Demo of the drum machine Sequential Circuits Drumtraks from 1984.

It is a great American drum machine. It is very flexible - for every beat and every sound in a pattern you can set volume and pitch to your needs, similar to the E-mu SP-12. It has a groovy sequencer! One of my favourite drum machines.

It is a studio machine with single outputs for drumsounds, MIDI, Clock IN/OUT and more..."

"Goofing around with the modular synth and an old Sequential Circuits Drumtraks.

The piece is a bit noisy at some points where the cheap-o compressor stomp box and the drum machine's flakey pot make a debut. I liked the overall feel of this one and will incorporate it into a final piece somewhere. The bass line is appealing to me where it diverts off on a pseudo key change. This is leading me to some rare sounding melodic lines already.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.

Synths used are the Synthesizers.com 88 space portable modular and the Sequential Circuits Drumtraks."

"Gear setup for the track 'living with schizophrenia'

The song was inspired by a video depicting what it is like to be schizophrenic. The telephone sample and female voice in the middle are all from the video.

The track represents a person waking up, disoriented but functioning, unable to really grasp what’s going on and hearing all sorts of voice like noises. The phone rings but when answered, there is an incomprehensible voice making instrument like noises coming from the handset. Things get progressively darker and fuller sounding as the middle arrives and everything seems to grind to a halt, While the Xoxbox keeps playing, like reality still going on in the background of someone’s life. A voice then explains this is all a simulation, and to get ready because now it’s about to really get going, then the effect comes back, this time rising to an explosive peak followed by an intense release giving way to lighter yet still tenseful self realisation that everything is going to be ok, this time....

The track started out as a jam with the 808 and the analog solutions reverb. I had the doepfer LFO modulation the reverb and recorded a few passes noodling with it. The big wind down and wind up effect in the middle of the track (including the high pitch whine) is achieved solely with the reverb setting being cranked to the max by the slow sweep of the LFO. In the last part of the song, it the effect of the 808 that is heard overtop the Drumtraks.

That doepfer LFO a-145 is a good deal, this one was $80 used. It can go super slow and you can retrigger it. Very handy as a modulation source for any synth or effect gear in you may own that has some type of analog control input.

Roland SVC 350 Vocoder | Where You Lie

Published on Apr 1, 2020 Alex Ball

See the Behind The Mix walkthrough below.

"In 1979 Roland released one of the most famous vocoders of all time, the VP-330, but some may not realise that it had a lesser known sibling; the SVC-350.

The 350 is essentially the same vocoder found in the 330, but in rackmount format and without the synth parts. That said, it does have some unique features that don’t appear on the 330.

The 350 went on being made quite late into the 80s and the serial of this particular unit dates to July 1985 which ties in with Roland’s move towards rack mount and module-based gear at that time.

Here’s a 1980 article on “The Roland Rack”: http://retrosynthads.blogspot.com/201...

SVC-350 features: Starting on the left there’s a microphone input section (xlr and jack) which is the modulator and then an instrument or guitar input section that acts as the carrier. The Guitar input also has a “harmonics” knob to balance the incoming sound.

Your modulator and carrier then run through the 11-band vocoder that has 11 corresponding sliders that can boost or cut that particular band to sculpt the sound. These are labelled “voice character control”.

There’s then a balance knob to blend between the direct modulator signal and vocoder as well as quite comprehensive outputs and remote (footswitch) controls for different live or studio applications.

In also has the classic Roland stereo ensemble.

My original intention was to do a talkthrough of its features and also compare it to my Seekers Voice Spectra vocoder which I absolutely love. I started trying out some test sounds for that video and was laying them down and multi-tracking for comparisons and basically I wound up making a whole track so, I decided to follow where that was going and abandon the original talkthrough idea.

There is already a talkthrough video here anyway: https://youtu.be/cOO6xTXTeiA

At the very start of the demo you actually hear a Juno and Seekers Voice Spectra (a bit weird I know, but it was intended as a comparison and this video unfolded in an ad-hoc manner). From 28 seconds we overdub with the SVC-350 and you can hear its mellower sound which compliments the more crystal-like Spectra.

From about 41 seconds I ran a Roland System 100m through the 350 with its own noise generator as modulator and an oscillator as a carrier which gave a slightly unusual texture to the ostinato I’m playing (controlled by the SH-101).

From around 55 seconds I tried a lower part singing an alternative melody and used a sawtooth from the Sequential Pro~One. I also ran a Sequential Drumtraks through the 350 as the modulator with a guitar as the carrier. The cymbals with the guitar created some particularly interesting sounds I thought (heard on the downbeat of every other bar).

As a contrast, in the middle things go acoustic in terms of voices and guitars. I quite like that moment as it’s as though we come out of electronics and into more natural sounds.

"1984 Sequential Circuits Drumtraks, drum machine, updated by Wine Country Sequential. This unit has lived in a climate controlled studio for nearly 30 years, I opened up the chassis so you can see exactly what sound chips are in there. You can see in the pictures, three added switches on the right side of the unit, these three added switches add extra sounds, also a bigger heat sink, was installed and watch out now, because this guy actually does get a lil hot. This unit is 100% functional and is in good shape with just a couple of minor dings and scuffs, but look great for being 30 years old..."

Sequential Circuits Six-Trak

via this auction

inside a Sequential Circuits Six-Trak

"The Six-Trak was released by Sequential Circuits around 1984 (Model 610).
It is a 6-voice, Polyphonic, Multitimbral, Programmable Synthesizer that has MIDI, a built in Sequencer, an Arpeggiator, and a 4-Octave (C-C) keyboard.

The Six-Trak was one of the first multitimbral MIDI instruments designed to be used with a computer with software that was available for the Commodore 64. The software allowed programming of the six voices and the sequencing.
Along with the DrumTraks drum machine, SCI claimed that with the software and this synth that it was a complete MIDI system.

Each voice can be programmed to any of the 100 internal patches and played as a separate monphonic synth. It can be played either by the external keyboard controller or an external sequencer as well.
The Curtis CEM) 3394 chips were used for each voice which contains one VCO, VCF, VCA, and LFO for each. The VCO has fine and course tuning, glide (portamento) as well as saw, triangle, and pulse (with pulse width modulation) waveforms.
Each Oscillator can be mixed with a noise generator as well and the filter section features controls for Cut-Off Frequency and Resonance.

You can also set the key follow modulation to full, off, or half.

The filter is also self-resonating and can be modulated by each oscillator.

Each voice contains an ADSR Envelope for each the VCO, VCF, and VCA.

The LFO can be routed to the VCO, VCA, and PWM and consist of such waveforms as square and triangle.

There is a single data entry knob used for programming and all the programming is done through menus. However, you can select the knob to control such things as frequency cut off and effect the filter as you play.

You can choose between Polyphonic (with portamento), Unison, and Stack modes (which allows each voice to be set to a different patch and played as one complex mono sound. Mono and Stack modes are selectible between single and multi-triggering modes as well.

The Arpeggiator can be selected as Up, Down, or Assignable (which plays the notes in the order that they were played).

The keyboard can also be split into three areas.

The Pitch-Wheel is fixed at a range of a Mjor 3rd up and a Minor 3rd down.

The Modulation-Wheel controls the LFO amount.

All of the sequences and patches can be backed up via MIDI

The Six-Trak features an 800 note sequencer and 100 patch locations.

The rear of the synth consists of MIDI IN and OUT, a stereo audio jack which doubles as a headphone jack, a footswitch for sustain, and an accessible fuse f it were to ever blow.

The overall size of the Six-Trak is 28"x12"x4 1/2" and weighs approximately 18 pounds."
