Matt Traum - "James"

Published on Feb 2, 2013 PatchmanMusic·9 videos

"Matt Traum improvisation on Pat Metheny's classic "James".

I am playing the Steinerphone EWI on this. I thought I would play a little improvised version of Metheny's "James" harmonized ala Michael Brecker. This is a one-pass recording with no overdubs. The harmonizer is an Eventide Eclipse with a custom patch designed by myself being controlled in real time via foot switches.

I am playing what I call a "Hyper-EVI Steinerphone". It's the exact same model Steinerphone EWI Michael Brecker played for many years in the mid to late 1980s with Steps Ahead and on various studio sessions. This model was the first EWI that Brecker played and he took the instrument to amazing heights. This horn was hand made by the great wind controller inventor Nyle Steiner. It is an EWI (woodwind type controller)- but I have modified it internally so it fingers like an EVI (brass type controller). The horn plays incredibly well- it's the Stradivarius of wind controllers. It is hooked up to a companion synth system also designed by Steiner. In this system are two Crumar EVI synth modules and a Steiner "wood and glue" formant filter unit (which is not used in this video). Only one Crumar module is heard in this video fed into the Eventide Eclipse processor.

A little trivia on this system you see in this video: This is the actual synth unit that Doug Norwine played on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson with Melissa Manchester when she performed "La Vie En Rose" (you should be able to watch it on youtube).

Super Duduk Demo - Mark Steiner on NuEVI

Published on Jan 6, 2020 Mark Steiner

"Suonopuro Super Duduk sample instrument for Kontakt. Made for electronic wind instruments.

Purchase at SuonoPuro.net.

Incredibly well, multi-sampled duduk instrument. The best I have played, and I adore the duduk. Thank you, Gino for creating this!

Also, for info and waitlist on the physical midi controller/wind instrument that plays in this video, email TheNuEVI@gmail.com. It is the creation of Johan Berglund, based on Nyle Steiner's EVI.

There is also a woodwind fingered version of that instrument called the NuRAD, which is patterned by Nyle Steiner after the standard EWI he invented (the one in the video is based on trumpet fingering)."

Vactrol Storm - Demo of Nyle Steiner's 24 Stage String Filter

Published on Mar 16, 2013 Mark Steiner·4 videos

"I learned recently of a sweepable 24 stage vactrol filter Nyle Steiner designed. He said he built about 12.

He found the one he has and plugged it in for the first time 15 years and we had a listen. It's just beautiful.

I told him I could find no information on line or even photos etc. of it and he let me borrow it to do a demo recording. This video is my demo of the device.

It was made to make violin/string sounds using it as a static filter with 24 band pass stages, but also can do some amazing effects with the stages being swept using 24 separate vactrols.

It's a pretty long, overproduced demo but I really wanted to capture a lot of aspects of this amazing filter. I played an A6 Andromeda, Steiner EVI, white noise, and also played a bovine acoustic simulation device into it (by popular request)."

NuEVI Feels Like - by Nyle Steiner and Mark Steiner

Published on Aug 5, 2018 Mark Steiner

"How does it feel to play the NuEVI?

For wait list and info, email: TheNuEVI@gmail.com.

NuEVI created by Johan Berglund of Berglund Instruments in Sweden.
EVI invented by Nyle Steiner.
Save the EVI movement successfully realized and driven by Steve Anderson.

Jason, my 12 year old son asked why we were doing such a strange thing in this video. I told him it was just a stunt. He said, quite seriously, "that's really not a stunt, Dad, that's just screwing around."

A little bit distorted by youtube compression, but not as badly as often can be for an isolated saw wave sound. Doing this video I did tests and learned that their compression doesn't distort a pulse width modulated square wave. And that both are far less distorted if you pan them at about 6% (or more but I did 6%) away from center. So happy find. Thank you for listening!

Setup: NuEVI midi to CV.OCD converter to Doepfer Slew on breath, controlling a Manhatten Analog - Nyle Steiner Synthesystem Filter, which is filtering a Pittsburgh Modular VCO, which goes through Valhalla Hall reverb. A journey of human to digital to analog through digital... all used to strengthen each other."

Nyle Steiner - Interview 2010 / Bach Toccata

YouTube via northblip | May 30, 2010

"Nyle Steiner is the inventor of the Electronic Valve Instrument (EVI) and the Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI). As well as being an amazing musician, he is one of the kindest most humble people I've ever met. This is a clip from the Park City TV "Mountain Morning Show" with host, Jen Hardman. This was done live at 7am, May 12th, 2010.
For more information on Nyle, please visit his home page.

via spunkytoofers in the comments of this post.

"notice the custom sequencer/chord voicers built directly into the controller. this is a one-of-a-kind slickness for wind controller players. i had read articles about nyle talking about these kind of problems with chord voicing, etc in the past and to see him still at it and ironing it all out is inspirational.."

Nyle Steiner_Michael Brecker_ Joel C. Peskin EWI Video

YouTube via ireedman. Note the YouTube video has Nyler instead of Nyle in the title.
"Performance video of EWI Prototype in 1987. Sweet 4 CP, composed by Joel C. Peskin, produced by Joel C. Peskin & Andy Muson. Nyle Steiner performs on EVI, Joel Peskin & Michael Brecker perform on EWI. Michael Brecker is also heard playing tenor sax in the opening sequence."

This is an obvious follow-up to the prior post directly below. I found it on Nyle Steiner's http://www.sparkbangbuzz.com. Do check the site out for more.

"Stretch" with Judd Miller at Le Cafe 1986

Published on Feb 22, 2014 PatchmanMusic·17 videos

"Here is a wonderful performance from master studio synthesist and pioneering EVI wind controller player Judd Miller with the group "Stretch" recorded live in 1986 at Le Cafe in California. Wind controller players will appreciate the fact that Judd's Crumar EVI is pre-Midi!! It uses analog control voltage (CV) to control the attached Crumar EVI synth as well as the external Oberheim Xpander. A special guest in the audience is none other than EVI / EWI inventor Nyle Steiner! He is seen at 01:03:20 in the video.

Personnel:
Judd Miller - Crumar EVI / Oberheim Xpander
Art Rodriguez - Drums
Tom Kellock - Keyboards
Cliff Hugo - Bass

We hope you enjoy this rare glimpse into the early days of wind synthesis. If you want to read more about Judd Miller's amazing career in the studios and working on big budget movie soundtracks, visit:

Squeeze Ribbon Synthesizer - Modification of an Eowave Ribbon

Squeeze Ribbon Synthesizer - My modification of an Eowave Ribbon.

Published on Sep 30, 2012 Mark Steiner·4 videos

"Squeeze Ribbon. I added a squeeze nuance inducer to this Eowave Ribbon. More consistency of dynamics across a phrase of notes than the pressure sensor on the ribbon controller. This would be a great way to phrase an Ondes Martenot. This frees up the left hand for sound changes, another instrument, chords, hitchhiking etc.

A small pressure sensor should do the same thing, used this way, perhaps thumb against ring, or index finger or (as Dana Countryman suggested to me) thumb against the third finger. First test of this, could be refined but good proof of concept.

Special thanks to Nyle Steiner for adding CV routing into a Steiner EVI sound module to allow this and some other modifications I'm working on.

Have a look at 'ThePinesofMars.blogspot.com'."

Crumar / Steiner Parker EVI Electronic Valve Instrument Synthesizer

"Jazz licks never sounded better than humming through this bad boy, the Crumar EVI, originally designed by Nyle Steiner of Steiner Parker fame and rebranded by Crumar. The EVI is a monophonic analog synthesizer controlled by breath, and styled after a trumpet.

Sun Ra Arkestra vet Marshall Allen famously rocks one if you've had the great pleasure to see him perform.

Apart from rusty, busted latches, this unit is sublime, with all functions working properly. It sounds huge, especially on the lower end of the dial where crazy low frequency bass tones really move some air.

Features:
2 oscillators, 3 waveshapes ( Sawtooth, Square, Rectangular ) selectable and doubled.
Volume,Breath Level, Resonance, S.E.D. ( Spectral Energy Distribution ),Tune controls
4 Switches for Wave select and Touch Modulation(ON/OFF), and Signal Output.
Breath Controller has four playing keys and unique octave shift roller (8 octave)
and 3 knob( Tune,Scale,Portamento), 3 adjustment (TM sens,Breath zero, sens)"

Deck The Halls - Mark Steiner - EVI - 2000

Published on Nov 21, 2013 Mark Steiner·16 videos

"EVI/wind synth, lots of ASR-10 and some great white noise from a Doepfer MS404. This is one of the few versions of the tune with a pug growling in it. Oh yeah, and the organ-ish part is a Sequential Circuits 6-Track synth through a phaser created within a Nord Micro Modular. Harpsichord virtuoso, Ian Franks did not appear on this recording, courtesy of Gypsum Asylum Records."

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a Crumar EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument) designed by Nyle Steiner, made in Italy around 1980. These were made for brass players who wanted to double on synthesizer. I inherited this instrument from its original owner and it has sat unused for some time. The unit itself is in very good condition with minor paint chipping. The case exhibits signs of age. The serial number was actually handwritten with Magic Marker #110.

I've tested it to the best of my ability and everything seems to function correctly.

Vintage Steiner Parker Synthacon

via this auction

"The year, 1971, 16 years old from Japan, on a trip to NYC.Walk into Manny's Music in Manhattan. Excited that I'm getting my first "real" guitar, a new Gibson Les Paul Deluxe ( still have it!! finish is cracking nicely!!). Strange keyboard with a ton of switches catches my eye. Way cooler than the Mini-Moog I had seen before. My Dad, being cool that he is, urges me to check it out. Makes all kinds of weird noises. Gotta have it!!! Wow everybody back home, groove to Walter Carlos, pre Wendy, Morton Subotnick, etc. Awesome tones and crashes when I intertwine the oscillators, envelope generators, VC filters. Many a stoned headphone journeys taken. 2010, Synth hasn't seen the light of day in 30 years, packed away the whole time. Plug it in, move around the oscillators, and BAM, wacka-wacka memories!!!!!! I have no use for it now.But I know that it'll make someone's fantasy come true!!! The workout.... Every switch works, every knob works, every key works in tune ( all keys are uniformly stiff. they will need to be re-conditioned.. felt?) As you can see, no dings, a little dusty. This machine has never been played outside. Never been onstage like my Paul. Just in great condition for its age. Let me know how you would like it wrapped for shipment. Merry Christmas!!!!"

Update via Micke in the comments: "The Synthacon first appeared in 1975 so there's no way the seller could've bought it back in 1971. It's obviosly a typo.

Much more interesting than DM's use of this synthesizer is, in my opinion, its use on the Apocalypse Now soundtrack (1979). The Steiner EVI, synthasystem modular and double-synthacon are all over the score."

Synthesizer von Gestern (Synths of the Past) Volume 2

via this auction

"This is a brand new sealed, unopened copy of the rare classic synthesiser book, 'Synthesizer von Gestern' by Matthias Becker. It is the second volume, which (at 146 pages) is larger than the first, and includes an incredible array of classic synths. Unlike the A-Z or Museum book, this is a beautifully-bound hardback, and is printed on very good quality paper. It is the first and only edition of this rare book. The picture is of another book, but it is identical.

When this book was out of print and no longer available, copies were changing hands for 100GBP-plus. Then the publishers found one last pallet of books in their warehouse, gave them to the author in lieu of royalties, and I drove to Koeln in Germany to bring back all I could.

It is in German, but so much of the book is taken up with beautiful full-colour photos and excellent illustrations that that isn't as important as you might think, if you don't speak German. It's a great coffee-table book, but full of serious information too - and the photos are in a class of their own. Crisp, beautiful, detailed, professional!

The book starts with an in-depth interview with Oskar Sala, inventor of the Mixtur-Trautonium (used for the entire soundtrack of Hitchcock's 'The Birds'). Fantastic photos of his studio and various Trautoniums.
Other synths and electronic instruments covered in detail include:-
