Ambient Electro Jam Starring iPhone + QuantumVJ

Published on Jun 26, 2016 Perplex On

"A very minimalistic ambient electro jam solely using Poly app on iPhone for the music and Quantum VJ audio visualizer for realtime glitchy visuals! The rain was falling while doing this jam on the balcony, which set a great calming mood :) Lean back and enjoy!"

PO32 Tonic + iPhone Connection (Jamuary2022 Challenge)

video upload by Perplex On

"This jam is my attempt to take part on the weekly #jamuary2022 challenge by @True Cuckoo , where the theme "connection" has to be implemented in one or the other way. Besides, it has to use at least some acoustic samples.

I see the theme of connection contextualized in four layers:

- Emotional connection: The piano recording dates back about 5 years ago to one morning at my mother-in-law‘s house. While some part of the family was preparing food, i was tinkling on the family’s old upright piano. You can even hear my little nephew playing in the background. Especially since the piano and even the house doesn’t exist anymore in this form, it’s a nice reminder to this very moment.

- Literal connection: By strapping the PO on the iPhone, both devices almost become one new self-contained instrument, both by forming a physical unity and by enabling the usage of each audio output simultaneously.

- Physical connection: By utilizing the gyrometer sensor in the iphone to scrub through the recording in a granular synthesis environment (here using idensity app loaded with 2 pitched instances of the piano recording), the body movements are tied to the sonic outcome.

- Audiovisual connection: By presenting this little jam in combination with audioreactive visuals, which are moving forward with each snare hit, the goal is to create a visual clue for the audience to get involved even more into what is happening, creating a wider experience and connection to the act. Furthermore, there‘s a meaningful context to the interweaving circular visuals in the sense that a circle is a connection of infinite points. Like all these individual sonic grains form a whole connected sound. Like life is a connection of infinite single memories."

OP-Z Dark Analog Explorations

video upload by Perplex On

"Some rather dark and noisy explorations using only the analog instrument on the OP-Z. What i found really useful in this case was to either use full cranked up reverb on both fx channels to really dip the sounds into dark space, or combining the reverb with the chorus fx for some heavy detunings. In some patches i‘ve also included the gyro of the OP-Z to modulate the filter cutoff by tilting the device. Besides, i realized that when turning the usb monitoring on while live recording this into my iPad over USB, it‘s feeding itself back into the input, resulting in more or less heavy feedback loops, which is also a technique used in some occasions here."

Norns + Launchpad + Model Cycles + iPad = ❤️

video upload by Perplex On

"Could play with this setup for hours! #awakescript on #norns with a connected #launchpadmini acting as a #grid, midi going into #polythemus on the ipad to distribute it to 6 channels in a round-robin fashion to the #modelcycles. This also allows to selectively turn each channel on or off for more variety. And finally M:C‘s audio going back into the ipad where it’s spiced up with #k7d delay and recorded in AUM."

GLITCHING WITH MICROCOSM

video upload by Perplex On

"First run with the #microcosm for glitching the drums coming from #drumcomputer. Background pad coming from the wonderful #isometra plug-in for decentsampler. The microcosm is controlled by a few LFO sending various midi cc values to control parameters like mix/activity/timing on the microcosm on top of live tweaking its knobs. Besides, random midi program changes switch between the different glitch presets on the microcosm."

BLEASS SATURATOR - Versatile Motion Waveshaper App for iOS

Perplex On

"I feel very honoured to have had the opportunity to create the official promo video for BLEASS' latest iOS plugin called Granulizer. The task was not only to create the soundtrack (of course with heavy use of the plugin) but also to establish a visual environment that kinda builds on the lofi 3D style of the UI's grain display. The video was realized by actually projecting the visuals onto the table with the ipad in the center. Music was created on the iPad with BLEASS Alpha, Zeeon, various BLEASS fx and StepPolyArpUnit and ChordPolyPad as sequencer in one take hosted in AUM. Visuals were made with NOTCH and projected with a Ricoh PJ WXC1110 projector."

NANOSTUDIO 2 & A Pre-Release Look At BLEASS Granulizer - Live Demo for the iPad
The Sound Test Room

"BLEASS Granulizer is a granular texture effect plugin with randomization, 4 multi-bus audio inputs and a mesmerizing 3D visualizer.

BLEASS Granulizer generates short samples (‘grains’) from different input signals by modulating different parameters which you can visualize thanks to a 3D Visualizer:

– Volume
– Pan (represented by width in the visualizer)
– Size ( = grain’s duration)
– Density ( = frequency of grains generation)
– Offset ( = the amount of time between record and play represented by the depth in the 3D visualizer)
– Backward/Forward Playback Direction
– Shape ( = grain’s envelope, represented by the height dimension in the visualizer)
– Warmth ( = strength of the distortion applied to the grain)
– Tune ( = grains can be pitched up or down according to different modes: “Fine” / Chromatic / Major / Minor / 5th / Major 7th. / Minor 7th / Octave)

The amount of randomization can be set with the “dice” knobs.
Density, grain size and offset range can be freely synced or beat synced to the host’s tempo.
Touching and holding the visualizer modifies pan and density.

BLEASS Granulizer takes up to 4 sources from different busses as inputs (compatible host required). When multiple busses are on, each grain is randomly extracted from one of the available sources."

New OODA Sequencer for iOS

OODA Sequencer Testdrive video upload by Perplex On

"First little run with #oodasequencer going into a couple of #decentsampler instances and #purepiano. Served with particles. Enjoy. 😊"

OODA - Portable MIDI Sequencer by Ryan Robinson

OODA - NEW - Portable MIDI Step Sequencer - With Wormholes - Featuring SynthMaster 1 & 2 - For iOS
video upload by The Sound Test Room

And a few tutorials by the developer followed by full details:

Launch Party! Take 50% off OODA and ZOA for 72 hours.

OODA is a fresh take on the classic MIDI step sequencer with interactive and semi-generative enhancements.

What makes OODA unique is that you can connect arbitrary steps together using conditional “wormholes” to add structured (or random) variation to your sequences. Another unique feature is that OODA’s underlying model is decoupled from its voices. This allows you to interact with your sequences and create melodic variations in real time without affecting your groove.

OODA’s open-ended sequence grid can be easily configured for almost any use case. Anything from simple melodies and bass parts to semi-generative chords and arpeggios, OODA can do it all with a little creativity!

Novation AFX STATION (PERPLEX ON Presets Walkthrough)

Perplex On

"I had the immense honor of creating some official presets for the new Novation AFX STATION that come with the device! Here is an overview of them while skipping through and tinkering with them a bit. All sounds are coming directly from the AFX STATION, only a touch of reverb was added where i found it suitable. Enjoy!"

Sunday Arpeggios With Model Cycles

video upload by Perplex On

"#ModelCycles in arpeggio mood today. Sequenced externally in this case using #StepPolyArpUnit on an iPad. First in a random fashion cycling through all six midi channels but then going into all channels at the same time to use all six voices together. Next to the live tweaking of the parameters, each track on the cycles is not only using internal LFO modulation but also velocity responsive modulation via the pad setup for each track, so it responds to the changing midi velocity of the incoming notes.

Served with projected visuals made with HeavyM."

Ambient iPad Jam Feat. Roli Lightpad Block + Bouncing Ball

Perplex On

"I was totally unaware of custom scripts for the Roli Lightpad Block, which can actually transform it to a standalone hardware sequencer. I was so inspired by this that i got myself a used one to try some of them. Great fun! Here the Lightpad is loaded with a script by @Guy Dupont which allows for drawing rectangles on its surface and a simulated bouncing ball triggers a note on every collision. Midi can be transmitted via USB midi or bluetooth. I've routed the midi output to a Mozaic patch which randomly distributes these midi events to 3 instances of Aparillo synth with a bunch of fx like K7D delay, Blackhole Reverb, Bleass Compressor, Velvet Machine, Eventide QVox and FAC Bandit. Enjoy!"
