Early PPG Mono Synth

Title link takes you to shots pulled from this auction. Notes from the auction below, in German and then translated to "English." Gotta love the translation tools. : )

Update via Yves in the comments:
"You will find some related information on this site dedicated to PPG: http://www.ppg.synth.net/1002_20/" Note the retractable patch chords in the shot above vs. the shots on the PPG site.

"sehr gut erhaltener analoger mono Synthesizer von PPG. Nach verschiedenen Fachauskünften handelt es sich um ein frühes modell des 1002 (located in Hamburg, Germany PPG stood for Palm Productions GmbH. Wolfgang Palm was the owner and chief designer at PPG. Palm started making synthesizers around 1975 and during these early days he became associated with members of the German proto-space-music band,... Other early instruments included the PPG 1002, which Palm called "the first programmable synthesizer")... das gerät ist funktionsfähig und kann auch vorort ausprobiert werden. Rare PPG 1002 Up for Sale

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

The last post featuring one for sale was back in 2008.

"PPG 1002 extremely rare vintage analog synth + cv / gate + audio in (serviced)

Up for sale is an (1) extremely rare PPG 1002 synthesizer, build around 1976. Approx. 20-25 units are been made and probably not more than 10 are still alive, so it's a unique chance to buy one. The first owner was PPG employee Lutz Vogelsang, we can prove that. He sold it to a friend and we are the third owner. Lutz installed a useful external audio input mod with a low/high gain switch on the front panel. You can overdrive the filter beautifully now and when you connect the 'output II' into the ext. audio input you can create an additional resonance to the sound.

We serviced the synth and installed a v-trig / osc / filter input to control it with another device like a sequencer. The sawtooth oscillators, snappy filter and weird modulation possibilities makes this a monstersynth. It sounds amazing!!

Cosmetically the synth is in near mint condition with only some minor signs of use. Please check all the detail photos for a good overall impression.

The service report is part of the sale. It is a 220v version with European plug installed. There is no serial number on the synth."

PPG 1002 - Analog Synthesizer (Pro Serviced + Swan Flightcase)

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this listing

"PPG Synthesizer 1002 for sale pro-serviced and comes with swan flightcase.

Had this for almost 6 years and serviced recently by Stefan Hubner who has a deep understanding of PPG systems.

Some things to observe, one underside key broken but doesn't affect play..these are originals. Jacks for CV, Gate and filter modulation have been added and adjusted to 1V/oct. Jacks added in Service. 'The mains wiring has been re-done according to current safety expectations (not to say standards) including a 'pig tail' cable with an IEC male plug for easier connection. CV and Gate were never standard on the 1002 so the ones having it were all more or less hacks, especially when it comes to oscillator CV. One would expect 1V/octave with 0 volts at a defined note usually. For the 1002 without my modification this means you set the potentiometer on the back that usually came with CV in to track 1V per octave but then had to add an offset of something around 2 volts to reach the lowest C. My approach disconnects the keyboard instead of adding some external voltage somewhere and simulates exactly what the keyboard delivers starting at 0 volts for the lowest C. The connection is being made by a relay actuated by the contacts in the CV jack. By simulating the keyboard, all panel functions remain active on the external CV (glide, tune, modulation) Trigger/Gate is a voltage input (V-Trig) working from 5V up. The filter input only modulates the filter setting and is not intended to make the filter track, for this purpose you should rather use the panel knob that attaches the cutoff control to the keyboard CV.'"

EXTREMELY RARE PPG 1002 for Tom + first ever shop tour!!!

video upload by foleytronics fx repair

"Here is a demo of the EXTREMELY RARE PPG 1002 for Tom. Plus a bonus first ever tour of the Foleytronics shop!!

For those that want to attempt to tune this synth, here is what worked for me:

The trimmer by the regulators is the CV offset; trim for 0v for the lowest key. This interacts with the CV v/oct, which is right above where the two shielded cables connect from the 20-pin keyboard connector. Trim this for 1v/oct, which can be measured at the switched oscillator CV input jack on the back of the instrument. Once these are set, you can move on.

The oscillators are tricky. They each have an initial frequency trim pot and a volt/octave trim pot. However, the initial frequency trimmer cannot be set willy nilly to A440 because their initial tuning frequency greatly affects the octave selection switches on the top panel. What I found to be most effective is to set the MASTER TUNE front panel pot to 0, the OCTAVE SLIDER to the left of the keyboard to the middle and then begin tuning. Note, every trim pot for each oscillator will affect the others for that oscillator so this is an exercise in extreme patience.

First, turn off keyboard control for OSC B and roughly center its front panel tuning pot; set its octave to +3 and put a folded piece of paper on middle C. You are now going to tune the octave selector for OSC A; this part is confusing as there is a trimmer to adjust the octave selection offset for BOTH oscillators, but only OSC B has an adjustment to “match” its octave selection with that of A. Thus, you have to use that trimmer to get OSC A perfect and then match B to A - the method that worked for me was to switch between octaves for OSC A and adjust the octave offset trimmer along with the initial frequency trim pot for A to get a perfect octave selection for OSC A over the OSC B drone.

After the OSC A octave adjustment, it’s time to adjust B’s octave adjustment. Set A to +3, and switch OSC B to +1; adjust for zero beating at the trimmer in the upper left corner of the board right at the edge of the PCB. Then, switch OSC B back to +3 and adjust its initial frequency for zero beating; repeat this until the octave selection is perfect for B.

Now, it’s time to adjust for V/octave for each oscillator. Sadly, this adjustment affects the octave center calibration we just did, so you’ll have to keep backtracking until it’s good. Adjust the V/octave trim pot for OSC A, which is directly to the left of the CV v/octave we did in the first step. You’ll now have to mess with the init. frequency for A along with the V/oct to get the oscillator to track correctly on the keyboard, but like I said earlier, you have now probably slightly messed up the octave selection so you will have to go back and do that again. Then, adjust the tuning of OSC A again and repeat this process until OSC A tracks perfectly and has good octave selection. I couldn’t really get the +4 octave to be perfect, but hey, it’s a prototype and is probably 50+ years old.

Now for OSC B; it’s very similar to A. Use the V/octave adjustment trimmer which is the lower left trim pot on the PCB along with the initial frequency trim pot to get B to track along the keyboard. Again, you’ll have to go back and adjust the octave selection, but that’s not as bad for B because its octave adjustment doesn’t mess up OSC A’s octave selection. At this point, you should be able to get OSC A and OSC B to track the keyboard and the octave selections should be there"

Rare Wolfgang Palm Vintage 1975 PPG Modular Synthesizer For Sale

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Check out the groovy aesthetics of the user manual font & art below. Kind of interestring. It was the 70s...

"History

Wolfgang Palm is a German musician and inventor who was the founder and owner of Palm Products GmbH (PPG) and the inventor and creator of various pioneering technical designs for analog and digital synthesizers. He is widely acknowledged as the father of digital synthesis and as a trendsetter in the use of computer technology in the making of electronic music.

Palm's interest in synthesis technology began as a keyboardist in various local bands in his hometown of Hamburg, Germany. His namesake corporation began operating as early as 1975, manufacturing modular synthesizers in small numbers for electronica act Tangerine Dream and other musicians.

Palm is arguably most famous for the invention of wavetable synthesis, a concept which he developed in the late 1970s when he created his Minimoog-like synthesizer - the 1020 - featuring digitally controlled oscillators instead of the voltage-controlled oscillators that his 1002 synthesizer and all other analog synthesizers of that time were using. He also created the 360 Wavecomputer that would later become the renowned PPG Wave series. Palm's design was the impetus for the creation of the highly successful PPG Wave synthesizer, which was used by numerous bands throughout the 1980s and beyond.

PPG 1002 Analogue Monosynth - VEMIA

"Superb early rare interesting analogue monosynth in excellent condition. I can't imagine there is a much better example of this synth in the world. The CV in is a strange non-linear design, but tuning on its own keyboard is perfect. Thoroughly tested by Lucid Sound, some screws replaced, the whole instrument serviced and calibrated where necessary. It is in excellent cosmetic condition, with the panel almost faultless, and all knobs in original condition. One of the neat (EMS-like) 'magic eye' buttons has lost its iris, so that the orange bit doesn't disappear when it is switched off. The solid wood endcheeks show signs of its age, but look fine, and somehow right. The keyboard is level and in first-class condition. There is a bit of paint scraping on the back panel, visible in the photo. Beautiful."

PPG "Der Kleine" - The First PPG

via Jan. The following audio is of Wolfgang Palm's first PPG called "der Kleine." According to Jan, only 5 were produced. A former owner of "Der Kleine" was Amon Dul II.

Jan: "'Der kleine' was built prior to the 1002/1020 ( those circuits are based on the 'Kleine') I am currently discussing with W.Palm on how to fix all the sites to include this synthesizer."

Synthesizer von Gestern (Synths of the Past) Vol 2, Matthias Becker.

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Beautifully-produced second volume of Matthias Becker's authoritative 'Synthesizers of the Past' book - in German, but with so many superb illustrations that it's hardly necessary to read the text. New, unused, still sealed. The photos were taken of another copy of the book.

Too many highlights to mention all, but the book covers such absolute classic synths as the Trautonium, ARP 2500, EMS Synthi 100, E-mu Modular, Steiner-Parker Synthacon, RMI Harmonic Synthesizer, Birotron, PPG 1002, Moog Taurus and Liberation, Roland System 700, Synlab Modular, Roland SH-7, Crumar DS-2, Korg Sigma, ARP Quadra, Roland RS-505 and VP-330, Fairlight CMI, Realton Variophon, Oberhaim OB-Xa, Xpander and OB-SX, Gleeman Pentaphonic, RSF Kobol, Emulator 1, Synergy, Roland SH-101, TB-303, TR-606, MC-202, Jupiter 6, Syntec Banana, SCI Prophet T8, OSCar......... an incredible roster which would (in the beautiful condition they are in the photos) probably now be worth over half a million US dollars.

All with superb photos by Dieter Stork. Hardback, beautifully printed on very high quality paper, bound to the highest standards. A coffee-table book which is also a superb source of information. The Rolls-Royce (OK, Mercedes) of synth literature. (I should know - I produced the Ford Fiestas of the genre.) ISBN 3927954012, printed in 1995."

Pictured here is the MOOG Touchplate prototype #1.
"A fantastic and rare example of Bob Moog's own handiwork, serial number TP010. When he started back into music manufacture in the early eighties, the model 300 touch-plate was one of his first products. This is the prototype Synton received from Bob for demonstration purposes. It is extremely Moog-like in its characteristics. It has its own inbuilt power transformer, and the outputs are available on six 1/4in jack sockets, with good ol' Moog knobs for controlling sensitivity. It has a Synton sticker on the back, saying 'TOUCH PLATE USA'. Synton and Moog had a close relationship in the 80s, with reciprocal import/export. It is untested. This is from the collection amassed by Felix Visser, former head of Synton. All items were destined for a national technology museum project, many years in the planning, but finally cancelled by politicians and planners. They have mostly been stored unused for a number of years. Any items marked untested are untested, are sold as is, and could be fine or could need work. Wherever we have more information (good or bad news) it is mentioned in the item description."

Synthesizer von Gestern (Synths of the Past) Volume 2

via this auction

"This is a brand new sealed, unopened copy of the rare classic synthesiser book, 'Synthesizer von Gestern' by Matthias Becker. It is the second volume, which (at 146 pages) is larger than the first, and includes an incredible array of classic synths. Unlike the A-Z or Museum book, this is a beautifully-bound hardback, and is printed on very good quality paper. It is the first and only edition of this rare book. The picture is of another book, but it is identical.

When this book was out of print and no longer available, copies were changing hands for 100GBP-plus. Then the publishers found one last pallet of books in their warehouse, gave them to the author in lieu of royalties, and I drove to Koeln in Germany to bring back all I could.

It is in German, but so much of the book is taken up with beautiful full-colour photos and excellent illustrations that that isn't as important as you might think, if you don't speak German. It's a great coffee-table book, but full of serious information too - and the photos are in a class of their own. Crisp, beautiful, detailed, professional!

The book starts with an in-depth interview with Oskar Sala, inventor of the Mixtur-Trautonium (used for the entire soundtrack of Hitchcock's 'The Birds'). Fantastic photos of his studio and various Trautoniums.
Other synths and electronic instruments covered in detail include:-
