Sequential Introduces Take 5® Compact, Five-Voice Poly Synth

video upload by Sequential

And a demo by INHALT:

Sequential Take 5 INHALT Sound Design Demo

video upload by

"I had the great pleasure of working on yet another Sequential modern masterpiece, the Take 5. This is a long recording of the patches I made for the Factory Bank of sounds that ship with the synth. I think the Take 5 captures the essence of a rev 2 Prophet 5 with its SSM/SSI oscillators, filters and vca but it transposes it into the future with the sophisticated FX engine and mod matrix! What's on offer is a lovely and timeless sound with many of the modern trimmings musicians will need today. Its' compact form factor also makes it possible to easily get this first class sound in a package that's easy to gig and travel with. Please note all of the recordings are from a pre-production unit running a pre-release firmware. No additional FX or processing were added to this recording, everything you hear came straight off the Take 5."

New Instrument Puts Powerful, Affordable VCO/VCF-based Synthesis Within Easy Reach of Newcomers and Pros Alike

San Francisco, CA—August 23, 2021—Sequential today introduced the Take 5®, an all-new, compact and portable five-voice VCO/VCF-based poly synth designed with both synth newcomers and space-conscious pros in mind.

A full-featured subtractive synthesizer, the Take 5 sports two VCOs and a sub oscillator per voice, a classic 4-pole, resonant analog filter from the Prophet-5 Rev 4 design, 44 full-size keys, and a premium Fatar keybed. Its clever key-split feature gives players access to a wider playable range than many other compact synths by enabling players to divide the 3.5 octave keyboard into two separate performance zones. Dual Digital effects and a dedicated overdrive, continuously variable wave shaping, and front-panel access to analog FM ensure the Take 5 can cover a wide range of sonic territory, from vintage to modern.

“The Take 5 puts the classic Sequential sound and legacy into the hands of people who may not have been able to experience it before,” said Dave Smith, Sequential founder and lead product designer. “Packing this much performance power into such a small footprint was the kind of challenge we love. Throughout development we were amazed by how huge this synth sounds and how crazy versatile it is. It was a joy to work on and I’m looking forward to hearing what our customers create with it.”

This versatility comes from the Take 5’s sound engine. Two voltage-controlled oscillators provide traditional sine, saw, and pulse waves with waveshaping, while simple analog FM adds harmonically complex, bell-like FM timbres at need. The Prophet-5-lineage 4-pole analog filter shapes the sound of the oscillators and sub oscillator in classic fashion while a Drive control provides additional punch. For still more warmth, a Vintage knob adds micro variations to oscillator, filter, and envelope behavior from voice to voice.

The Take 5 feature set is rounded out with two LFOs (1 global, and 1 per-voice LFO), ADSR+delay envelopes, dual digital effects (a dedicated reverb and a suite of time-delay and other effects) a separate additional overdrive effect, and extensive modulation possibilities. A 64-step polyphonic sequencer and multimode arpeggiator complete the picture.

Sequential CEO David Gibbons summed up the Take 5 this way: “For players that have wanted to get into analog poly synths but have been put off by price or complexity, the Take 5 is the perfect gateway to subtractive synthesis and the creative power of Sequential’s best synths. It is pure Sequential sound and quality at a price that’s within reach of almost anyone. Portability is also a huge plus — you can transport it from studio to stage without breaking a sweat or leaving any features or playability behind.”

The Take 5 is available now at a US MAP of $1,299.

Sequential Take 5 Analog Synthesizer Sounds Part 2

video upload by Pure Ambient Drone

Part 1 here

"Dave Smith and the gang at Sequential have cooked up something special with the Take 5 compact polyphonic analog synthesizer. The Take 5 brings polyphonic analog synthesis and the legendary Sequential sound to a new generation of synthesists. It’s affordable, portable, and approachable — an ideal synth for newcomers and seasoned synth wizards alike. Though compact, the Take 5 certainly doesn’t skimp on tone! Its five voices are massive, owing to its all-analog dual VCOs. Plus, its splendid 4-pole resonant VCF is inspired by the Prophet 5 Rev 4, a modern classic steeped in tradition. With ample modulation options, including two 5-stage envelopes and one global LFO and one freely assignable LFO — there are few areas of subtractive synthesis you can’t explore with the Take 5. Not only is the Take 5 a stellar sound design tool, but it’s also a brilliantly conceived performance instrument that features a satisfying Fatar keybed with aftertouch and velocity sensitivity. You can even split the keys into two performance zones with different octave ranges! Whether it’s your first polyphonic synth or your 50th, the Sequential Take 5 is an ultra-versatile, extremely fun polysynth!

Portable, Powerful, Polyphonic
The Take 5 is Sequential’s most compact, full-featured, full-throttle VCO/VCF-based poly synth ever. It’s the perfect gateway to subtractive synthesis and the creative power of Sequential’s best synths — whether you’re new to analog synths or a space-conscious pro. And since it’s portable, you can transport it from studio to stage without breaking a sweat or leaving any features or playability behind. Genuine Sequential sound and quality at a price within your reach.

Fits Anywhere You Need It
With 44-full-size keys and a total width of just 26 inches, the Take 5 fits easily into your studio or on stage. Its nearly knob-per-function control panel gives you immediate access to all of its essential sound-shaping controls. And its ingenious key-split feature gives you access to a wider playable range than other compact synths by letting you divide the 3.5 octave keyboard into two separate performance zones.

Powerful Synthesis
The five voices of the Take 5 get their distinctive sound from a combination of two analog VCOs and a sub oscillator passing through a Prophet-5-lineage 4-pole analog filter. The result is classic Sequential — smooth, warm, punchy sound that sits perfectly in a mix and cuts through clearly on stage. For even more analog-style goodness, a Vintage knob adds voice-to-voice variation for genuine vintage character. Dual Digital effects, a dedicated overdrive, continuously variable wave shaping, and front-panel access to analog FM all ensure the Take 5 can kick out modern tone just as easily as it does vintage..

Finishing Touches
The Take 5 feature set is rounded out with two LFOs (1 global, and 1 per-voice), two ADSR+delay envelopes, extensive modulation, a 64-step polyphonic sequencer, and a multimode arpeggiator. The premium Fatar keybed makes it a pleasure to play, wherever you take it."

SEQUENTIAL TAKE 5 - Sounds, Patches & Presets | Synth Demo

video upload by synth4ever

"Sequential Take 5 synth demo featuring sounds, patches & presets. This Sequential Take 5 no talking analog synthesizer demo covers a variety of sounds including pads, leads, bass, plucks, fx and more. Filmed at Sequential headquarters.

The Sequential Take 5 is a 5-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer with 2 VCOs per voice (variable sine, saw, pulse width), hard sync, sub osc, FM and a Prophet-5 low-pass filter. It also has two 5-stage envelopes (ADSR + delay), LFO w/ multiple waveshapes (tri, saw, reverse saw, square, random), built-in digital effects, white/pink noise, vintage knob, arpeggiator, polyphonic step sequencer (64-steps), glide, unison, aftertouch, mod matrix and more.

The Take 5 is powerful, versatile and fun analog synth that combines the power of the Prophet 5 Rev 4 filter + effects & mod matrix for lots of creative sound design possibilities. It can sound quite huge and is great for leads, bass, pads and interesting fx timbres. I really enjoyed my time with the Take 5 and found the sound modern and inspiring. Hope you enjoy this synth demo of the Sequential Take 5, it was great to try it out."

Take 5 Version 2.0 - Double the Sounds + New Synthesis Features

video upload by Sequential

Press release follows:

Sequential Unveils Take 5 Synthesizer v2.0 Software Update
Latest Software Update Doubles the Number of Presets and Introduces New Synthesis Features and Effects

San Francisco, CA - Sequential, a leading manufacturer of synthesizers and electronic musical instruments, has announced the release of the Take 5 v2.0 software update, bringing a host of new features and enhancements that further extend the capabilities of this portable polyphonic analog synthesizer.

This free software update includes an additional 128 Preset and 128 User memory locations, doubling the previous sound bank size. The Factory bank expansion is filled with imaginative new sounds created by some of the world’s leading sound designers and synthesists. These sounds range from classic analog-style patches to modern, cinematic soundscapes that will give artists a competitive edge in modern music production.

Take 5 v2.0 also provides new synthesis features that dramatically expand the creative possibilities for sound design. This includes capabilities like Envelope Repeat, which allows users to create evolving and complex sounds by looping sections of the synth’s envelopes, and LFO Slew, which smooths over wave shapes to enable more organic and musical modulations. These are especially useful for creating ambient, drone, and experimental sounds, adding new dimensions to any performance.

One of the most exciting new features is the addition of a Lo-Fi effect emulating the sound of time-worn analog tape machines. Featuring controls for wow and flutter, playback head azimuth, and tape drive amount, the Lo- Fi effect can be used to add anything from a gritty character, through to a full-blown “busted tape deck” vibe, imparting a new level of vintage flavor to any of Take 5’s sounds.

'In the 18 months since we introduced it, thousands of Take 5 synths have gone around the world and introduced many musicians to the feeling of Sequential for the first time,” said David Gibbons, CEO. “We hope these new sounds excite and inspire existing owners and new Take 5 players alike.'

The Take 5 v2.0 software update includes numerous new features and several bug fixes and is available now as a free download for all Take 5 owners at the Sequential website. New Sequential Take 5 - Five Voice Poly Synth w/ Prophet-5 Rev 4 Filter

Update: demos and higher res pics here.

MSRP 1.074€ / $1,250

You might recall Sequential registered the Take 5 trademark from this post back in June. The Take 5 takes on the look of the Pro 3 with some significant differences. The Take 5 replaces the the Pro 3's filter types (below) with the Prophet-5 Rev 4 filter. The Take 5 has more modulation capabilities than a Prophet-5, but less than the Pro 3. The Take 5 doesn't have the third wavetable oscillaor, sequencer, tuned feedback, or the extra envelope(s) of the Pro 3. Each synth has its own strengths of course. This is good news for current owners.

For reference, the Pro 3 has the following filter types:

Ambient orchestra with piano, Sequential Take 5, Novation AFX Station, Korg MS-20

video upload by Jay Hosking

"Please support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/jayhosking
A live performance on piano and Sequential Take 5, with a couple of extra "orchestral" layers added afterward.

Despite putting so much time into synthesizers, drum machines, etc., I probably play more piano than anything else these days. I love music arranged for piano and synth, and I watch a ton of it here on YouTube. So it's nice to finally be making some of that on the channel.

Here, I use the Take 5's sequencer with some slow attack to create a backdrop for playing piano over. As the song moves, I progressively open the Take 5's filter to fill more and more of the space.

For bass, I added the Novation AFX Station (aka Bass Station II), not exactly what you might think of when you hear "orchestral", but is amazing for bass and strikes a balance between fitting in and standing out.

To double the melody, I added the Korg MS-20. I've got both its filters tuned into the midrange with a good deal of resonance, so it cuts through the mix without taking up too much room. I've also got a little LFO on the pitch and some noise modulation on the filter cutoff to give the whole thing a warbled, falling-apart feeling.

For piano, I'm playing my Kawai CA49, which has a great keybed and wooden keys, though the sound isn't quite good enough for a recording (great for practicing, though). I'm sending its MIDI to Native Instruments' Noire (for the deeper, richer part of the piano) and also to XLN Audio's Addictive Keys (for more of the percussive/hammer/strike of the piano); I think the two blend really well.

All in all, I'm really happy with this piece and the mood it provokes, both through its melodic choices and its timbral choices. Thanks for listening.

Kawai CA49 into Native Instruments Noire and XLN Audio Addictive Keys - piano
Sequential Take 5 - Pad sequence ambience thing
Novation AFX Station into Valhalla Shimmer - Bass
Korg MS-20 into Synapse Audio Deep Reverb - Melody

Piano and Take 5 recording as a live performance, with bass and melody overdubbed afterward, and the standard EQ/compression/limiting on the master.

Sequential Take 5 - will it Blade Runner? YES

video upload by peterkeys88

"Let's make a patch, using the Sequential Take 5 synth, inspired by my favorite big weeping Blade Runner-esque pads (real, or imagined...including 2049). I was part of the beta-testing and patch design team for Sequential's Take 5 - The Take 5 is an incredibly powerful yet compact synth that's got it where it counts.

If you have a Prophet Rev2, I've made a preset pack focused on these kinds of big wide epic pads, called Mammoth Pads, available at https://www.peterdyer.net/shop

*This is a beta Take 5 unit, so a couple buttons on the panel changed orientation on the final release."

Ambient jam with the Sequential Take 5

video upload by Jay Hosking

"A live ambient track performed entirely on the Sequential Take 5, using only the on-board effects.

The Sequential Take 5 is not revolutionary in any particular way: it's a five-voice, subtractive, analog polysynth with on-board effects. But no matter how I look at it, the Take 5 is clearly the current best first choice if you're looking to buy a versatile analog synth that can do it all. It's got fantastic build quality, good keybed with full-sized keys and aftertouch, and on-board effects that sound better to my ears than others in its range. Its oscillators and filter are good, and its bass response is stronger than most polysynths I've played with. The mod matrix is simple to use but has plenty of depth. One of the effects is a high-pass filter, which allows you to carve out the midrange for your pad work. The filter drive doesn't offer much, but the separate distortion adds a lot. The layout is intuitive, workflow is fast, and you can get to making patches with very little effort.

I've got synths I like more for bass, pads, and leads, but I've got no one synth that can do all of them this well. This was a pad patch I made with some vibrato, "vintage" fluctuations in tuning and envelopes, the bucket-brigade-style delay, long reverb, and a nice slow set of envelopes on the filter and amp. I started playing and this song came out, a good example of how the sounds can inspire.

If you've got a bunch of synths already, you probably don't need this one. (I mean, let's be honest that we don't need any of them.) But if you're looking for that one synth that can play a lot of roles really well, the Take 5 would be the one I'd recommend.

Thanks for listening."
