Roland Juno-106 Synth Spa Arctic White Edition w/ Synth Spa Chips

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this listing, also on eBay

"This classic Juno 106 is in great cosmetic and operational condition. ALL voice / filter chips are working proper without any issues. Synth Spa professionally replaced / installed and calibrated this synth.

This synth was always taken care of. Battery Voltage was checked and in spec, power supply checked and in spec. It was also fully calibrated. It is ready for years and decades of use.. ready for any synth lover's rig. We are pricing it pretty low considering it has the complete voice chip upgrade. And as you can see from the pics.. it looks amazing as well.. very well kept! Only thing to note is a couple of buttons take a slightly harder press to engage than others. Did not bother me at all.. just stating for full disclosure : )"

Roland Juno-106 Synthesizer Troubleshooting/Repair Quiet Voice

video upload by gstormelectro

"Audio + Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2024

Today I'm investigating an issue with a Roland Juno-106. Voice #4 is a lot quieter than the others. And it's not a calibration issue. 99% certain it is NOT the brand new voice chips I put in as seen in a previous video. Troubleshooting will confirm that statement. So what else could it be? Maybe something EVERY 106 owner will want to be pro-active about mitigating?

This video is posted for general information about my experiences. Always observe safety working on electronics, and never tinker around inside power supplies without first unplugging the power cord. De-soldering components on the Juno-106 must be done VERY CAUTIOUSLY to avoid lifting very tiny delicate traces. If you're not sure about anything, there's no shame in taking your instrument to a qualified service technician.

Pics of the inside below.

"Due for original voice chip cleaning or replacement which is normal for these classics and also reflected in the price and condition of “fair.” Two of its voices are out: VCAs 2 and 4. Meaning the synth works in all ways but skips those voices when playing in poly mode. Unison mode sounds great, of course. But anyway you probably know the drill with these 106 voice chips. You can give the chips a bath in acetone and hope for the best or replace at ~$50 each. Replacement of all the chips at once seems to be the more convenient option, you usually get a discount for buying all six, and it is a permanent solution. I like doubleheart audio because they'll do the work for you and calibrate as well when you send them the motherboard. Estimated cost of chip replacement is $250 DIY to 300+ for full service."

Custom Red Roland Juno-106

via this auction

"Completely overhauled Roland Juno 106 in a custom red livery. Synth is as close to brand new as you can get. This is not your average restoration and has countless hours of excruciating detail put into it. The power supply was fully rebuilt with 5000 hour Nichicon caps, all electrolytic and ceramic caps replaced along with the voltage regulators and dual regulator controller. All 17 original ALPS sliders were completely disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, lubricated with quality silicone grease and reassembled. They have an incredibly smooth and firm feel. The panel board also features 34 new tactile switches, and 3 new alps 2 position slide switches. The 3 mini sliders on the bender board were also disassembled, cleaned, and lubricated.

Every board was stripped, thoroughly degreased, and washed. They have a glossy sheen appearance like they would from the factory. All 6 voice chips are original and have had the conformal coating stripped. Each voice chip was completely reflowed and installed on pin headers for easy removal or swapping. The synth was burn-in tested for 8 hour periods on several different days, absolutely no issues. CPU board has new battery installed. The entire keybed assembly has been completely stripped. Every single key was hand washed/degreased and polished. The keys are the whitest I have seen, this board appears to have very little use and was kept away from the sun. All rubber dome contacts despite working, were removed, and thoroughly cleaned. The carbon tracks on the keyboard assembly were also cleaned. This is a future proofing process which will insure several more decades of reliable note triggering.

A 3 prong standard IEC receptacle has been installed and a quality brand new power cable is included. All solder joints have been inspected and common control areas have been reflowed. All potentiometers have been cleaned. Full calibration performed, no crackle in the chorus! The synth is 100% functional and is in perfect cosmetic and electronic condition.

This is a unique collectors piece."

Roland HS-60 Demonstration

video upload by Vintage Synthesizer Solutions

"From our instructional video about how to replace the infamous voice chips on the Roland HS-60 and Juno 106. All sounds were made by the HS-60 and recorded without the use of effects, excluding the drums from the TT-606.

Watch the voice chip tutorial here :"

Roland Juno-106/HS-60 Voice Chip Replacement + Demo Track~

"Please join us while we show you how to replace the voice chips in a Juno-106/Juno-106S/HS-60. This video is quite long, but our goal when making this video was to create as comprehensive of a step by step guide as possible. Some important points are repeated multiple times intentionally, please ensure you heed all warnings if you plan to attempt this job. Alternatively, if you have any tips or best practices from your own experience, please don't hesitate to share them in the comments. We genuinely hope it is helpful for some of you. At the very least, it should give you a very good idea if this is something you'd even want to consider attempting yourself ;). The background music & demo track using this synth @ the end are also all original content!"

"The HS-60 is a Juno 106 with the addition of internal speakers and an audio input jack that allows players to send an external audio signal through the internal speakers.

This unit is in "closet classic" condition, extremely clean and fully functional. It doesn't appear to have ever been gigged. The only cosmetic blemishes are a small scratch on the lower back panel (pictured) and a very small scratch on the top next to the left music stand holder.

All 6 voices sound great and the chorus is crystal clear. Internal speakers sound surprisingly good, and the sliders all move without noise. All 6 voice chips are original, and voice chip #2 has been serviced (acetone treatment)..."

Akai AX-80

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The AX-80 was their top end 8-voice analog keyboard, and it has a very similar architecture to more common 80s polys like the Juno 106, Chroma Polaris, Prophet etc, and so on. Two oscillators per voice, plus sub, all put through a classic Curtis CEM filter which gives it a bit of an Oberheim flavor -- the filter is, to my ears, most comparable to a Matrix 12 type sound (which is natural, as it uses the same Filter/VCA chip).

As to the condition, I've restored the power section and replaced the membrane buttons (which often go bad over the first 20-30 years of life) and the sound is absolutely gorgeous. Low noise floor, bright and punchy, warm and lush. The playability of this is a 9/10, or maybe a 10/10 depending on how generous you are. However, it seems that the screens were not completely salvageable so be notified that I am decreasing the price to just 650 as replacement screens are not easy to find. (If you do find some later on, feel welcome to bring it back to me and I'll install them for you).

However, the synth is perfectly well playable without the screens, and editing parameters is virtually unaffected by their absence. (The screens are really just there to look cool, in my opinion)."

Calibrating a Roland Juno-106 or HS-60 Synthesizer

Instructions on how to calibrate a Roland Juno-106 or HS-60 have been posted on the Syntaur site here.

"This procedure will walk you through the process of calibrating (tuning) a Roland Juno-106 (or HS-60) synthesizer. It requires a voltmeter, a frequency counter or tuner, and an oscilloscope. It also requires working on the keyboard with the power on and the power supply exposed, so this calibration should not be attempted unless you are confident in your abilities to work safely, and to use the necessary equipment.
Note that any time you replace a voice chip on your synthesizer, you will need to recalibrate at least that voice.

Make sure the keyboard has been powered on for at least 10 minutes to warm up prior to any calibrations, and perform the calibration steps in the order they are listed here."

Black Roland Juno 106 - Junior 106

"Just got this back from Synth Spa a few weeks ago. Mint condition and looks great in white on black.

Totally refurbished inside and out. All voice chip refurbished, re caped, clean pots and sliders even the chorus is quiet!!! I’ve had a few 106s in the past and this sounds better than any of them.

This was my old HS-60 chopped to 37 keys. The keys are nice and white and play as new!

There are only a dozen or so of these Juniors floating around, this is the newest and arguably the best 106 you can find, either as a 37 or full 61.

Has the Synth Spa 7 years warranty good thru 2025."

Rosen Sound Synth Demos & Restorations

Published on Jul 28, 2018 Rosen Sound

This one in via Soviet Space Child.

www.rosensound.com/rentals

Playlist:
1. Oberheim OB-X - Rosen Sound Demo
The OBX was the first major "answer" to the Prophet 5 synthesizer, and at least in our opinion, was the best answer anyone could've given.

The OB-X is based on the basic design of the (S)ynthesizer (E)xpander (M)odule also from Oberheim. Like the SEM, it features two discreet VCO's with saw and pulse, two envelopes, and the low pass section of the SEM filter. It also added noise, a release control, and cross modulation (similar to the Prophet's cross mod). The prophet's cross mod was a bit more dynamic, though. A flexible LFO section is also featured.

None the less, the OBX is in a species all of it's own in many ways. It's one of the very few mostly discreet programmable polyphonic synthesizers, and more than that spec, it sounds unique and absolutely marvelous.

Our unit features encore midi

Book your rental package with Rosen Sound and see the rest of our synth catalog at www.rosensound.com/rentals
2. Moog Minimoog - Rosen Sound Demo

3.SCI Prophet 5 - Rosen Sound Demo
In a lot of ways this needs no introduction. One of the most iconic poly synths ever made, and the first synth to offer true programmability with polyphonic architecture.

The Prophet 5 offers your basic amenities in a poly synth with 5 voices each with 2 VCO's, a low pass VCF, a VCA, two EG's, one LFO with multiple wave shapes available, with POLY MOD as the icing on the cake. This lets you make FM type sounds and is part of what makes the prophet 5 unique.

Our unit features factory midi
4. Oberheim Four Voice - Rosen Sound Demo
This in our opinion is one of the finest synthesizers ever made in terms of overall sound. The features are of course many and the synth as a whole is very flexible and powerful, but the sound it outputs is nothing short of mesmerizing.

The FVS features 4 Synthesizer Expander Modules (SEM) each representing a polyphonic voice. This means for one patch, each SEM must be setup identically. This may seem like too much, but it's actually a very enjoyable process that causes you to think different about the patch your making, the polarity of your modulation per voice, and subtle differences you can set.

The synth can also be used in a powerful unison mode, allowing each SEM to be adjusted separately for a crazy 4x dual oscillator synthesizer each with a multi mode filter to be fired at once.

Each SEM is as or more powerful than your standard mono synth, featuring 2 oscillators with saw and pulse each, PWM, FM, 1 LFO, two EG's, a bi-polar filter modulation control, and the sweetest Oberheim filter ever made featuring a bandpass filter and a sweepable LP-HP filter. These filters are special in the way that when the resonance is turned up, there is no loss of volume or low end.

Additionally, our FVS is an early model with no programmer (a feature loathed by many anyway). Instead, it features 2 dual mini sequencers with a common clock available. This means you can do 8-step 4 note poly sequencing between the four SEM's, or split the keyboard with one sequencer playing 1 SEM and 3 note chords on the other side of the keyboard.

Functionally, our FVS is very much in tune and has been stabilized to survive travel and tuning consistency. It is in tune as soon as it's turned on, and we provide a quick start guide for our rental customers to learn how to easily program and tune the machine.

Our FVS also features MIDI in via a modified YARN's module installed inside. This allows through basic midi and if desired (more complicated) midi scripts to play it polyphonically (default on boot), sequence each SEM assigned to a separate channel (enabling MPE), or played in Unison. All of these features can be harnessed by utilizing SYSEX or the Yarns editor, all which is provided on a thumb drive for rentals.
5. Moog Memorymoog - Rosen Sound Demo
To start, let's forget the internet-lore or an "unreliable" and "impossible to tune" machine. Our service shop is known worldwide for our work on Memorymoogs and stabilizing them for real production use.

Now, let's introduce you to (what we consider) the pinnacle of Moog synthesizers. With 3 oscillators + ladder filter per voice, flexible and intuitive modulation, and a knob per function, the Memorymoog is not a force to be reckoned with, and is in what we consider to be the top 3 best sounding synthesizers ever made.

From lush pads, 18 oscillator unison leads, heavy bass, and even gentle timbres, the memorymoog is sure to be a staple piece for your session in any genre on music. Plus it has everyones favorite feature: an arpeggiator!

Our rental memorymoog will arrive with an expression pedal and 12 custom patches (87-99) made by our resident in house programmer, Eli Goss. These 12 patches are the juice that will fuel modern productions to achieve sounds unobtainable by any other synth, with plugins not even worth a mention.
6. Oberheim OB8 - Rosen Sound Demo
One of our staple synths in the collection. The lore of the OB8 is that it's a less-exciting OBXa, however, with some choice mod's which we've done to ours, they are sonically identical.

The OB8 is one of the most flexible synthesizers available, which includes deep LFO routing from the front panel, and a PAGE 2 function that transforms every knob and button on the synth to do even deeper modulation, including quantized LFO's, musical "OBXA" style detuning, envelope routing, and more.

Additionally, our OB8 has been fitted with a Pratt & Read keybed, which brings the true feel of American poly synths to the experience, while also having the amenities provided by the B5 EPROM including factory midi.
7. Sequential Circuits Prophet 10 - Rosen Sound Demo
The Prophet 10 is more than just 2 Prophet 5's in one box; featuring an active EQ per voice, deeper modulation, and more performance capabilities with it's dual manuals and CV pedal inputs. This prophet 10 also features midi in and out.
8. Oberheim Four Voice Sequence
You could do an entire score with this #oberheimfourvoice. With quad poly sequencing and split modes the sky is the limit. Available for rent through us! Contact us for rates and availability. And yes, it has midi!
9. Prophet 5 Rev 3 Restoration

10. Juno 106 Multiboard removal

11. Juno 106 80017A Chip Failure - What To Check
In this video I go over a couple things to check not only to see if your 80017A chips are failing, but also other potential failures of the juno, including failure of one of the MC5534A dual DCO chip.

This video also applies to other models, such as the MKS 30, HS 60, GR 700 and some others.

Analogue Renaissance at SUPERBOOTH - Analog distortion for the TB-303 and pretty much everything else

"TS-303 GT Acid Screamer prototype

Totaly bonkers circuit design with Vbe multipliers, Gyrator, Capacitance multiplier and Negative Impedance Converter in a feedback loop with ridiculously high gain.
Features:

- Jumper selectable input impedance 50k - 500k Ohm
- Variable input level: From nothing to +40dB
- Variable output level: 0 to 8Vp-p.
- Tuneable Symetry of the distortion. From perfect symmetric distortion to keeping bottom or top half of the signal intact while obliterating the other.
- Tuneable Dynamics: It analyses the volume enveloppe of the input signal and can restores this on the output signal. This from zero to doubling of the original dynamics.
- Switchable between overdrive and distortion
- Frequency selective distortion: Only distort certain parts of the spectrum, while keeping the rest itact. 2 frequency selection knobs allowing highpass, bandpass, band-reject, lowpass distortion. Do not confuse this with filtering of the input or output signal. It happens in the distortion engine itself.
- Turbo mode: Self-oscillation happening only at the highest clipping levels. Still exploring the posiblities of this one, but it already made me mistake a 606 for a 303...
- A rack version will also be available

AR3109

Replacement for the IR3109. Sounds and behaves exactly the same.

It even does the distortion that happens in the MC-202 and SH-202 when you run them at low voltage or almost empty batteries.

It's also DC-accurate. So, it also works in the portamento circuit of early Jupiter 4's.
2x1cm 6-layer pcb with plate capacitors to fit everything in the DIL-sized footprint of the original chip

"This is an exceptionally good looking Juno. All of the artwork is there and looks great. No scratchy pots for they have been cleaned. All of the black coating was removed from all voice chips and they have new gold plated pins. I have also added high quality sockets so if a voice chip were to EVER go out, all you would have to do is pull it out and put a new one in. No soldering irons needed. New blue LED's, because they look awesome. The numeric display, the "A" preset LED and one of the chorus' were kept red. I think it looks cooler with a mix of both colors. The original battery has been replaced with a new one and a socket so if the battery ever goes out, just pull the battery and pop a new one in. The old power socket has been replaced with a standard 3-prong IEC Socket so you can use standard power cables instead of the 2-prong chord."

"Operationally: one of the six voices is acting up (very, very common with these units). I traced it as the #1 voice. The unit works perfectly for the first 15-20 minutes, then the bad voice starts crackling. Other than this bad voice chip, everything else on the synth works great, all the sliders, keys, outputs etc."

Replacement chips are available online, but you do need to unsolder the original and solder the new ones in either directly or via a socket for easier replacement later.

Roland MKS80 & MPG80 Super Jupiter Tweaking

Published on Jul 3, 2017 Meta Function

"In this video, Meta Function demonstrate various synthesis techniques with a Roland MKS80 & MPG80 Super Jupiter.

Released in 1984 (the same year as the Juno 106), the MKS80 is an eight-voice rack polysynth with two voltage controlled oscillators per voice and MIDI functionality. Sharing a portion of its name with Roland's legendary Jupiter 8, the MKS80 architecture is actually more similar to the Jupiter 6. There are two incarnations of the MKS80 - one using the CEM3340 VCO integrated circuit architecture of the Jupiter 6 (known as Rev 4) the other with proprietary Roland voicing chips (known as Rev 5). Some people believe the Rev 4 sounds a bit darker and a little deeper in the low end. The one used in this video is a Rev 4 model. The MPG80 is a dedicated programmer module for the MKS80, which provides one knob per function - greatly opening up the synth's programmability. The MPG80 transmits any tweaks as SysEx data, allowing for the recording of parameter changes over MIDI to a DAW.

The MKS80 not only found a home with many 80s artists such as The Pet Shop Boys, OMD and Madonna (i.e. the bass line on 'Into The Groove'), but it also became popular with electronic musicians such as The Aphex Twin and Hardfloor. It's very easy to create fat, rich, warm intense sounds – almost with an analogue hoover like quality - similar to the ones used by Joey Beltram on his early pioneering work on the legendary R&S records in the early 90s. This beast can really rumble and squeak like a little piggy when the resonance is up high.

In this video the patch starts with Osc 1 set to a saw waveshape. The Osc Mix is flipped to Osc 2, which is set to a Pulse waveshape. PWM is applied to Osc 2 by the LFO and then by Env 1. The Osc mix is balanced between the two oscillators and Osc 1 is dropped by an octave with Osc 2 detuned slightly. The cutoff frequency is tweaked on the lowpass 24dB VCF filter (the same chip as the JP8) and various filter modulations are performed. The unit is placed in union mode and unison detuning and Glide are added. Finally the resonance is pushed (causing low frequency drop off ala MiniMoog) and the high pass filter (similar to the one on the Jupiter 6) has it’s cutoff frequency tweaked.

Audio recorded via Calrec S2 console and SSL convertors. All dry, no FX, EQ or compression. The only post production performed was normalization.

Sequenced via a Sequentix Cirklon.

Watch at 1080p with good quality audio monitoring for the best experience.

Meta Function developed the Max For Live synthesizer, the Wave Junction in partnership with Sonicstate.com. A four voice paraphonic synth with 2 multi-mode osc, three multi-mode filters, 5 LFOs, 5 Envs and a 12 slot modulation matrix.

You can buy it from Sonicstate right here for £19.95:

"Its in FANTASTIC condition, no rust just a couple of paint chips on the back corner. All of the artwork is there and looks great. No scratchy pots for they have been cleaned. All of the black coating was removed from all voice chips, and the old pins were replaced with super high quality gold plated pins, and there are super high quality sockets. The listing also includes the original box! The fact that this still exist is crazy to me. It is in pretty rough shape with ware on the corners and some rips but all the artwork is there and there is even a sticker with matching serial number on the sides. The previous owner bought it brand new in the 80's and kept the box around. One of the inside flaps read "christmas tree" so I guess it used to store a tree, lol. Regardless its cool."
