"Twentieth visit to the Garden. Composed for Virus TI, Little Phatty and Blofeld"
"The twentieth piece of the HR cycle. To celebrate this number, I decided to use various means of composition. After a small introduction with the Virus TI, the first part goes on with Little Phatty solo lines, 00:41 to 6:11, with a small touch of Virus TI, 0:59 to 1:17, and some drops of Wiener Philarmonik Steinway, 5:00 to 5:53.
From that point, some Virus TI elements of the 19 previous pieces appear in a new configuration to develop at the same time echoes and brand new musical forms. It runs during the second part - with a short background call,(as a night bird call), of Doepfer coming from HR XVII, between 1:39 and 1:45. At 5:27, the Virus Ti vanishes and the end of this part is exclusively composed for Blofeld. I wanted to do something special for this twentieth composition of the HR cycle, and I will of course go on this work in progress since this issue gave me many new ideas."

Quintette
YouTube Published on May 16, 2012 by RADIOKLOW
"Quintette is a collective work achieved with a group a four students of Lycée Edouard Herriot, Lyon, France : Laure Varichon, Noé Charmet, Clément Poignet, Kiefer Wiessler. During the year 2011-2010, they joined a course I created about philosophy of aesthetics and electronic music. The result of our work is this composition in five movements for Virus TI, Microkorg and Doepfer, to which we added parts for voices and piano. The voice parts are the free theater like interpretation of two famous texts by Emmanuel kant and Friedrich Nietzsche about the question of genius. The voices and the piano were sometimes transformed with the GRM Tools. The five films were created by the four students and I to illustrate the notion of creation in a free way, through the process of a painting's creation followed until the end of the fifth movement. A bonus consisting in one of my own composition was added to the Quintette. The whole work was shown for the first time in Lycée Edouard Herriot on friday 11 May 2012, to a large audience during the Week of Arts of this high school. I want to thank the four students for their friendly involvement and beautiful work in this project !"
The movements and synths used:
1st Movement [Doepfer for intro, Access Virus Ti for majority of piece, MicroKORG solo at end]
7:15 2nd Movement [All MicroKORG]
11:50 3rd Movement [Access Virus Ti - appearance at 17:06]
21:25 4th Movement [All Moog Filtatron]

Yves Usson - The Man Behind the Arturia MiniBrute
Marc-Henri aka RADIOKLOW, who has been featured on this site numerous times, sent in this image of Yves Usson's recent demonstration of the Arturia MiniBrute in Lyon, France. Yves is well respected in the synth community for his DIY work at http://yusynth.net, and most recently his work on the new MiniBrute.
I asked Marc-Henri if I could post the image and his words. Not only did he agree, but he sent some words from Yves Usson as well. Don't miss Marc-Henri's note on how design began in the modular realm.
Yves Usson on the birth of the MiniBrute: "I was contacted by Arturia in june 2010 to conceive and draw the whole chain of analogic sound production for the Mini Brute. I made a first model of the components. Then the engineers of Arturia created the transposition of the circuits into surface components, and their integration in product. Arturia developed the whole numeric control of the keyboard, of the Midi/Usb interface and of the arpeggiator. I took part in the integration process and creation of the successive prototypes until the final production was achieved. I also wrote several chapters in the user's guide, especially the didactic part about subtractive synthesis and the description of the Mini Brutes various functions."
Marc-Henri on the image, Yves Usson & the MiniBrute: "Here is a portrait of Yves Usson, the creator of the Mini Brute. He lives in Grenoble (one hour far from my city, Lyon) and is mainly a creator of modular synths (the one behind him is one of his unique pieces after various modules). Grenoble is also the home city of Arturia and this explains also why Yves Usson was asked to collaborate with this famous and beautiful label. I took this picture in my music store whose synths manager, a very good friend called Pascal, had organized the first french presentation of the Mini Brute last saturday. It was something great to face one of the six already built Mini Brutes ! Yves Usson explained us he started building the future Mini Brute in modular form before imagining its shape with the Arturia's engineers, because he is so familiar with this kind of system, it was for him the best way to conceive an analogue.
Yves Usson, as every great creator, is a very simple and passionate man, generous and open minded, and I think his instrument has the taste of genius. By pure chance, I discovered he is member of a small association of electronic music I belong to. This created a friendly connection between us. I will certainly have other opportunities to meet him in his studio and maybe try one of his fabulous self made modulars ! I love this kind of persons, highly creative with simplicity and generosity."
Note the MiniBrute filter is the Nyle Steiner filter, and I believe the physical controls and case was designed by Axel Hartmann also responsible for the designs by Access, Waldorf, Moog, and more - you can find the list on his designbox site here. Use the on-page scroll bar on the right to scroll through the list.
Big thanks to Marc-Henry and Yves Usson for this post!
Update: turns out the modular in the background is actually a custom MOS-LAB System 16.

Update: I sent the following to RADIOKLOW and thought I'd share it here as well. I love the use of the Virus in these pieces. Here is why.
"As always, I love your use of the Virus TI and the sounds you create with it. It's refreshing to hear it used in this way. I think it's inspirational in that it reminds people you can use synths for more than rhythm based electronic music. People seem to associate music like this with Buchla and forget you can use a synth like the Virus to explore sound in a similar way. It's easy to fall into the use of synths for more conventional electronic music. Your music reminds me of when I first explored editing synths and my initial love for synthesis unbound by conventional sounds. For me it was all about creating new instruments never heard before. My first synth was the Matrix-6, hence the alias matrix and name of the site. The Matrix-6 has a pretty extensive modulation matrix, tracking and ramp generators, velocity sensitivity, aftertouch, and something not common on most synths, release velocity. You can map all of this to different parameters in the modulation matrix allowing you to essentially create unique expressive instruments." It was more about exploring sound than trying to create specific sounds to use in a mix. Note it's all good in my book, it's just nice to be reminded that you are free to explore anything you want, anytime you want. Don't box yourself in.
