Soma Labs Lyra-8 Organismic Synthesizer & Volca Drum | ambient dystopian sci-fi soundscapes | #3

video upload by Nate Connelly

"Soma Laboratories Lyra 8 analogue synthesizer drone machine with Korg Volca Drum & Strymon Bigsky. Another little jam I created late last night. I'm still finding my way around this synth and attempting to control it as best I can. It's pretty wild and unruly."

"Soma Laboratories Lyra 8 analogue synthesizer drone machine with Korg Volca Drum & Strymon Bigsky. A little industrial ambient drone jam I put together. I've been trying to tame this mad machine and find my way into some practical uses for it."

Soma Labs Lyra-8 Organismic Synthesizer | live ambient industrial noise & drones exploration | #1

video upload by

"Soma Laboratories Lyra 8 analogue synthesizer drone machine & Strymon Bigsky. Here are the best parts from the first hour or so I spent with this amazing synthesizer. I tuned each of the eight oscillators to a random scale before recording in an attempt to create something semi-melodic and harmonic (rather than just noise). I felt my way around and let the Lyra lead the way.

I hadn't read the manual - just watched a few video on Youtube. I made this video to give other folk a rough idea of what they might expect the first time they play it, provided you approach this instrument with an already basic understanding of now synthesizers work.

00:00 - melodic start
01:36 - awesome harmonics
02:21 - insane phasing and squealing
03:02 - nice little chord echo sequence
04:02 - insanity
04:30 - growls & delay feedbacks
06:16 - something more melodic again
07:29 - alarm type noise
08:17 - odd drones from elsewhere"

New SOMA TERRA Synth

TERRA announcement (SOMA labs) video upload by Vlad Kreimer

"All sound in this video is TERRA without additional FX.
Just a slight master limiter was added."

via SOMA LABORATORY

TERRA is a new SOMA Labs synth that is currently in development.
TERRA is a highly conceptual device. The core idea is unity of nature and technology, and a perfect balance between simplicity and versatility. Behind the extremely simple interface hides a complex polyphonic, microtonal synthesizer with a broad and flexible sound palette that ranges from classical beautiful tones to complex atonal noise, and offers smooth and fast transitions between these extremes.

The innovative keyboard design invites new playing techniques and covers the full range of a grand piano with the possibility to tune each note with an accuracy of 125 steps per semitone. To achieve this range with such a simple keyboard we designed a unique system of pitch shifting using four additional sensors. Pressing different combinations of them will result in 16 variations of keyboard transposing, including up to 3 octaves up and down, fifth, fourth, third, tone etc.
Not only do you get the full range of a grand piano in a very compact design, TERRA also offers an entirely new and different approach to playing melodies and chords.

Soma Labs Lyra 8 #4 improv | dark electronic ambient industrial soundscape | a short film nightmare

video upload by Nate Connelly

"Soma Laboratories Lyra 8 analogue synthesizer drone machine.

I created this soundscape and short film for Halloween 2021. A friend and I went for a walk around beacon fell to do some filming and sound recording a few weeks ago, but the weather was far too wet and windy to do either!

However, I managed to get a few shots of the spectacular foggy atmospheres on my Osmo action, and thought they would pair well with the otherworldy sounds of the Lyra 8... so here we are.

The samples are from some radio show about haunted woodlands I recorded late on night on my field recorder.

I hope you enjoy. Please like & subscribe for more videos.

Dune Soundtrack The One Hans Zimmer Cover all analog synthesizers, Moog, ARP-2600, Soma Lyra-8, DFAM

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"This is a synthwave cover of the soundtrack for The One by Hans Zimmer from the movie Dune. I wanted to see if it was possible to get somewhat close to the spirit of the music using only analog electronic synthesizers with guitar. I am using some Eurorack modular with a Buchla Easel Command and Soma Labs Lyra-8 to create the drone, while the Moog Grandmother is covering the low brass parts, and the ARP-2600 is covering the string (cello and bass) parts. I'm using the Moog DFAM to cover the low drum hits. Finally, I'm using the Sequential Circuits OB-6 to do the end high strings.

I hope you enjoy! This was a fun exercise in sound design and trying to get the spirit of the orchestra into an analog synth orchestra idea."

"If you enjoyed this, please consider supporting my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ethanjamesmusic

Patch Notes:

Eurorack modular:
Instruo CS-L: using final outputs of both oscillators to a Make Noise Optomix to filter some of the high frequencies. The symmetry of both oscillators is being randomized by fluctuating voltage from a Frap Tools Sapèl.
Random Source Serge New Timbral Oscillator saw output to Serge Variable Frequency VCF. Low pass output to mixer. Filter frequency is being modulated by a Zlob modular Diode Chaos, while Q gain is being modulated by a Make Noise Wogglebug stepped output.
Make Noise Morphagene has a guitar loop playing D, and I'm using the knobs to make things change. Audio to an After Later Audio Monsoon (Clouds clone).
Make Noise Erbeverb in feedback mode to mixer.
All Eurorack audio to an Eventide H9 pedal doing reverb.

Soma Labs Lya-8 is in full drone mode with Hold turned all the way up. Most oscillators tuned close to a D with some variation. Audio is going to a Make Noise X-Pan modulated by an Intellijel Quadrax.

Buchla 208c Easel Command is providing more pulse-like ambience with random voltage changing the timbre very quickly. Audio to Make Noise X-Pan.

Moog Grandmother normalled patch with very slow attack and decay that is also assigned to the filter.

Moog DFAM using a very long decay with the two oscillators tuned a half step apart. Oscillator 2 has very low volume, so it's mostly contributing the attack sound.

ARP-2600 normalled patch with moderate ADSR modulation of the filter.

Sequential Circuits OB-6 using a polysaw sound being controlled by the Novation Bassstation II."

Aquifex - Dark Live Jam 071619 - Hartmann Neuron & Soma Labs Lyra-8

"Fun little dark jam made on a business trip last year with the Hartmann Neuron VST (Mac host) from Germany and the amazing Soma Labs Lyra-8 made by Vlad Kreimer in Moscow.

Assembled/performed in Loopy HD on the iPad Pro, recently performed directly to a stereo recorder. Since the VST was in a standalone host app it's still DAWless, technically. :-)"

Exploring Modulation Pt. 3 - Mod Delay // Lyra-8 Organismic Drone Synth Tutorial

Published on Jan 26, 2020 Ron Cavagnaro

"Please make sure to keep your volume at a moderate level. Due to the experimental quality of this synth some parts may become noisy to some, and extremely irritable to others.

This tutorial is about how to wildly change the tones even more with the Soma Labs Lyra-8 Drone Synth, using the mod delay.

Lyra//SunFall /RainShine

Published on Jan 25, 2020 C Nich0lls

"SunFall is an ambient/drone recording made with Soma Labs' Lyra synthesizer. The Lyra is quite an unpredictable instrument and SunFall is the first recording that I made with it.

The Lyra is incredibly organic and I think this piece reflects that nature. The recording is dense and loud, so adjust your listening volume to a level you enjoy. It is intended to be enjoyed at both low and high levels.

It may appear to be quite different from some of my other uploads, but I think it still represents my fascination with electronic sound and audio journeys.

Each of the voices was tuned by ear, in order to create a dense, layered drone. This drone was then articulated, voice-by voice, in a single take. The recording was originally made without effects and is remarkably raw. The posted version has some minor mastering and effects added."

Lyra//RainShine

Published on Jan 25, 2020 Nich0lls

RainShine is an ambient/drone recording made with Soma Labs' Lyra synthesizer. The Lyra is quite an unpredictable instrument and RainShine is the companion to SunFall.

As with SunFall, each of the voices was tuned to form part of a drone. However, in this piece the higher register voices were FM'ed together. The articulation of the voices was also approached slightly differently.
The original recording was made without any effects and in a single take. The uploaded version includes some light mastering and effects.

Interactive manual for the Pulsar-23

via SOMA Laboratory

"Mastering the interface of a complex semi-modular synth with hundreds of controls and functions onboard is not an easy task even for the most seasoned producer. It’s too much to memorize, and continuously checking the user manual gets annoying and interferes with the creative process. Even with using the search function you still end up scrolling up and down dozens of pages and going back and forth to understand how related features interact, a process that is more fiddly than convenient.

Why does it have to be like that? Instrument manuals - even for complex machines - are still just plain linear text with a structure that doesn't reflect the actual interface or workflow of the product it describes. Despite all the technological advances of our digital age, user manuals are still based on the same principles of how information was organized and accessed in manuscripts from over 2,000 years ago.

It's high time someone changed this! SOMA Labs designed a new and more user-friendly approach to synthesizer manuals that we believe should become the new industry standard, offering unparalleled efficiency and immediate access to relevant information through a visual (touch) interface.

What really is a synth's interface? You can compare it to a territory, like a town or a forest, where we have various objects placed in space. If each control has just one function we can compare it with 2D space, if we have multifunctional controls or menus we can speak about a 3D space. How do you best describe a space to someone else? Of course, with a map! What should a 21st century map be like? Interactive!

SOMA is therefore proud to present its new interactive manual for the PULSAR-23 drum machine, SOMA's most complex synth to date. It consists of a map of the synth’s interface where each element is clickable.

Just click on any button, connector or knob and get its description along with highlighting elements that are connected to or depend on it with the immediate possibility to check what they do.

As PULSAR-23 is a semi-modular instrument, all patching points have suggestions about which other patch points you could connect them to (about 1,000 patching tips!).

So it's also a kind of light patching tutorial.

The concept of interactive manuals can be developed much deeper and better, and we therefore invite our industry colleagues to further develop and refine this approach to user manuals for musical instruments. Let’s make synth manuals more user-friendly, easy to learn and more efficient, lowering the learning curve for new musicians and freeing up users' minds for pure creativity!

Welcome to the world of PULSAR-23!"

Soma Enner Synth Tutorial Lesson 2: Output Section

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"This is a tutorials series for anyone who wants to learn how to use the Soma Labs Enner body patching synthesizer electronic instrument. If I get a response to this series, I will try to break things down into small videos that are easy to mentally digest and apply to your own electronic music. We will be exploring both east coast tonal and west coast avant-garde uses of the synthesizer. The Enner is especially good at ambience, noise, and soundscapes for film music.
This second video will go into detail about the output section of the synth and show you some of what's possible to do only using your fingers. Please leave a comment with any questions or requests and a like if this was helpful."

Ambient jam w/ Soma Cosmos, Take 5, Polymoon, Marantz cassette tape piano, and guitar

video upload by Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on hardware.

A common feature of many of my songs is a sort of upward progression in dynamics; so here, I wanted to try to do something different, a soundscape that flowed from one palette to another, its feelings moving laterally instead of vertically. This approach was inspired by the Soma Cosmos and having the feedback (loop decay) set below 1.0, so that the loops gently cascade out over time and allow for new loops to take over. I love the effect. I love the Cosmos.

For audio fodder, I had recorded an improv piano piece the night before to cassette tape, and found myself using it for more than just notes/snippets, instead following its chord progression at the end here. For live sound generation, I used the Take 5—I really love the warm pads it can do—and a baritone guitar through compression, reverb, and an amp simulator. Switching the Cosmos off and on, I let the guitar take the lead in the first section, and the piano and synth in the second, with the instruments switching roles into the loop. I love that the Cosmos's on/off is silent!

Thanks for listening.

Fender Jaguar Baritone into Union Lab into Union C-Verb into Strymon Iridium - Electric guitar
Marantz PMD430 - Cassette with piano on it
Mackie Mix5 - Mixer
Meris Polymoon - Delay/reverb on everything out of the mixer

Written, performed and recorded live to a stereo output, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.
