Playing the Cursus Iteritas with MPE

junklight

"The Cursus Iteritas is my kind of oscillator and as soon as I heard a demo I knew I needed one. More often than not though it ends up making percussive sounds. For todays video though I hooked it up to the seaboard via the FH-1 and let it do its thing. The output is routed via the Viol Runia for some extra grit & flavour

Accompaniment is a Christian Henson piano sample and MLR, Morphagene and W/ are adding to the action too. Reverb as ever is Valhalla DSP.

Talking of Christian Henson his recent video is very interesting on the topic of synthetic/natural sounds [below] and goes a long way to explain why I love adding layers of distortion to everything :-)"

Why Are Synths So Difficult To Mix???

"Do you find synths difficult to mix? If so what methods do you employ, a bit of distortion, a spring, a plate?"

step seq for the launchpad in Usine 001 - 004

YouTube via ethnix73 | October 08, 2010 | 0 likes, 0 dislikes

001:
"This is a little preview of a patch made for the launchpad in Usine http://www.sensomusic.com/usine/

As you can see and ear, there is stil a few minor bugs. Next step is to resolve this small bugs ( a minor work) and implement further pages to allow sequence of 16, 24 and 32 steps; and a few cosmetics changes (pad color for the exemple).

Suggestions and ideas are welcome on the Usine forum.

The base of this patch is to translate midi to the matrix module in Usine. Finding a light on cpu way to do this, this patch will be followed by others dedicated to the launchpad in Usine...a drum sequencer, an mlr like patch, etc."

002: October 27, 2010
"Here is another little preview of a patch made for the launchpad in Usine http://www.sensomusic.com/usine/

I've added the possibility to make sequences of 8, 16, 24 and 32 steps.
You're also able to copy/paste between pages.
As you can see, i've added color to the matrix pads..."

"EDIT: i've just noticed the cpu usage in this video...It's not related to this patch (1% with a core2duo), but the video recording...

In this video, you will see a few functions implemented in this patch:

-Preview and hold mode
-Number of steps
-Number of pages
-Autochord
-Polyphonic playback
-Different playback speed
-Random octave mode"

Monome 40h

Title link takes you to shots via this auction.

Details:
"One of the few 40h models, own this beautiful machine. One of only 400
From http://monome.org/40h/:

the monome 40h is a reconfigurable grid of sixty-four backlit buttons.

buttons can be configured as toggles, radio groupings, sliders, or organized into more sophisticated systems to monitor and trigger sample playback positions, stream 1-bit video, interact with dynamic physical models, and play games. button press and visual indication are decoupled by design: the correlation is established by each application.

There's a growing collection of applications written specifically for the 40h.

Provided on the monome website as well are examples for writing your own applications. the 40h uses usb and talks serial, midi, and open sound control. it plays well with max/msp, pd, processing, reaktor, flash, java, ruby, and many others. all 40h software and firmware is open source. monome aims to facilitate a community of shared exploration

There are also numerous applications and patches which exemplify the 40h as a simultaneous input and output device. several are musically-inclined, though the interface also fits wonderfully into alternative uses. all monome applications are open-source and no additional purchase is necessary to use them. here are a few examples :

* 64step is a versatile step sequencer aimed at fluid composition and editing.
* mlr is a sample-cutting platform intended for dynamic and performative live manipulation.
* life is an interactive version of conway’s original simulation.
* phoenix is a probabilistic arpeggiator with a drawable waveform

design

applied, aesthetic minimalism. the 40h features binary on/off buttons and binary on/off light indication with global brightness control. we believe these parameters most aptly fit both the physical action and size of the buttons. simplicity, constraints, and adaptability promote intuitive interaction.
open source = modification encouraged

all related software is open source. this includes the embedded code, routers (serialio and mapd), and applications. the community is invited to engage in exploring this interface and share findings. also encouraged are hardware modifications, included are available ports in the circuitry for the addition of analog knobs, optical encoders, or anything you could program to interact.
specifications
model 40h
elements 8 by 8 (64 total)
dimensions 6.75 by 6.75 by 1.125
materials 6061 anodized aluminum, translucent silicone, conductive silicone, high durometer silicone, lead-free components and circuit boards
interface usb 2.0
power bus powered
platforms os x, windows xp, linux

the unit contains no logos, text, or markings.

the hardware contains an atmel avr atmega32 microcontroller, interfaced with an ftdi ft245r usb fifo and maxim 7221 led matrix driver. the avr is programmable via jtag (port included on circuit) with gcc and avr-lib."

disquiet0441 - river stones - MLR with microphones and IPad synth

junklight

"Disquiet Junto Project 0441: Three Stones

This weeks Disquiet Junto is

Step 1: Find three stones from one location.
Step 2: Consider how the stones can be thought to connect (physically, historically, culturally, psychologically) with where they originated, with a sense of region, of place, of terroir.

Now 1 is kind of easy I live at the edge of the English Lake District. Mountains and Sea. I picked up Three River stones on Saturday on our wanderings and was thinking about 2. People tend to think about the Lake District as a natural landscape but of course nothing could be further from the truth. First of all when Stone Age and then Iron Age man arrived here it was covered in trees. Those people set to work in the landscape right away - not just clearing but also working the stone. High in the Langdale valley is a place where green stone axes were made. They seem to have been ceremonial and have been found all over Europe. In Queen Elizabeth the first’s time Copper and Silver were mined here. Slate has been an export for a long time too. As we head towards the coast the abundance of Iron Ore helped the burgeoning ship building trade blossom.

So Industrial Beauty…..

A video and a recording"
