output

Here is some additional information about the Steiner VCF from the CGS Website:

"This module is a "tribute" module, based on the awesome Steiner-Parker Synth VCF. Those who know me will know I'm not a big VCF fan. Nonetheless, this VCF really appeals to me. Its sound is quite unlike the Moog ladder, has a lot of character.

Resonance is a bit unusual in its behavior. Once it starts oscillating, the resonance pot needs to be backed off a fair way to get it to stop again. It can also be frequency dependent.

How to use this module:

Connect the CV input to a voltage source such as a keyboard, envelope generator or sequencer. Connect the output to a VCA or amplifier. Feed the signal to be filtered into the high-pass, band-pass or low-pass input.

Unlike the original, this version allows signals to be fed into all inputs simultaneously. If the same signal is used in all inputs, the result is reminiscent of a phaser. The real fun starts when you feed different signals into each input, then you get a frequency based "interpolating scanner", where panning between different sound sources is possible, though also subject to the frequency at which they are running. I have never heard an effect like it before." - Ken Stone"

Steiner Parker Analog Synthesizer Module

"This auction is for an incredible rare vintage (1970's) Steiner Parker Analog Synthesizer Module in good condition. I believe these were used in guitar synthesis back in the 70s, but they could be used for any modular synthesizer purpose. They have 1/8" mini jacks, like ARP or DOEPFER synths but easy to adapt to 1/4" etc. Simple but powerful features. Oscillator, Filter, Envelope Gen, LFO included. There is a 6-way Cinch Jones jack on it - but I do not know why, as we have no manual for this. It has not been tested. It also has an AC cord, two prong plug, attached..."

Arturia MicroBrute SE Demo - 15th anniv.

Published on Oct 15, 2014 keyboardmag1

"Arturia MicroBrute SE Demo - 15th anniv."

Update and the official press release:

"Arturia makes colourful analogue waves with massive-sounding SE edition of miniature MicroBrute

'This mighty little machine runs the gamut from metallic, brutal bass to velvety bleepy, bloopy goodness — sheer joy to play. The single oscillator is wildly diverse — wait ’til you meet the Metalizer and Ultrasaw, and I love the SEQUENCER and MOD MATRIX — very inspiring!'

- Tara Busch (I Speak Machine, 2014)

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware company Arturia is proud to announce availability of MicroBrute SE — a ‘special edition’ of its widely-acclaimed MicroBrute Analog Synthesizer, available in a choice of three tempting colours to suit whatever playful mood might make anyone’s musical day, be it Christmas or otherwise — as of October 15...

Arturia’s award-winning MiniBrute Analog Synthesizer rapidly reset the price/performance ratio benchmark when soaring through the subtractive synthesis sound barrier upon being launched in 2012 to much critical acclaim and subsequent success. Afterwards, Arturia built upon that success last year when introducing a ‘special edition’ of its namesake sibling, the MiniBrute SE, sharing the same physical footprint, but building upon this amazingly compact and bijou analogue monosynth in both looks and features. That same year, Arturia adventurously took the ‘shrinking synth’ concept one step further with its equally big-sounding little-brother, the MicroBrute Analog Synthesizer, an even smaller semi-modular monosynth with inbuilt step sequencer, boasting MIDI, USB, and CV connectivity with a whole host of unique features — guaranteed to bring big smiles to go with those massive sounds! Similarly, today the MicroBrute has been given the ‘special edition’ treatment to become the MicroBrute SE — same physical footprint and full feature set! So what’s with those colours? Blue, orange, or white, they all sound the same... that is to say, sounds massive. But who’s to say you can’t make a bold style statement with a massive-sounding synthesizer, however small it may be? Thanks to the colourful MicroBrute SE, now you can!

But beneath those colourful, compact and bijou bonnets resides a living and breathing, fully-fledged analogue synthesizer that belies its diminutive dimensions and is actually anything but basic. For starters, just like its MiniBrute SE bigger brother, the OSCILLATOR that beats at its musical heart features SAW, TRIANGLE, and SQUARE waveforms that are all mixable to help shape the resulting sound without the limitations imposed by comparable contemporary and vintage synths alike. Additionally, the new Overtone oscillator generates additional harmonic content, ranging from one octave down to a fifth above the base OSCILLATOR pitch, while the Sub > Fifth control can continuously sweep spectrum. Moreover, Metalizer adds complex harmonics to the TRIANGLE waveform for creating harsh, harmonically-rich sounds, while Ultrasaw adds a lively and bright ensemble effect to the SAWTOOTH waveform — perfect for crafting sounds suited to dance anthems. And let’s not forget the all-important Pulse Width control for creating nasal-thin tones or rich square sounds. Simply speaking, never before has such a small, single-oscillator synth sounded so big... or looked so good!

Of course, filtering helps shape any analogue synth’s sound — be it big or small, and here the MicroBrute SE definitely does not disappoint. Indeed, its distinctive-sounding Steiner-Parker FILTER plays a big part in helping give the MicroBrute SE a unique sound — again, just like its big brother. This filter design dates back to the Steiner-Parker Synthacon, an analogue monosynth built by the namesake Salt Lake City-based synth manufacturer between 1975 and 1979. Its HP (high-pass), BP (bandpass), and LP (lowpass) modes make for far more filtering flexibility than that found in synths many times the price! And that’s before factoring Arturia’s acclaimed Brute FactorTM into the musical equation, adding anything from subtle overdrive to full-blown intermodulation havoc — choose your settings, and let the fun begin!

Speaking of having fun, the eight-Pattern step SEQUENCER is an almost endless source of inspiration and rhythmic creativity — step input notes and rests to create storable sequences that can be played back and switched between on the fly at a variable Rate or synchronised to external MIDI clock. Meanwhile, MIDI, USB, and CV GATE connectivity, of course, combine to ensure that the MicroBrute SE is ready and willing to talk to the outside electronic musical instrument world, wherever it may find itself. It’s even blessed with an external audio Input with an adjustable Input Level control, so why not use it to process whatever you feel like sticking into its 1/4-inch socket — within reason, of course!

The front panel-mounted MOD MATRIX moreover allows adventurous users to control many aspects of the MicroBrute SE’s massive-sounding single voice for different internal sources, as well as controlling them via external synths and modules. MicroBrute SE comes complete with two stackable jack cables for that very purpose. Preset sheets also come as standard, so no need to worry about forgetting those adventurous sound settings!

With a space-saving 25-note mini-keyboard and weighing in at only 1.75kg, the MicroBrute SE is as compact as it is colourful, yet positively punches well above its weight with a rip-roaring analogue sound spanning woofer-flapping bass, screaming leads, ear-opening effects, wave-folded growls, punchy drum sounds galore, and much in-between and beyond. Pick one — or even all three — up from an authorised Arturia dealer or retailer today! To make this perfectly portable package even more portable, Arturia has helpfully included a stylish carry bag guaranteed to turn heads wherever the stylish synth goes. Go ahead. Make a bold style statement while making a massive sound!

A ‘limited’ run of 4,000 MicroBrute SE units are available for purchase in a choice of three tempting colours through Arturia’s global network of dealers and retailers for €329.00 EUR/$329.00 USD.

DIY analog synth project (Steiner Parker "Type" VCF The Final Tweak)

Published on Nov 7, 2017 Adamski Ajull

"Hey guys back again with yet another modified Stiener Parker type 12db per oct VCF, this based on a mashup of Ken stone and Yves Ussons schematics.
I have increased the diode ladder from 10-12, and also the size of the capacitors in the ladder and also my own tailored trimming for keyboard tracking.
There is also a trimmerble diode pair in the resonance network , which can at some points sound like a nice distortion pedal and tames the wild resonance. i have also changed values in the Freq Cut and Res potentiometers resistance to ground to compensate for the bigger change in top end content.
PLEASE USE HEADPHONES OR SPEAKERS TO CATCH THE LOW END PROPERLY ;-).
Again many thanks to Yves Usson and Ken Stone for their inspirational circuits."

STEINER-PARKER SYNTHACON MK1

"We are delighted to offer this rare and powerful Mk 1 Steiner-Parker Synthacon for sale in full working order.

FULLY OVERHAULED BY JAMES WALKER.

Commission sale. Offers invited.

It's become ever-harder to track down these elusive beasts, especially in Europe. Not only were very few made, those who have them tend not to want to part with them. Going on first appearances, you might ask what is so special about this handbuilt American three oscillator monosynth? On closer inspection, one's eye is drawn to the rows of colourful switches that control the clever modulation routing that is one of the features that makes this synth so appealing.

Nyle Steiner's original Mk1 Synthacon is monophonic, as opposed to the later duophonic Mk2 units: the earlier ones are said to have the edge sonically over. Certainly the reaction to the first demos we put on instagram has been one of considerable excitement at the noises coming out of this machine.

CONDITION: In good cosmetic condition for its age. There are some signs of age to the face, including small spots of oxidation and minor staining in places. Woodwork has some wear. See photos for more information on cosmetic condition.'

Arturia Announces Alluring MiniBrute SE Silver Dream Machine

"“Arturia did a great job of implementing my classic filter design. It’s nice to see my design being brought back to life in a quality product.”

- Nyle Steiner (electronic musical instrument designer)

[Note there was a silver version of the original Steiner Parker Synthacon as seen here.]

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware company Arturia is proud to launch MiniBrute SE — a ‘special edition’ of its amazing analogue monosynth par excellence — at Musikmesse 2014, March 12-15 in Frankfurt, Germany.

Arturia’s red-hot MiniBrute Analog Synthesizer set the electronic musical instrument world alight immediately upon its introduction in 2012. Indeed, it rapidly reset the price/performance ratio benchmark when successfully soaring through the subtractive synthesis sound barrier while singlehandedly setting a new standard for what a hardware synthesizer should be. Hot on its heels comes a ‘special edition’ that is very special indeed. MiniBrute SE shares the same physical footprint as the original MiniBrute, but builds upon this amazingly compact and bijou analogue monosynth in both looks and features.

Although a sturdy and stylish brushed aluminium casing with wooden sides surely make MiniBrute SE stand out from the analogue crowd, skin-deep good looks are not the be and end all here, however, as added functionality runs deeper still. An all-new step SEQUENCER elegantly expands playing options with the MiniBrute SE — six Pattern sequences with up to 64 steps each to create multiple musical phrases, to be precise. Yet it is capable of so much more than simply replaying pre- programmed Pattern sequences ad infinitum. Users can create new musical phrases from existing ones by changing the playback Mode, Gate Len (timing), and Swing settings in realtime from the clearly labelled front panel — perfect for inspiring new musical ideas and creating exciting live performances on the fly.

MiniBrute SE is proof positive that the original MiniBrute was no fly-by-night success story. A pure analogue signal path and attractive features like a multi-wave OSCILLATOR and Sub Osc combined with a huge-sounding Steiner-Parker multimode FILTER (fittingly revised by Nyle Steiner himself) and wide-ranging modulation capabilities confirm that MiniBrute SE continues to innovate while breathing new life into recordings and stage performances. Add fantastic features like Ultrasaw (generating shimmering sawtooth waveforms), Metalizer (adding extreme triangle waveform-induced harmonics), LFO (with sample and hold), and full USB/MIDI/CV connectivity into the musical mix, and what have you got? A killer-sounding, step sequencing-capable synth with looks to die for, that’s what!

Designed for the analogue purist with a creative spirit in mind, MiniBrute SE successfully squeezes an amazing amount of creative options into its eye-catching, exceptionally portable design. The truly hands-on artistic appeal of subtractive synthesis and supreme step sequencing are alive and kicking here — harder than ever! Indeed, it’s all about analogue goodness — all gain and no pain!

So stand out from the analogue crowd and make that silver dream a reality real quick with MiniBrute SE. No need for a reality check!

MiniBrute SE will be available to purchase at the end of May from the Arturia online store (http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/buy/online-shop.html)
or any authorised dealer for €549.00 EUR/$599.00 USD."

"Lost and Found" feat. Peter MacLean & Mike Tucker

video upload by Jeremy Parker

"This original composition features the incredible Peter MacLean (Maceo Parker) on drums and Mike Tucker (Arturo Sandoval) on tenor saxaphone as special guests. I wrote the core of this tune for the @rhodesmusic Missing Keys contest, as the backing track for James Smith's @YardActBand spoken word. I was spurred on by the challenge to write something specific, and I liked the vibe of what I came up with enough to finish it off as a complete song on its own. So I constructed some melodies, sax solo section and put an arrangement together for this special rendition with Peter and Mike sitting in, doing the magical things that they do.

I used my Rhodes MKIII EK10 which I restored a few years ago: [posted here]

Then I also used the Funk Bass sound from my Korg Opsix, a ring-mod solo lead I made on my miniKORG 700fs, and various sounds from my Arturia Polybrute.

Here's my original entry to the Rhodes Missing Keys contest, so you can hear where it came from:
