"A demonstration of some of the sound capabilities of the Star Instruments Synare S3X drum module, analog synthesizer. Issued from 1977 to 1982. This unit has five presets, which are moderately adjustable. I assume this was to make it more practical for live performance use. The “0” setting allows full adjustability for making one’s own sounds, although the range is less expansive than the standard Synare 3, which had the drawback of having no presets. The S3X has two AC power inputs to supply 18 volts. However it does work with one twelve volt input (positive tip plug). I'm selling this particular unit on Ebay (January 2016)."

This unit has five presets, which are moderately adjustable. I assume this was to make it more practical for live performance use. via the seller: "Just out of 20+ years of clean/dry storage- Clean, Original, Vintage Analog, Super Rare -Star Instruments Inc, Synare Percussion Synthesizer PS-1- stamped serial # 0160, made in Stafford Springs, CT! Also included is the original 50 page user manual. I got this awesome synth in a band gear trade from the original owner in the mid 1980s, used it low hours in the studio- and stored it since. This unit powers up, makes notes/noises-has both working red indicator lights, the original rubber sensor pads dried and deteriorated with age- all rubber pads and glue carefully removed- the sensor pads are in great condition with no dents/scratches/resin staining. Each of the 4 pads have 3 sensor sections, and all work fine- fingertips only-sticks were never used. All switches/sliders are working and changing pitches and waves like they should-they all are dusty and crackle and the main volume slider has loose contact-works, but is touchy. Only missing the white noise knob. I've never opened this unit up myself- will need contacts cleaned for sure. Has hi and lo and headphone outputs- the hi output seems hotter/louder, the lo is weaker/softer."

Thanks to David at Super Synthesis for working with me to create this one of a kind version of the Super 37 keyboard controller. It is celebrating its one year anniversary since its creation and delivery to my studio.

The S37 is also triggering the Synare SY-3 clone which is passing through the Knas Ekdahl moisturizer. Korg ES-1 small rhythm backing.

Really enjoy the modules I have compiled into the S37 and have only one change before I call it final and that is to change the Blue Lantern joystick out for an Intellijel micro vca.

"Here is a quick sample of my Synare 3 up for sale.It is a collection of snapshot samples put together into a sequence using Cubase. Some sounds are panned left and right, there is a pinch of reverb on the snares and there is a little eq. Besides that it is 100% pure Synare.
Update: This synare sold for a healthy $1150 usd on ebay. I have uploaded a heap of sounds onto Freesound.org if you want some wave samples. Just type "synare 3" into the search engine. Enjoy!"

"Here's a video of a DIY Synare 3 Analog Drum synth built from the kit available at:

This is a pretty easy kit to build, and comes with all of the necessary parts except for an enclosure. I used an old desktop calculator, and added a wood panel for the controls. This has a wide sonic range, and is quite useful when being triggered by another machine, in my instance a Yamaha RX-11."

Here we are using WerkBench to make a groove using sounds from a late-1970's analog drum synth known as the Synare 3.

The Star Instruments Synare is most famous for its use on disco records as a simple 'tom-tom' sound (the first sound I play in this video). Despite its cheesy historical use, the Synare actually a beastly little analog synth with two oscillators (with noise and LFO modes respectively), a self oscilating low-pass filter, and envelopes for filter and volume. I only scratch the surface in this video.

WerkBench is a tool for crafting rhythmic loops from any source material in real-time. WerkBench is great for grabbing sounds on the fly from analog synths that lack patch memory (like the Synare, Monotron, or any modular rig).

"Up for auction is a fully working Synare SX3 Analog Drum Synth. It sounds huge & spacey. and is super clean. It has wear associated with being 30+ years old - the drum pad and 3 main screws have been replaced, the volume knob is inoperable (but set at the loudest setting), and a ludwig drum mount probably replaced the original. It's certainly not mint, but very playable as witnessed by the video"

Synare Sensor Finger Drum Synthesizer

"Up for bid here is a Synare Sensor drum trigger/synthesizer made in 1979 or thereabouts by the late, great Star Instruments Co. out of Stafford Springs, CT. It's a smaller version of the legendary Synare drum synthesizers that was designed to be screwed down onto the rim of a drum. Now it's more often used as a finger-controlled portable analog synthesizer. This thing has a ton of sonic possibilities in a very few ounces of box. And this particular box is in impeccable, sparkly, like-new condition, looks and plays great!

Physically, the front has knob controls for Tune, LFO Frequency, LFO Modulation, Decay, Oscillator Sweep, and Volume. There's also an internal trim pot you can turn to adjust the sensitivity of the unit, accessible either by opening up the case or by inserting a thin non-conductive screwdriver in the little hole between the MOD. and SWEEP knobs. On the back is a 1/4" output jack, a 1/4" footswitch in for silencing the output, and a 1/4" footswitch out for chaining the footswitch to multiple pedals. There's an easily-removable bracket on the bottom for screwing the Sensor down on the rim of your drum. Dimensions are 3" by 4" by 6.25", including the knobs and the attachment bracket, weighs about 11 ounces with the battery installed. Speaking of which, the unit runs on one 9-volt battery, included in this auction.
