Roland Boutique Artist Interviews - Paul Hartnoll, A Guy Called Gerald, DJ Pierre

Published on Sep 30, 2016 RolandChannel

Playlist:
1. Roland Boutique Paul Hartnoll interview

"As one half of the legendary Orbital, Paul Hartnoll knows a thing or two about putting a killer tune together, and just as much about how to recreate that sound live in front of thousands of people.

We visited Paul’s studio to discuss the latest Roland Boutiques, and ended up finding out where Orbital got their first 303 from, and why they think their original TR-909 and TB-303 could be rather special."

2. Roland Boutique A Guy Called Gerald interview

"Making electronic music since the mid ‘80s gives A Guy called Gerald a certain perspective on the industry.
We spoke to the genre-busting producer on his first encounters with the original TR-909 and TB-303, how they helped him get started with his music, and what he thinks of the latest additions to Roland Boutique family, especially the TR-09 and TB-03.

You’ll also find out that 808 State’s ‘Pacific State’ was originally called something completely different…"

3. Roland Boutique DJ Pierre interview

"DJ Pierre is synonymous with the sound of acid house, and although the acclaimed producer has an enviable catalog of productions under his belt, it’s possibly his first release that has had the biggest impact on electronic music culture.

Phuture’s Acid Trax kick-started the acid house genre by subverting the sound of Roland’s TB-303 bassline synth, and we caught up with Pierre to talk about those early years with the TB-303, and what he thinks of the new TB-03 Roland Boutique."

Details and pics:
"This is a one-of-a-kind custom analog synth. It is a clone of the Roland TB-303 Bassline sound generating circuits plus a keyboard for playing enjoyment and a "TEMPO" LFO for triggering the gate and modulating the filter. Buttons and switches for turning on/off the accent and slide. Switches for Gate-On, TEMPO to Gate, SPEAKER ON/OFF, POWER ON/OFF and WAVEFORM SAW/SQUARE. Knobs for TEMPO, TUNING, CUT OFF FREQ, RESONANCE, ENV MOD, DECAY, ACCENT, TEMPO MOD, and VOLUME. 1/4 inch jacks for AUDIO IN (to filter), CV IN, GATE IN, ACCENT IN, SLIDE IN, and AUDIO OUTPUT. It takes a 9V DC adapter or 6 AA batteries. It has a built-in speaker. Sounds great plugged into an amplifier! Excellent through distortion pedals too! Comes with handmade carry bag and a guitar strap. batteries included."

Update: some more info: "The case was a Casio SA-20 keyboard I found at Goodwill. I modified the headphone/speaker circuit board to be louder/better sounding. Then I hand-soldered prototype boards to create the audio generating circuits of the TB-303. I used some different parts than the original, increased the resonance so it can self-oscillate, added an LFO to trigger the Gate and modulate the filter, and added a circuit to make the keyboard work."

RARE MAM MB 33 Roland TB-303 clone

via this auction

"The MB 33 is a rare vintage rack-mounted Roland TB-303 clone released in the mid-nineties by German synth maker MAM (Music And More).

It is a true analog monophonic bass synthesizer with MIDI implementation so you can create 303-like bass lines from your sequencer. A single VCO offers the same two basic waveforms as the TB-303: a sawtooth and square wave.

!! But in the MB 33 they can be mixed together for a more interesting tone than the 303 could originally produce !!

Additional knobs control the VCO tuning, filter frequency cutoff, resonance, envelope mod amount, envelope decay time and accent intensity - the same controls found on the TB-303! The 24dB lowpass filter can also produce the characteristic sound of the 18 dB filter used in the original 303. There's also an auto-slide function (4 octave range) for producing those 303-style slides and a separate input for filtering external signals through it."

TB3030 - Roland TB-303 Clone

You don't see these often. Oakley TB3030. No title link just the two shots via this auction sent my way via Evil Paul.

Details:
"This is a TB3030 synth, which is basically an exact copy of the classic Roland TB 303 synth engine with a few extra enhancements, but without the sequencer.

I always wanted to get that classic analog 303 sound but didn't want to fork out the cash ($$$!) for an original Roland TB 303. I came across a guy on the internet who went to a massive amount of trouble to copy the 303 circuit exactly, add some extra features, and print some new circuit boards for it. I bought a circuit board from him, sourced all the parts (some were very hard to find!) then constructed it (I'm an electronic engineer). I worked on it every night for a month to build it, and it worked reasonably expensive to get all the parts for it.

I also built a midi interface into it, so it can be controlled by any external midi keyboard, or a sequencer such as a computer running Cubase.

It also includes a number of mods to the original 303 synth engine (in the vein of the devilfish mods), which make it more versatile as a synth. It includes a balanced output, an overdrive/distortion circuit, filter FM, a sub octave generator, VCA decay control and an accented decay control, all of which are not included on the original 303.

It certainly has an awesome tone! You can download some samples (and other info for it) from this page: http://www.oakleysound.com/tb3031.htm. Note that these sound samples are for the newer version (TB3031) which is slightly different, however the guts are basically the same and mine sounds basically the same.

Looking at the front panel, it has the following controls:

* Tune
* FM Modulation
* VCO Waveform select
* FM Wave Select
* Slide
* Filter cutoff frequency
* Filter resonance
* Accent
* Accent Decay
* VCF Envelope
* VCF Envelope Decay
* Sub oscillator (adds extra bass an octave down for a really fat sound)
* Mod wheel control (from memory this is mapped to filter cutoff, allowing you to control the filter frequency directly from your keyboard or sequencer)
* Drive (distortion circuit that really makes this thing bark)
* VCA Decay
* Processor control on/off (allows slide and accent to be controlled with midi velocity)
* Volume

On the back it has Midi in and Midi thru connectors, signal out and filter input jack, and the power connector. It has been built into a 3 unit rack case."

"Roland TB 303 in very nice condition. Sparingly used in smoke free studio always kept in its case. Works very smooth and has a fantastic sound.

Comes with an installed Kenton mod which adds sockets for:

CV - provides Volt per Octave control over the oscillator frequency
Gate - controls when notes play (0 volts = note off / >3 volts = note on)
Filter - controls the cutoff frequency of the low pass filter (from aux out of converter)
Accent - turns on or off the accent feature (0 volts = accent off / >3 volts = accent on)

Roland TB-303 Bassline Synthesizer with MIDIBass 303 Mark II

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a very solid TB 303 in great working condition. With normal wear and tear. see pics. It has a sequentix midi system added so you can link right up to most DAWs.
MIDIBass 303 Mark II if you go to the sequentix web site they have tons of info.

The MIDIBass 303 is the ultimate MIDI retrofit for the classic Roland TB-303.

As you'd expect, MIDIBass allows the 303 synth section to be controlled by any MIDI keyboard or sequencer.
And now the Mark II version adds MIDI control over filter cutoff.

More significantly, MIDIBass transmits the notes from the 303's internal sequencer via MIDI - giving you the ability to capture the unique quality of patterns created through the TB user-interface.
This is ideal for further editing or chaining patterns on a PC or hardware sequencer, pattern backup, or doubling-up the 303 sound with another synth."

Roland TB-303 Bass Line Chrodwheel

Now this is something I've never seen before. A chordwheel for the TB-303. Title link takes you to the acution for this. Image and text saved below for when the auction dissapears. Click the image for a larger version.

"The ULTIMATE TB-303 rarity!!

I've not seen one of these for sale on ebay before. This particular one stayed behind when the original Roland TB-303 Bass Line (bought for around £100 from London Rock shop) was sold on in 1985 for £50! It has spent the last 20 years packed away in some music equipment documents.

This is the one to have to complete your set.

The top rarity, rarer than the TB-303 pattern data sheets that Roland issued at the time.

Go for it!"

Control Synthesis Deep Bass 9

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Deep Bass Nine was commissioned (circa 1994) by UK-based second-hand retailer FX Music Control as an alternative analog mono-bass-synth to satiate the demand for the Roland TB-303. Yes, this is another TB-303 clone. It's very simple and straightforward with basic controls that mirror those found on the TB-303. It's also a true analog MIDI-controlled bass synth with plenty of thumpin' bass potential of its own.

The DB9 is a single-unit rack module with all ten of its knobs on the front panel. There are no hidden menus. Just like the TB-303, the DB9's single oscillator offers two waveforms to choose from - a sawtooth or square wave. That is followed by the 303-cloned Tuning, filter Cut Off Frequency and Resonance, Env Mod, Decay and Accent knobs. Additionally you can set the DB9 to one of the 16 standard MIDI channels, and you can set it to use its external audio input instead of the oscillator allowing you to process external audio through its analog filter (inputs and outputs are mono).

Speaking of filters, the DB9 uses a 24 dB/oct filter which sounds great. It also has a limited frequency cut-off control and a strong resonance control. The resulting sound, although not quite as sharp in the mid range as a TB-303, seems much more deep and warm.

Of course, since the DB9 has no on-board TB-303-like sequencer, MIDI control is essential. The all-import Accent feature of the TB-303 is controlled here by MIDI note velocity - and turning up the Accent knob dials in how much it affects, not the volume of the note, but the filter's frequency and loudness. There is a hidden Glide control, although this is more like a portamento that seems to add some extra release on the envelope.

The Glide and the Cut Off Frequency are the only two parameters that can be controlled via MIDI CC. None of the knobs output MIDI CC data, which means all live control changes need to be performed and/or recorded live. The DB9 also has a built-in CV/Gate converter with inputs and outputs. So it can either be used with some older pre-MIDI equipment you may have or it can be used to bring certain pre-MIDI equipment into the world of MIDI.

The DB9's real strength is that it has its own natural and warm unique sound which has many sweet spots. The sawtooth and square waves are very thick and full sounding, and you can push the resonance right up till it howls. It sits in a mix very well too, so it makes for an ideal dedicated bass synthesizer module. And if you're after something to make some real analogue acid, look no further."

x0xb0x - Best TB-303 Replica (xoxbox analog synth)

via this auction

"The x0xb0x is an analog replica of the legendary Roland TB-303 synthesizer. It uses the same components, in the same schematic, to match its sound — perfectly. The difference in sound between a well-made x0xb0x and a TB-303 is about the same as the difference between one TB-303 and another.

Roland MC-202 Modded

via this auction

"There is something very unique about this MC 202. For one, as you can hear from the recordings, it has a little bit of a harder, edgier sound than other 202's. I don't know if it's due to the modifications or just the fact that no two analog synths are alike, but this particular 202 sounds good! It can go from a total acid box to a bass monster that transcends musical genres.
The sound of the 202 is generated by a Curtis CEM3340 analog Voltage Controlled Oscillator IC. This VCO is the same that is found in the Sequential Circuits Pro One. On offer are a Saw, a Square (with Pulse Width Modulation), and Sub Oscillator wave shapes. What's great about the 202 is that it let's you mix in waveforms so that complex wave shapes are possible without much fuss. Also, since the sliders in the VCO section attenuate the LEVEL of each waveform, the control one has with the 202 is different from other synths (like the Pro One) that only allow you to switch waveforms on and off. This is ideal in a live or recording setting when an individual wishes to seamlessly transform a saw wave into a massive Pulse-Width modulated square or feed in the deep sub-oscillator.

The filter is a genuine Roland IC. This filter has SQUELCH! Many claim that the 202 sounds similar to the 303. I would have to agree but with an amendment: while the 202 will do TB 303 type sounds with little trouble, the filter is much better and more versatile than a 303 filter could ever be. Basically you can go into self resonating sine waves or deep and rumbly sub-bass that rival any other monosynth of this era. If you are looking for a synth that can be as much Roland SH 101 as a Roland TB 303, then this is the box for you. The fact is that since the filter is so versatile, a myriad of sounds are possible. The filter is extremely tweakable and the sweet spots are not hard to dial in as on other filters (meaning that the filter has been calibrated to provide the best response when attenuating from completely open to completely closed and vice versa). Also, the filter takes on a whole different characteristic when combined with the modification for the LFO.

This particular Roland MC 202 has been modified so that a switch on the front panel permits the LFO's frequency to double. What that means is that with this switch, the user is able to set the LFO to oscillate at audible frequency ranges. What's great is that the user is still able to attenuate the LFO speed when the frequency is doubled and when put back into the original position, the stock frequency range is still present. This modification is mental. If you set the filter to self oscillate and then feed some LFO modulation via the MOD slider in the VCF section, the user is able to generate some serious clangs. I have an Arp 2600 and some of the sounds you can get with this mod border on the 2600's territory. Also very cool is that this frequency doubled LFO will go anywhere that the LFO goes to so you can do FM Pulse Width Modulation or modulate the pitch of the Oscillators to get FM sounds that are out of this world. And since the switch is mounted right on the front panel, the user can flip back and forth between the LFO rates on the fly while the synth is being played. With the sequencer running and tweaking some knobs and the mod switch, the sound palette is HUGE!

The envelopes on the 202 are extremely fast. Anything from percussive and tiny clicks to in your face basses are possible. On board is a complete ADSR that can be used to tweak the amp, the filter, and the pulse width of the square oscillator wave-shape. Also great about the amp section of the 202 is the fact that the envelope can be switched off and a gate can be used to open and close the amp instead of the ADSR. This frees up the envelope for filter duties and the sounds are great. Imagine resonant bass sequences that hit hard but still sound even after the filter closes. Because the envelopes are so fast, the 202 is able to produce some very heavy sounds. When combined with the sequencer, the gated VCA response yields the much sought after 303 sound.

The 'brain' of the MC 202 is the onboard sequencer. First of all this sequencer will clock to Din Sync (so use something like a Kenton or Doepfer MIDI to Din Sync Converter) so integrating it into a modern set-up is easy. Second, the sequencer is a two track sequencer meaning that in addition to sequencing the internal synth, the 202 can send a DIFFERENT sequence to another analog synthesizer. This is really a big advantage if you have other synthesizers that have cv and gate inputs. The sequence will also transmit PORTAMENTO (slide) over the cv output so you can get THAT signature Roland slide integrated onto another synth! The sequencer itself is very straightforward to program and once the basics are learned, it becomes second nature. The fact is that this sequencer is much better than the TB 303's sequencer because crazy rhythms are possible. Triplets are a breeze. The user decides whatever subdivisions for each step and also regulates what kind of note a step is (meaning if it's played legato, staccato, or tied to the next note) and if it has accent and slide. Since the accent can be routed to accent the AMP and the FILTER, the infamous 303 sound is possible. Seriously, this sequencer is amazing and is able to replicate the intricacies of a TB 303 without a problem. However, it can do SO MUCH MORE than the humble silver box could ever dream of doing! In any case, enough of my blabbing! Search around on the web and take a look at some youtube videos of this box in action and you will see just how amazing and versatile this box is.

The modification has not hampered on the performance of this synth and electronically the beast in excellent (just listen!). There were other mods performed for this particular MC 202 and mostly they were done for the previous users integration preferences. The CV and Gate inputs have been disabled. This really doesn't matter as the MC 202 would route external CV and Gate data through its ancient microprocessor and there was no real way to play it accurately over these inputs. The user (and I can provide A LOT of resources for this and additional MODS) can open the box up and modify the unit to have PROPER CV and Gate inputs if they so desire. For me, this box was best used with the internal sequencer. Also, the buzzer that clicks when edits are made was bypassed and the Din Sync OUTPUT sends Clock but no start stops. This is INTENTIONAL because when we needed to send DIN from the 202, we used a button switch to start and stop other Din Sync units so that we could, on the fly, start and stop a Roland TR 808 independently of the 202 or anything else. The unit slaves to external Din Sync without a single problem whatsoever. This is a great synth that sounds absolutely mental. Bid with confidence and take this chance to own a totally CUSTOM 202!"

Update via pac in the comments: "The 202 is soundwise a slightly stripped down version of the SH-101 (no noise generator) - it should not be compared to the 303 which has a different architecture. That said many "acid classics" in the 1990s were actually done with 101/202 rather than 303. For all the mod instructions check cykongs mod page http://www.cykong.com/Synths/Roland%20MC-202/RolandMC-202.htm and do a search on the "novamod" for the 101 (similar circuit - similar mods)"
