Quarantine Sessions 1 - dark ambient live jam

Published on Mar 16, 2020 Ran Kirlian

"Due to Spanish covid-19 quarantine I'm having some extra time to play with my synthesizers. This live jam started as a simple sound check, then evolved to a long track and finally became an improvissed 6 track live act, just for fun. It was recorded in one take with no overdubs and postproduction additions (so having some mistakes here and there).

It was recoded on my cell phone, which has a time limit of 30 minutes on video recording. It took me like 7 mins to notice that it was not recording before I started it again, so there is a "not live image" gap that I filled with black and white footage from the same session that it's obviously not synced to the audio.

Track list:

Part 1 - 00:00
Part 2 - 04:24
Part 3 - 23:13
Part 4 - 38:02
Part 5 - 45:50
Part 6 - 57:29

Tools:
- Minimal Eurorack System: noises, drones & random flavours
- Access Virus Indigo + Roland JP 8080 + Waldorf XT: drones, pads and lead
- Access Virus Indigo 2 (Redback): drones and lead on part 5
- TC Electronic MS3000: reverb

Guitar Sounscapes with Ebow & csGrain

YouTube Published on May 4, 2012 by RanKirlian

"A brief collection of 3 improvised soundscapes and patches on CSGrain for iPad with my guitar and an Ebow. Don't expect superb playing skills as the guitar is not my main instrument. Also sorry for the ground noise and artifacts, this was recorded on the fly. The audio chain is: guitar to Lexicon Omega to iPad, then processed by csGrain and the audio output goes back to the Omega and this to Sonar on the PC thru the EMU 1820m.

I've included the camcorder mic sound on the last patch (from minute 5:03 to 6:30 ) because I loved the sound generated by the collision of strings with the ebow while vibrating and found it fitting pretty well with the soundscape. I hope you like it."

iPad in my studio 2: Addictive Synth, Jasuto Pro, NodeBeat & Sylo Synth

YouTube Uploaded by RanKirlian on Oct 9, 2011

"More demos of iPad synths and musical apps that I'm using and enjoying in my studio. You can jump to the demo of each synth by clicking the next times: Addictive Synth (0:07), Jasuto Pro (6:53), NodeBeat (11:33) and Sylo Synth (13:20).
Brief descriptions (from the video text):

* Addictive Synth [iTunes]: dynamic wavetable synthesizer from VirSyn featuring intelligent randomizer for sounds and arpeggios and CoreMIDI support. Having a lot of morph and modulation options, this synth also allows to directly draw the osc wavetables and the filter envelopes. It is great for pads, basses, leads and arpeggios.

* Jasuto Pro [iTunes]: node-based modular synthesizer able to build almost any kind of sound and effect. It contains modules for oscillators, filter, effects, math ops, signal treatment, a complete sampler, a step sequencer and a virtual keyboard. It is one of the most powerful iOS synths I know.

Jasuto uses the relative position of nodes and their connections to control the sound. So the scene not only represents the synthesis structure, but also a custom multi-touch control surface. Motion can be recorded per node giving you rich, flexible automation. Also, you can create entirely new samples by drawing right in the app. It comes installed with more than 45 modules. Each of the modules have been hand-optimized for your devices CPU, allowing you to create extremely complex scenes.

* NodeBeat [iTunes]: it is an experimental node-based audio sequencer and generative music application for iOS. By combining music and playful exploration, NodeBeat allows anyone to create an exciting variety of rhythmic sequences and ambient melodies in a fun and intuitive fashion.

* Sylo Synth [iTunes]: this synth allows you to play music, or create sound effects, using sounds from basic waveforms or using the iPads built-in microphone. It features live time-stretching technology based on granular synthesis and some great FX units: frequency modulation, ring modulation, echo/delay, distortion and a low-pass filter with resonance control.

Sylo Synth is specially great for rare sound effects and drones."

My MOTM System III: MFOS VC-LFO

YouTube Uploaded by RanKirlian on Aug 16, 2011

"I've recorded this video after installing the module, a MFOS VC-LFO. It is a voltage controlled LFO with 2 CV inputs, PWM and 5 waveform outputs: Sine, Saw, Triangle, Ramp and Square. It is a great modulation source for any modular system and also very easy to build. Some reverb added while recording."

iPad in my studio 1: DM1, Synthtronica, Beatwave, Mugician & Sunrizer

YouTube Uploaded by RanKirlian on Jul 31, 2011

"This video collects brief demos of some musical apps on my iPad . In this first part I play DM1 (0:13), Synthtronica (1:37), Beatwave (4:14), Mugician (5:19) and Sunrizer (7:11).

* DM1 [DM1 - The Drum Machine - Fingerlab] is an advanced vintage Drum Machine. It includes a step sequencer, drum pads, a mixer and a song composer to combine patterns. DM1 comes with 34 high quality vintage and produced drum kits.

* SynthTronica [SynthTronica - Leisuresonic] is a polyphonic spectral synthesizer based on formant architecture and including a dynamic multitouch filter (with control over 11 independent filters). Specially great for complex pads and textures.

* Beatwave [Beatwave - collect3] is a free matrix sequencer with good quality instrument samples and nice visuals. It includes 4 separate tracks allowing you to have multiple instruments playing at once. More instruments can be installed by in-app purchase as well as a Pro version upgrade.

* Mugician [Mugician - Rob Fielding] is a free microtonal capable distortion synthesizer with an 11-string bass guitar layout with extremely low latency.

* Sunrizer [Sunrizer synth - BeepStreet] is a great sounding virtual analog synthesizer that takes the definition of iOs synthesizer to the next level. Features: true SuperSaw sound emulation, 7 voice polyphony with 2 warm-sounding oscillators per voice + 2 sub-oscillators, 2 independent multi-filters per voice, 2 LFOs, 2 envelopes, effects, arpeggiator and Morph Group function."

Ran Kirlian - Darshan

YouTube Uploaded by RanKirlian on Jul 24, 2011

"Tools: Access Virus Indigo, Roland JP8080, Waldorf MIcrowave XT, HG Fortune ScapesWizard & Use-Audio Plugiator + Prodyssey. Reverb added while recording with EMU 1820m.

Tree images recorded with Sony DSC-V3 thru a terrestial telescope.

Darshan or Darsana is a Sanskrit term meaning "sight" (in the sense of an instance of seeing or beholding), vision, apparition, or glimpse. It is most commonly used for "visions of the divine" in Hindu worship, e.g. of a deity (especially in image form), or a very holy person or artifact. One could "receive" darshana or blessing of the deity in the temple, or from a great saintly person, such as a great guru. [Taken from Wilipedia]"

iPad controlling two synths (TouchOSC, Evolver & Nova)

YouTube Uploaded by RanKirlian on Jul 21, 2011

"For this experiment with my iPad I designed a basic layout for TouchOSC to help me control 2 synths at same time. To do that, I create a keyboard and 2 XYpads on the layout. The keyboard points to channel 1 (the novation nova) while the touchpads goes to channel 2 (DSI Evolver).

Using a Camera Connector I can drive coreMIDI to a midi interface with USB. The one I'm using here is an ESI Miditerminal M4U, that gives me 4x4 midi ports and 1 USB port. By doing this, the Miditerminal get both midi signals and power thru the USB from the iPad, and let me send midi signals thru different ports. The last step is to configure on each synth which midi channel will they receive, so there I had to set channel 1 on the Nova and 2 on the Evolver. Try yourself and enjoy!"

M-RGT Psybox 1.1 demo

YouTube Uploaded by RanKirlian on May 9, 2011

"Brief demo of the new update for M-RGT Psybox 1.1, a space-atmospheric soundscape generator - made to produce sounds, which can be used to create Ambient and Space Music.

psyBOX uses the samples as a source of spectra splitting them into multiple grains-micro waves and combining them in clusters. Those clusters are formed randomly and they flow from one into another forming infinite drifting morphing.

new version 1.1 features a multieffect processor, a great modulation matrix, 3 LFOs and a step sequencer."

Replacing display on a Korg Wavestation A/D

YouTube Uploaded by RanKirlian on Mar 26, 2011

"Last evening I finally decided to replace the damaged display of my Korg Wavestation A/D. I've decided to document the operation with video and added some titles to explain the process.

I've also made a simple soundtrack with some of the most representative cinematic soundscapes of the Wavestation with no additional effects."

Yamaha TG33 - preset demos 1

YouTube via RanKirlian | August 05, 2010

"Yamaha TG33, desktop version of the Yamaha SY22, focus into vector synthesis while having FM synthesis too. The result is a nice and rare machine with lo-fi waveforms mixed with FM timbres, great to create ambient and new age complex pads and nice metallic, bell and pecussive sounds for industrial, noise and dark ambient.

This demo shows some TG33 presets with a little joystick edition. Reverb come on the recording process to DAW."

Ran Kirlian - Subaquàtica II

YouTube via RanKirlian | July 14, 2010

"Live version of an incomming project. The vocal drone comes from the MS2000, which plays a slow sequence with a lot of delay and also reverb and vocal morphing effect. Ion also plays slow organ-like arps with latch on right keyboard part and pads and noises with left keyboard part. Most of the pads comes from the OB12.

Jellyfish images were recorded at the Oceanogràphic aquarium in Valencia (Spain) 2 years ago with my old Sony V1, sorry for the bad quality."
