YAMAHA SY77 - Synth Demo | Sounds, Patches & Presets

video upload by synth4ever

"Yamaha SY77 FM and AWM synthesizer demo featuring various, sounds patches and presets. The SY77 was a flagship Yamaha FM & AWM2 synth released in 1989. In this Yamaha SY77 synth demo I showcase pads, plucks, ambient soundscapes, strings, motion loops and more.

The Yamaha SY77 has 32-voices of polyphony (16 FM, 16 AWM) and features 6-operator AFM synthesis. This provides 45 algorithms, 3 feedback loops and 16 waveforms, and 16-bit AWM2 sample ROM waveforms which can all be used in various ways to craft layered and complex sounds.

The Yamaha SY77 also has multi-stage Time Variant Filters (lowpass, highpass, multi-pole) with resonance, LFO (sine, saw, triangle and sample & hold), 16-track sequencer (16K note capacity), 61 drum sounds, 16-part multi-timbrality, 4 independent digital effects (2 reverb units w/ 40 effect types & 2 modulation units), as well as a 61-key velocity sensitive keyboard with aftertouch. The SY77 can store up to 128 preset & 64 user patches, 16 preset & 16 user multi-patches. There is also a rack-mount version released in 1990, the Yamaha TG77.

The Yamaha SY77 brings the best of 6-operator FM synthesis and blends it with AWM2 samples to provide new sound design possibilities beyond traditional FM. The combination of these two methods was marketed as Realtime Convolution and Modulation Synthesis (RCM) and enables sounds not possible on a DX7 or DX7 II.

Some advantages of the SY77 include: 5 additional waves besides the standard sine; 45 algorithms (vs 32 on DX7); flexible routing of up to three feedback sources within any algorithm, ability to design custom-routed algorithm via MIDI; routing of FM signal through a configurable filter; and of course layering and manipulation of AWM2 PCM samples with the FM synthesis.

The Yamaha SY77 is still an exceptionally powerful FM synthesizer and can be found for good prices on the 2nd hand market. Build quality is also quite substantial. If you have the opportunity to acquire one and want to go beyond traditional FM and DX7 sounds, the Yamaha SY77, TG77, or even the SY99 are great options. Hope you enjoy this Yamaha SY77 synth demo."

Yamaha TG77 Tone Generator FM AWM Synthesiser SN QO02586

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Yamaha TG77 is the rack mount equivalent of the Yamaha SY77 synthesiser workstation. It is a 16-voice multitimbral synth utilising Yamaha's advanced Frequency Modulation; Advanced Wave Memory; and the combination of these two systems, either by layering together or by modulating an AFM voice by an AWM wave, a synergy termed Realtime Convolution and Modulation Synthesis (RCM). The TG77 is a very powerful module capable of great acoustic emulations and other worldly pads and effects."

Yamaha DX7 & SY77 - 80's Synth demo and FM synthesis comparison with Van Halen, Madonna, Pink Floyd

Published on Jun 2, 2017 Power DX7

"This is a Yamaha SY77/ TG77 demo and comparison video with Yamaha DX7. I will also compare the SY77/ TG77 with Roland D-50 and Korg M1.

I will show you key differences between the DX7 and SY77/ TG77. This includes:
- Sampled waveforms
- Self-oscillating resonant digital filters
- Advanced frequency modulation, including algorithm, feedback, AFM source inputs, oscillator with 16 selectable waveforms, envelope generators etc

I will go into detail with AFM parameters for digital filters, algorithm, feedback, oscillator and envelope generator.

The SY77/ TG77 has superb digital filters that can self-oscillate with its higher resonance setting. It's analog-like sound is just amazing. It's filter can be used for low pass, high pass and band pass settings. The you set two filters with the same low pass filter setting, you get -24dB cut off.

I will also give an example of SY77/ TG77 sound design using one of my original patch.

I created this Oberheim OB-Xa emulated sawtooth pad using just one AFM element, giving you 16 polyphony. It uses algorithm 42 with 3 independent towers. As you can assign 3 operators with a feedback loop, I created 3 independent towers producing their unique sawtooth waves. By combining them, you can create an amazingly rich and analog-like sawtooth pad.

The SY77/ TG77 also includes expanded envelope generator. It has 7 levels and rates and you can loop AFM envelopes. I will give you a quick tour of its envelope generator and a demo of a sound that uses the envelope loop function.

The SY77/ TG77 also has a pitch envelope that can be assigned globally (to overall sound) or per operator (you can switch on/off for each operator). This makes it very easy to create an analog-like stab brass sound.

Basically the SY77/ TG77 is a big brother of the DX7 and its FM synthesis, capable of producing far more complex sounds."

Yamaha TG77 Synthesizer Factory Demo Songs

Published on Jul 1, 2015 Sound Programming

"Factory demo songs from the Yamaha TG77 recorded direct with no additional effects.

Song List:

1. Pot Pourri (0:02)
2. IT's CooL !!! (2:02)
3. PowerPlay (4:25)
4. House Demo:P.Ellis (6:25)

The TG77 is the rackmount version of the SY77. Released during the transition from FM synthesis to ROMpler technology, it combines advanced FM (16 waveforms, 45 algorithms) with 16-bit sampled waveforms (AWM2). It is 16-part multitimbral and was considered very powerful for its day, though it lacks some features of the higher-end SY99, such as sampling.

It is very common for the display backlight to burn out, as can be seen in this unit. It can be repaired, but the display is usable without it and the replacement part costs enough (typically around $30) and requires enough effort to replace (full disassembly plus soldering) that many people don't bother."

Creating SL Mk2 templates for control of the EGs is on my 'to do' list...

Yamaha DX-21 Frequency Modulation Synthesizer

Update via Gwenhwyfaer in the comments:
"The TG77 isn't just an FM synth, though. It has an FM engine in there - 6-operator, where each operator can be more or less freely routed (more than one feedback loop!) and take one of 16 waveforms - but there's also a ROMpler part of it, and each part (FM or ROMpler) has its own filter; and uniquely, the ROMpler output can be fed into the FM part (as in, into all 6 operators at once). Oh, and there are some nice effects on the end - two independent processors, and unlike the effects unit in my V50 I believe those processors actually have LFOs (and therefore choruses, flangers, etc) in them. (No, the V50 effects aren't a whole lot of use. Thanks for asking.) So - yes; the TG77 have lots of ways to sound lovely and warm, and they don't necessarily come from pure FM.

Having said which, free routing can turn FM from something a bit sterile to something snarly and uncontrollable (and really quite warm). Which is nice. :)"

"Oh, and the DX21 has an analogue chorus circuit in it (and can layer and detune two FM sounds even before that). Which helps a lot with warmth."

has been sitting more or less idle in my rack ever since.

There wasn't much to the upgrade process. I just followed some instructions

German Rackmount Yamaha TG77, TG33, CPX, Synthax RACKWare RG 124 & Kawai MAV-8

via this auction

This one was spotted and sent in via M Me.

Interesting rig. You'll find a picture of the back below with the TG33. This is the first post to feature the Hybrid Arts CPX computer module. Hybrid Arts also made the ADAP SOUNDTRACK SAMPLER ADAP-1. If anyone has any info on the CPX, feel to leave a comment. Curious if it's simply a computer with an editor for the TG77 and TG33, or it's own synth/sample playback module. Take a look at the back below. The Synthax RACKWare RG 124 appears to be the monitor for the system, and the Kawai MAV-8 is a midi patchbay.

It's interesting to see the TG77 and TG33 in a different enclosure.

Confusion Studios Announces Dedicated MIDI Controllers for the Yamaha Reface DX for iPad

"Two new, standalone iPad editions of the award-winning professional MIDI controller platform bring MIDI control to the Reface DX

New York, NY – February 14, 2017 – Confusion Studios announced two new MIDI controller apps for iPad, both of which will be available for download from the Apple App Store on Wednesday, March 1, 2017: MDDX1 and MDDX2.

Both of the new apps are MIDI controllers for the Yamaha Reface DX. Yamaha released the Reface DX – a portable, FM-synthesis-based keyboard – in 2015 to critical acclaim. Each of the new apps is based on a user-created layout for MIDI Designer Pro 2; each has a unique approach to controlling the Reface DX.

The Editor: MDDX1 by Helfried

MDDX1: Voice Editor for Reface DX by Helfried highlights this users-author’s eye for design, a deep attention to detail, and a desire to push the underlying platform – MIDI Designer Pro 2 – to do new things. It allows for control of every parameter on the Reface DX and provides surprising new control vistas. The App extends the reface DX’s interface, providing a much-needed algorithms display, Master Tune, Transpose, Randomize and other new sections.

MDDX1 will run on any iPad with iOS 9.3 or better, and will be available on March 1, 2017 for download for $9.99. The app purchase may be applied towards a bundle purchase including MIDI Designer Pro 2.

Performance Tool: MDDX2 by Ibo Kai

MDDX2: Performance Tool for Reface DX by Ibo Kai is an additional, performance- focused interface for the Reface DX. As the author of the layout puts it, 'This layout is pretty simple, just one page shows all the available functions. It is mainly what you find in the 'FM' keypad of the synth: frequencies, levels and feedback settings separately per operator plus the algorithm select.' In addition, Ibo Kai added an Amp Mode section. This auxiliary controller for the Reface DX is intended for live and studio performance, where a full-blown editor is not practical.

MDDX2 will run on any iPad with iOS 9.3 or better, and will be available on March 1, 2017 for download for $3.99. The app purchase may be applied towards a bundle purchase including MIDI Designer Pro 2.

Two New Standalone, Dedicated Apps

MIDI Designer Author and Confusion Studios CEO Dan Rosenstark notes, 'Both editors show the layout authors – Helfried and Ibo Kai – flexing design muscle and pushing the MIDI Designer platform to work in new ways. Each is a dedicated tool for working with the Reface DX and each provides a surprising and useful new interface for this small keyboard. Additionally, both provide new users with an entry point into the MIDI Designer platform at a low price.'

MDDX1 and MDDX2 join the four existing standalone MIDI Designer apps for dedicated control: MIDI Designer XW: Casio XW Solo Synth Controller, MD77: Voice Editor for Yamaha SY77/TG77 by Ibo Kai, MDClav: Clavinova Controller by Craig Knudsen and MDXG: XG Sound Set Controller by Craig Knudsen."
